1. Weekend warrior / semi-pro. I'm of moderate ability. I can't solo for toffee, and I'd last about five seconds on a jazz gig. Thankfully I'm blessed with a good ear hewn from years of playing and jamming with others without a musical note in sight (I'm not endorsing this approach, btw). All these years I've been driven by the desire to play the right bass part on songs I like, with people I like, in interesting places. I gave up on 'I simply must crack this difficult lick' or 'How can I solo better?' when I was about 20. Again, this isn't an endorsement of my approach, more an explanation of it...
2.
This is clearly an unfair advantage and you should be disqualified
I've heard loads of 'em, and I'll still be wrong...
3.
Ah, decisions decisions... Emailing with Adrian right now... Hard times for an impatient man: I can order something they have in stock and have it next week? or order something only slightly different that would be a *bit* more to my liking, and wait for a while (and pay a chunk more)... Hmmm. The difference is just the neck profile... a 4 string with a 40mm width at the nut and 21mm deep at 1st fret is certainly comfy and noticeably wider than a typical Jazz. But I'd rather have a 42-43mm wide one and slightly deeper too, maybe 23mm? If in addition I could get a glossy slightly tinted lacquered neck then it would be *perfect*. But... ah, what to do, what to do!?
I feel your pain. I placed my order two days ago, and I'm still mailing Adrian to chat about changes. The poor bugger.
4.
During the test, one bass player (Magnus Eugenson, ME5 by the way - https://www.youtube....h?v=Nydcz9OYibI)
Ooof... what a player...!
5.
What is this "heft" we're talking about? Surely there's nothing that can't be achieved with some clever compression and EQ?
Presumably that's what the likes of TC and Genz have been attempting with their magic circuits. None of it has worked for me.... So far.
6.
Nothing beats the power on demand of a bit lump of iron.
This.
7. I've gone 10 / 15 / 12, based purely on 'brighter tone, smaller driver.' I imagine I'm wrong, though...!
8.
Considering Pino doesn't read music I guess he does "bluff" it, if you hire Pino it's cause you want that Pino sound - his ability to read wouldn't come into it I don't think.
Pino doesn't really have a 'sound' these days. I imagine he can do pretty much anything tonally. He's just a natural player with great ears, taste and feel.
9. Mine'll be a while yet. :-( Honestly, the level of detail if been able to specify is incredible. Adrian has been so helpful and patient.
10.
There is a German-made fiddle pickup that is mounted in the sound post, which is fabulous - can't remember the name offhand, but it's not cheap.
Possibly Schertler?
11.
aha! what did you go for? what did you go for?
It's a secret. I've been waiting for Fender to make something similar for years, but it shows no signs of happening. I'm guessing it would have cost the far side of three grand if I'd gone to the Custom Shop, and I still wouldn't have been able to specify everything to the nth degree like I've been able to with Adrian. As it stands, it's going to be hand-built with top-drawer bits, and it's going to cost less than a Lakland Skyline. Incredible. Of course the proof of the pudding is in the eating, but I'm SO excited...
12. Alea jacta est...
13.
My '72 P is the same at the first fret (21mm) but a little deeper at the 12th fret (25mm). Measured using digital calipers.
That's great - thank you. The reason I've asked is that I've measured my '71 for someone (no, I'm not selling it), and when I told them it's 24mm at the 1st and 25mm at the 12th, they mentioned that that's unusually big...
14. Awesome... thanks, Lozz.
15. Hey gang If you have a (preferably early) 70s P, and you have the means to be able to, could you measure the depth of the neck from the back to the the top of the fingerboard at the first fret, please? (Just to clarify - to the top of the board, not the top of the fret.) Also, I'd be interested in the measurement at the 12th fret too. Thanks for your help :-)
16. He's confirmed that the necks are clear lacquered :-) My order will be placed soon...
17. Ah - thanks for reminding me about the lacquer! I'll ask him. I'm gradually pinning everything down. He's being very patient with me...
18. He's literally just replied - if I send him the dimensions of my '71, they'll copy it. :-)
19. Subscribed. FWIW, I've just emailed the same question to Adrian...
20.
wow, some very attractive instruments there! I wish I could try them, I love the look/specs/price of some of the Jakes in stock! I wonder what the neck is like. I love the wide "Classic 50s" Precision style, and I'd hate a Jazz type neck... Pity the necks are not lacquered either. Hmmm... You are a bad bunch, putting ideas in my mind, and I am indeed looking for a Precision at the moment...
I've had an email chat with Adrian. You can spec pretty much any neck profile you like. Didn't realise they weren't lacquered - I wonder if it's an option? I'm really struggling with specs at the minute. I want a passive PJ that nails the P tone, but there's so many options I don't know what would suit me best. Also, to get my target weight (3.8kg) Adrian says I'd need to go for a chambered body. Just wondering how that would affect tone. So much to consider...
21. The key to a successful dictatorship is having faith in the dictator. The dictator wants me to play bass. It's not so they can micro-manage what I play. It's because they trust me and know whatever I do will be right. If the dictator is making bad decisions, time to go.
22. Just bought something from Andy - it arrived within a couple of days and was perfectly packed. Brilliant. Cheers, Andy!
23.
Did you get the vibe of what happened 50 years ago? I would like to go, but no idea if you get the sense of what happened. I don`t believe you need to be around at the time to get the feeling of the place, but if all the history has gone, it will be hard to get any sense of what happened. It could be true, as i wasn`t born in the late 1800`s. I went to Tombstone a few years ago, and it was hard to feel any vibe there. I couldn`t really imagine Wyatt Earp strolling around the place. Seemed like a theme place more than anything
Yes, I did. A lot of it feels like a cash-in, but I've read enough books and heard enough accounts of what it was like to let my mind fill in the blanks.
24. WoT Jnr. is called Jet, which may or may not be a coincidence...
25. The most 'successful' (I don't mean commercially) bands I'm in have a dictator who is aware of their strengths and limitations. His or her judgement is trusted and respected on the stuff they really know about, and the rest of the responsibility is shared.
