It's a Lakland - you can tell by the shape of the bridge. (That guy has got to be the dweebiest, uncoolest looking bass player I've ever seen. The song was sh*te as well).
As for Mr. Adamson...totally agree - I think he's one of those players under the radar. I've not seen the reformed Magazine - too young first time round, but been listening since about '93. His basslines got me hooked! On an aside, anyone know what bass he used on record? I've seen pictures with a Ric 4001S with modified pups, but I really don't know what he used on LP. I was actually jamming with 'The Correct Use Of Soap' yesterday - what a record!
Go & see them if you get a chance - absolutely fantastic. I never saw them the first time around either - I got into them just after they split up. He used to use what I thought was a Rickenbacker 4001 with a Gibson EBO type pickup in the neck position, but apparently it was a copy (probably an Ibanez). He was one of the few players to regularly use an Ovation Magnum (Awesome basses!). The Ovations could sound quite Ricky-ish so it's difficult to know what he's using in the studio, it could have been either, or something else entirely...... His bass tone on record was fantastic - very reminiscent of Chris Squires tone (as was some of his playing actually - "Back to Nature" from the "Secondhand Daylight" album has a bassline that is incredibly Squire-ish). I've always thought of Adamson as the "Post punk Squire", which I'm sure he'd hate me for!
Here's a shot of the excellent Barry Adamson (former Ric man like myself) from Magazine last month -
When I saw Magazine in Manchester earlier this year his bass sound was bloody awful until he changed from his Jaguar to his Ovation Magnum. Awesome player though - one of my favourites.
Hi. New to this game - always visiting but never joined. Saw the post about Odyssey bass and just had to join up. I have one of these and for ages I have been trying to find someone else with one, I was starting to think that mine was unique to the UK. I even contacted a guy in Vancouver, where they were made, who worked closely with Attila - Mike Kinal and he said not many made it over here. At last I have found another one. Stunning bass, great sound, our guitarists favourite. Very pleased to have found you.
Hello there, The bass in this thread was originally mine. I bought it from new in the music shop in Cardiff where I used to help out. Fantastic bass & I only sold it last year because I was playing more guitar & keyboards at the time. Everybody that has played that bass has raved about it. The shop also had the guitar version of the bass & that was bloody lovely too. Good to hear that somebody else has got one - post some pictures of it if you get the chance.

In no way could a 1990s Stingray be classed as an early one. Stingrays are great basses though - if I had to choose between a Stingray & a Fender Jazz I'd pick the Stingray every time.
Oh dear... Why is there such a huge miss to hit rate with heavier music? Alex
To be honest I think this statement is true whatever type of music you're talking about. Vast deserts of mediocrity with just the occasional oasis of brilliance at which to slake your thirst.

Has the original active circuitry been changed or messed about with? That'll make a big difference to the selling price too.
I got two independent texts almost simultaneously saying "Your job is safe" A second text from the drummer merely said "Shambolic"
This would be the point where I'd tell them to stick the band up their arses & let them come begging.....

They'll all need hip replacements by the time they're 40 if they carry on like that..... Is it meant to be serious?
Totally disagree with this - if it is a custom instrument then yes, it should be built to be exactly what you want (providing your luthier knows what you want). But a boutique bass I see as being more like a high end car. You get one because it does what it does, not so you can change it to do something you think it ought to be able to do.
Absolutely.

Why do you think that paying someone who knows what they're doing to set your bass up would "potentially hurt the value of this bass"?
