1.
Here's Mondays choice from Atlansia. Designed by N. Hayashi, better known to all those late 70s Aria Pro II fans as H. Noble we have a Galaxy and a Stealth
Atlansia used to make a one string bass called the Solitaire. Great thread! I've only just seen it, late to the party again........
  2. I've known a few people that have ordered personalised plectrums from various places & the plectrums they've received have always been really cheap, sh*tty quality ones.
  3. Reverb stores (used to be Sound Control) are currently selling their 09 jazz basses for about £825.00.
  4.
Ok - so I'm not 100% sure about Yes from this era. Sounds a bit over-processed to me & missing that classic Squire tone - probably need to listen a bit more though
It's not a generally well thought of album amongst hardcore Yes fans. As far as that particular bass sound goes I think it's a love-it-or-hate-it thing. There's certainly a lot of processing going on there.
Who the hell is Roger Glove?
He's a friend of Stanley Cloak.
  6. There is also a slight clue in the fact that there is a G&L logo on the headstock......
  7. As much as I love Squires sound on the earlier albums, my favourite sound of his has to be the Harmonised (via an Eventide Harmoniser) Rickenbacker used on the "Tormato" album. The sound on "Future times/Rejoice" & "On the silent wings of freedom" is just awesome, and I've never heard anything like it anywhere else.
  8.
not a g&l headstock though, is it??
Yes it is - the early models didn't have that ugly sticky-out bit on them, they looked like a more rounded off Fender headstock.
  9. That's definitely a G&L.
  10. Oh, it's a music theory question. I saw the title & thought somebody had gotten into a spot of bother with a Chinese gang.......
  11.
.......and how to play three Zons at once
The lucky bastard.
  12.
Yeah he nails the sound doesn't he, especially that overdriven volume-swell part. Justin Chancellor is a bit of a genius....very under-appreciated I think, very creative with the instrument! Just listening to Vicarious from '10,000 Days'....absolute stunner! Si
Yes, he's one of my favourite players. I think Tool took an enormous leap forward when he joined. It takes a British bass player to make a good American band great...........
  13. A Moog Bass Murf would give you a similar "sample & hold" type sound - they're not cheap though.
  14.
I hate to say it, but nowadays looking different to the norm is exactly what makes people stand out.
That's a very good point. I'll certainly remember him........
  15.
The video you linked to is by brad of tooltabs.net
Is that actually Justin Chancellors gear he's using, or is he just a serious fanboy? Lovely tone.
  16. It's a lot harder & more hit & miss than using one on guitar. The Ebow's magnetic field isn't really powerful enough to get bass strings vibrating successfully (especially the lower ones and, as others have said, it's a bit of a balancing act getting the string in the right place on the Ebows "foot". It's also one of those things that becomes really clichéd very quickly. It can be done though....
  17. It's a Lakland - you can tell by the shape of the bridge. (That guy has got to be the dweebiest, uncoolest looking bass player I've ever seen. The song was sh*te as well).
  18.
We all know he is ace....
Please refrain from generalisations such as this - I happen to think he's anything but ace.

  20.
As for Mr. Adamson...totally agree - I think he's one of those players under the radar. I've not seen the reformed Magazine - too young first time round, but been listening since about '93. His basslines got me hooked! On an aside, anyone know what bass he used on record? I've seen pictures with a Ric 4001S with modified pups, but I really don't know what he used on LP. I was actually jamming with 'The Correct Use Of Soap' yesterday - what a record!
Go & see them if you get a chance - absolutely fantastic. I never saw them the first time around either - I got into them just after they split up. He used to use what I thought was a Rickenbacker 4001 with a Gibson EBO type pickup in the neck position, but apparently it was a copy (probably an Ibanez). He was one of the few players to regularly use an Ovation Magnum (Awesome basses!). The Ovations could sound quite Ricky-ish so it's difficult to know what he's using in the studio, it could have been either, or something else entirely...... His bass tone on record was fantastic - very reminiscent of Chris Squires tone (as was some of his playing actually - "Back to Nature" from the "Secondhand Daylight" album has a bassline that is incredibly Squire-ish). I've always thought of Adamson as the "Post punk Squire", which I'm sure he'd hate me for!
  21.
Here's a shot of the excellent Barry Adamson (former Ric man like myself) from Magazine last month -
When I saw Magazine in Manchester earlier this year his bass sound was bloody awful until he changed from his Jaguar to his Ovation Magnum. Awesome player though - one of my favourites.

I can't hear the bass either - the guitar is much too loud.
  23. Does this Vigier have a carbon fibre neck? Is that the original bridge?
  24.
If you must have Fender, try and source a Jap one. You'll save some money over a US one and the quality should be excellent.
+1
