1. I like the black one the best, with white a distant second.
2.
While in theory having alternative instruments on hand for different sounds when you are recording can be a good idea, I would suggest that unless you are booked in for a week of tracking with plenty of time for experimentation you should work out which basses you want to use on which song before you set foot in the studio. I took 6 basses with me for my bands most recent recording session, but I has also spent the previous 4 rehearsals matching the right bass to each song that we intended to record. Also these were all my basses so I was completely familiar with how they played and sounded. Personally I would't want to be recording with any instrument I was unaccustomed to playing. 3. I love the sound of jazzes but jazz necks are a bit on the small side for my liking.
4. That's the one. I'm a bit worried it may weigh too much to be practical. I'm half wanting a giggable amp, despite not really needing one.
5. There's a Trace Elliot Series 6 GP7 Combo for sale near me. Any good? I can't find out much about them.
6. The 70s Jazz is available as a Deko just now: http://www.thomann.de/gb/harley_benton_jb_75_na_vintage_serie_deko.htm
7. Thanks for the info. I've been posting over on that other thread too. I've got some Elixir baritone strings that are 0.012 - 0.068 so I'll give them a try. I also like bigger strings so I suspect like you I'll be going up again in future.
8. Cheers gents I had to turn the truss rod about a half a turn to get it playable but now it seems to be just about right. I'll leave it overnight and see how it settles. Now that its playable, first of all I have to say that I love the sound of the neck pickup. What a lovely sound. Suspect P90s will be going in my other guitar too now... Second of all, the tuners on it are utter pony. They'll be fine for mucking about at home but if I use this to record or play live I'll probably change them. I don't know how much of an issue this is but several of the tuners do not sit flush with the back of the headstock. I'll maybe try to fix them at somepoint. Second of all, it has the absolute classic Jaguar bridge problem of rattling saddles/bridge, especially on the thinner strings. Amplified you can't hear it but unamplified its horrible. I'm going to put different (heavier, I think) strings on it so when I do I'll try and sort the bridge out---any more precise tips on the process to follow to do this much appreciated. Overall, though, for £63 I am utterly delighted. A very usable instrument that sounds nice. Hopefully with a few tweaks it can only improve. Finally, now that I think its a keeper, any ideas where to source a trem arm?
9.
Should be fine. AFAICS from my own experience and the discussion on the other forum linked to in this thread, the problem is simply a slightly misaligned bridge which doesn't allow for even string spacing due to the position of the intonation and height adjustment screws. I hadn't even noticed there was a problem until I re-strung it, and the guitarist in The Terrortones who used it during our recent recording session didn't comment at all on the irregular string spacing issue.
Well, its here... Cosmetically its in excellent condition, but it needs some setting up playing wise. Any note below the 5th fret is choking out (on every string). Its bad enough that I can't actually sound the open 3rd/4th strings. I measured the relief by capo-ing at the first fret and fretting at the 20th---when I do this there is no relief at all so I assume the neck is convex. What do you folks recommend? Tweaking the truss rod and going from there? Or something else?
Hope so... I guess I'm just paranoid that Thomann are devious enough to send out all the good condition Dekos first before sending out the ones that are actually unusable Paranoid, moi?
11. My baritone should be getting delivered today. Beginning to get serious "bet its a dog" paranoia
12.
In a seemingly suicidal attempt to loose business, dropbox has decided to stop supporting apple users who still operate older operating systems, or pre intel mac users as we're know. ...is it just dropbox naively shooting themselves in the foot? There are other options after all...
Suicidal? Shooting themselves in the foot? I realise this is irritating for you but pre-Intel Macs are probably less than 0.5% of their clientbase. Even Apple have dropped support for hardware that old. There have been five major versions of OSX since then. http://www.netmarketshare.com/operating-system-market-share.aspx?qprid=10&qpcustomd=0 http://www.netmarketshare.com/report.aspx?qprid=11&qpaf=&qpcustom=Mac+OS+X+10.5&qpcustomb=0 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Usage_share_of_operating_systems
13. I am no expert on compression but personally I would never spend that kind of money on a compressor without metering, unless I was buying it because I wanted a really squashy "effecty" compression that would be easy to hear. Dialing in subtle compression without metering is a task I personally find impossible.
14. If you're there for a while buy something (probably second hand) and then sell it when you leave. Most gear is a lot cheaper in the US than it is in Europe.
15.
Been playing for 2 years and definitely wish that I had had some lessons but no one around here.
Jennifer Clark in Glasgow is an excellent bass tutor. She is a member here but I haven't seen her online for a while. Her username is Endorka or her website is here: http://www.jenclarkmusic.com/bass-guitar-double-tuition-lessons-glasgow.shtml I had some lessons with her a few years ago that really helped me out.
16. I think you're discovering the reason why lots of bassists use clean blends when using distortion/overdrive, especially when using pedals that are voiced for guitars instead of basses. You'll probably find that it works OK once you've set it up at gigging volume.
17.
They've sold out, so you must have had one of the last ones.
Lets hope that doesn't mean I get a dog Can absolutely guarantee that a telecaster or les paul goldtop will appear now after me making rash promises about not buying anything else for a while
18. I was showing Mrs Psychosis the Mosrite-style baritone when she let slip "thats pretty". I'm sure you can guess the rest.
19.
Just got back from my mate's where we were writing, I used his TRB1006 and absolutely loved it, what an instrument. He mentioned he didn't get on with the neck, so might see if I can persuade him to sell it to me at some point
I had a TRB1005 and the sound was incredible but the neck was just too big for me. Such a shame because it sounded great.
20.
Ha ha! I think when you hear you might change your mind.
Look forward to hearing it. How did the HB Baritone hold up?
21. Really interesting read. Thanks for posting.
22. I always use Google to search here.Type the following to make use of Google's "Site" feature: Aguilar AG500 site:basschat.co.uk
23. Looks great. Is the neck as much of a handful as it looks?
24.
Baritone guitar and soundtrack guitar demos
Saw those this morning. I've now had the opportunity to buy loads of different Dekos but never anything I actually want. Grr.
25. The Soundmagic E10 are excellent. I think mine were £22.
