1. Wasn't Guy Pratt seen around these parts not so long ago?
2. Some attic fayre here, and surely too 80's looking for most, but I think it's so garish I'm quite drawn to it. Worth a punt? http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...e=STRK:MEWAX:IT
3. ah here it is... I should have known this one wouldn't slip by unnoticed.
4. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/FENDER-PRECISION-BAS...=item3f06e683b4 There's something about this bass that seems too good to be true. It looks to be in far too nice a condition to be so old, so unless it's been hidden in someones uncles loft for the last 40 years... well... I'd like you to take a look at it for me and tell me what you think.
5. Some very sensible comments have made this thread restore a little of my faith in musiciankind. I did a few years stint as live engineer, starting out with a couple of years in the studio, then spending alot of time shadowing accomplished live engineers for free whilst being an extra roadie, mic placement tweaker and general cable rat. Worked my way up through theatre work to meeting more and more arsey rock and roll gits who's MO seemed to be at odds with anything and everything I needed to do. Unsurprisingly these gigs more often seemed to be the ones where I was working under the most pressure (time/equipment/quality of gear) and wondering what, if at all, I was going to get paid. To be treated as some sort of incompetent, anti-musician by someone who doesn't understand what they're asking for, was one of the reasons I walked away from the profession, (but mainly the stress of its feast/famine financial situation). The bigger shows with more professional musicians understood that their responsibility was to play their instruments well and the engineers job was to make all the instruments sit together and sound right for the PA for the room. If you don't have faith in your soundguy then you need to take steps to ensure that, the next time you play, that you do it with someone you can trust. That doesn't involve being aggressive or throwing a wobbly at your next engineer becaused you think they should be going about their business the way you think they should. You won't be doing yourself any favours. /rant
6.
Purple Chili PCB112NT could be an option. I got one and lime it very much. Light and loud
In the spirit that people just tend to recommend what they use, if you get the chance, I'd suggest you try the Purple Chili 12's aswell. Don't know how flat they are, but they're certainly light, loud and well made.
7. I'm interested in this as well, wanting a recommendation for quality high tension flats for a 5 string.
8. I can't afford a £1 action so I've had to settle for 50 pence worth. High tension Labellas help and I can get a bit of clank if I really dig in, but no buzz thankfully.
9.
I used to give my basses male names (Frank, Harold etc...) way back when, but now that they're mainly tools to do a job (in a good way) they're asexual and anonymous.
I agree, I see fender basses as the ford transit or makita power drill of bass instruments.
To me the Fender Jazz Bass has a flowing and sensuously curvacious silhouette for the most part whereas the P-Bass has a more utilitarian and masculine profile. Aren't J's favoured over P's by female bassists due to their more comy body contours and better weight distribution?
I thought female bassists might favour P basses exactly because of their simple utalitarian design, when trying to compete in a mainly masculine pastime... though maybe now I am talking bollocks.
10. I'm verging on offering up my, much loved but, common garden jazz bass for sale on the forum and I was wondering how best to describe it? It's the second american fender jazz I've owned and probably not the last. A pale gold with a maple board and seems definately femine compared to the first black on rosewood one I started with. Not a workhorse bass that I'd like to beat a disgruntled punter off the stage with but certainly deserving of playing in anyones company. I'll be sorry to see it go... but I want to try a five string and I can't afford both. I've never gone so far as giving it a name bacause it isn't a Disney movie... but it's most definately femine I think. Whats your bass? Do you coax it to make the sound you want or bend it to your will? Or am I talking bollocks?
11.
I've recently bought myself some planet waves cable simply for the lifetime guarantee
Might wanna put that receipt somewhere safe. My last planet waves cable didn't last very long at all.
12. http://stores.ebay.co.uk/GITARREN-VON-GITA...d=p4634.c0.m322 I got one from here earlier this year.
13. I've got an American Jazz with an S1 switch which produces a passable (but not exact) precision sound. Only second hand now unless you can find some new old stock, or you could mod a new one. Here's one that'll leave you plenty of change for a new amp.
14. mmm... more octave bounce needed in some of these suggestions
15. I think some people might be just listing their favourite big tunes they know how to play. Your average Joe on the street isn't going to be able to name half of these. Wha about Around The World by Daft Punk?
16.
The lighting in the photos will always affect the perceived colour, but that might be Shoreline Gold?
+1 looks like it. Nice buy.
17. I bought one of M Bass old sharks, at the same time as bidding but losing out on this one funnily enough, and thought it was a cracking instrument. It was usurped by a jazz because I prefer the strings closer together, and if it wasn't for this bass wider string spacing I'd snap it up. Good luck with the sale.
18.
may be the picks but is really shoreline gold? lovely bass all the same!!
I've always thought it more like a metallic beige but yes that's shoreline gold. I've got one that could be its maple boarded twin.
19. Same thing happened to me not long ago and it's a pain. The seller said my winning bid wasn't enough and asked me to offer him more money. The only thing you can realistically do is report them to ebay and leave negative feedback.
20. I'm disappointed that this thread isn't about some of the awesome poses thrown out by hard rockin bassists on stage.
21. I bought a short scale a couple of months ago because I was having a similar problem, but it ended up spending long periods sitting in my living room with a hat on it whilst I carried on playing my familiar Jazz. So I got rid after promising myself I'd explore the 5 string option to alleviate the incredibly tedious yet painful, "Peter Gunn R.S.I.©"
