1. I only play my 5 these days but I very, very, very rarely use the B-string. My problem is that I love the rest of the bass. If someone could transform it into a 4 string I'd definitely do it!
2. Most function bands are going to be playing the same songs. That comes with the territory. The ones I have seen who are "different" have normally managed it by having an unusual / uncommon band lineup and being clever with the arrangements. Things like full brass section, no guitarist but two keyboards instead, that kind of thing. Or doing all the "common" songs but in a different style---Mark Ronson-ing them all, if you will. Sadly arranging well is quite a difficult skill and not necessarily a common one either!
3.
That set up at the top was actually a vastly reduced version of the original THREE boards which used to surround him.
Thats what I was getting at, but I wasn't all that clear I guess I think he uses it really well (even if I'm not a massive fan of the music they make)---but theres' no way you'd catch me using a rig like that unless I had a roadie or 6 to cart it all around and plug it in for me!! (Maybe thats the point?)
4. Impressive, but silly. http://www.premierguitar.com/Magazine/Issue/2012/Mar/10_Pro_Pedalboards_Revealed.aspx?Page=7 Whatcha reckon'?
5. Beautiful. But I have to echo the "too far away" comments :-(
6. The sound on my computer is playing up but I seem to remember this is pretty awesome: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-SlvZF6k5bE And no-one's mentioned the Pink Panther? Shame on you all!
7.
I just received one of these pedals, a Joyo Ultimate Drive, for £30 and a few pennies delivered, ordered through Amazon, 2 day delivery. It appears to be the same as some model branded as Harley Benton by Thomann, and it's supposed to be a clone of the Fulltone OCD. I bought it because for the £££ and the reviews it got on TB it seemed pretty decent, and I like what the OCD does to guitar and bass. Anybody has tried one of these? Mine is still in the box and I will not be able to test it until tonight. Not heard anything about how they sound on bass. The tube screamer clone is meant to be awesome.
8.
Sell one of the Sandberg 4s if you have to, but keep the Markbass stuff. You will miss it for sure.
I'd agree with this. My own philosophy is---"if its not getting used, then sell it". However, if it *is* getting used, and you're not desperate for cash, then there's nothing wrong with having nice gear. So I wouldn't rush to sell anything (especially in the current market---it is *definitely* a buyer's market out there just now).
9. There is a lot of good (free) guitar lesson stuff here: http://www.justinguitar.com/
10. Personally---I'd play it. First in the set. And then stop. And not play anything else. But then again I probably wouldn't agree to play at a queen's jubilee gig in the first place...
11. Quick update for the benefit of people searching in future- a Hiscox STD-EBS fits perfectly.

13.
Thanks - I'm not a ferrari man, rather more second hand 3-series BMW really; I think all the electronic differences in method are lost on me for now. Can you suggest a relatively cheap (sub £50) entry-level compressor that is worth a play with, that might be ok for gigging? I don't want to spend £140 - £200 on s'thing that I'm not convinced works for me but £40 - £ 50 is worth a punt to dip my toe in, so to say. Is it false economy if all the cheap comps are really pants? Are there any half decent cheap models worth a go? Do you have to spend over £100 to get something decent?
Marshall Ed-1. It would be good at twice the price.
14.
The drummer is responsible for playing the drums. Everyone in the band is responsible for playing in time and in tune.
^^^ This. Because of the nature of the instrument the drummer is really important when it comes to keeping time but its not *only* his responsibility. I've seen too many bands who change tempo willy-nilly and try to blame the drummer when its actually all of them at fault and the drummer has been forced to "go with it".
15.
Because I sometimes struggle to even find the intervals of the next chord reliably if they're going by too fast, so I think the chances of me remembering all these bonus ideas are pretty slim.
Honestly, it just takes a bit of work and you start to get there. I don't think its really much more daunting than a beginner bassist asking "do you experienced guys really know all the notes to the 50 songs you do for your wedding setlist?" Bilbo---would you recommend the book as a good "general music interest" book or is it more for the serious jazzer? I used to be quite into jazz but whilst I'm still a listener I don't really ever play it anymore.
16. If your main reason for wanting that bass is aesthetics then I'd just get a black P bass and stick a tort pickguard on it. I don't think that bass will have much appeal beyond Pete Wentz fans so if you ever want to sell it I think you might find it tricky.
17. I got an email from Dave last night warning/apologizing for it so I think he knows.
18. Stick the pics on photobucket and post a link Where are you based?
19. I have no experience of their P basses but I used to own one of their Musicman copies which was great and I still own one of their Jazz copies which is absolutely brilliant. I've heard the odd complaint about their QC but I think if you get a good one then you're laughing.
20. Maybe its just me but so long as I can hear what I'm playing I don't really care what it sounds like on stage. Just so long as its good out the front!
21. I think they look amazing. Would love to try one but I can't see myself ever spending that much on a bass...
22. I really want one of these (especially in that finish!)... Sadly I have no money to spend just now
23. I'm interested in doing the same (mainly because I want non-standard finish options...). *grabs chair*
24.
Had a good listen, the drums and sax were great but the bass and keys sounded awful.
My thoughts too. That style of bass playing does nothing for me, sadly.
