1. Well it's not a '75 model but Andy Baxter has a nice looking Shergold for sale... http://www.andybaxterbass.com/details.php?id=353 P
2. Can I ask where you had the respray done and how much is cost? You also get a bump :-) P
3.
Thanks I did see that but as I say not buying at the moment just getting ideas. Also thinking of something other than a Fender. Shergold is an interesting shout I do like the look of them. Thanks
The other thing about Shergold is that it's one of the founding brands of the "modern" UK lutherie business. I seem to recall that Rob Green of Status fame partly learned his trade there and I also vaguely remember there being some Wal connections (the Mk 1 Wal body shape is really not far from a Shergold Marathon). Was Ian Waller involved in the active electronics fitted to some Shergold models I wonder? Hmmm I'm arguing myself into a position of Shergold GAS. Duh! P
4. A Shergold maybe? Something like this: http://basschat.co.uk/topic/244852-1980-shergold-marathon-mk1a-for-sale/page__p__2580376__hl__shergold__fromsearch__1#entry2580376 That's a 1980 one but they were around I'm pretty sure in the mid 1970s Phil
5. That's really lovely. Always wanted one. Good luck with the sale. P
6.
I gigged mine on Sunday and was blown away, for £118 this is awesome value for money, if i could get a white one for the same price i would. Its got tone by the bucket load especially with the flats, neck is quick and its not too heavy, whats not to like?
Apparently it was only the black one that didn't sell well so had to be shifted by dropping the price. The other colour options were silver and red (all with rosewood fingerboards) and they're both now pretty hard to find. The only way you'll get a white one is by refinishing the body, which, if done professionally, will cost significantly more than you paid for the bass in the first place. I know where you're coming from though, I really want mine in a kind of rich surf green (with a humbucker at the neck while I'm at it). What flats have you put on yours? I was wondering about flats but I don't want the tone to go too dull and thumpy - I still need a bit of twang and cut for some songs. Phil
7. Elsewhere on Basschat you'll find some pictures of my Squire Vintage Modified Jaguar sporting a VM Tele Bass neck. This of course means that the original neck is up for grabs. The neck is pretty much as you'd expect - little used and in perfect condition. For those unfamiliar with the VM Jag, the neck is more Jazz profile than Precision. As far as I'm aware, it should fit just about any Squire P or Jag bass variant (it won't fit a Squire Tele bass without modification to the end of the heel), but please do some homework before you buy. If you need any neck dimensions measured please just ask. I'm thinking £80 including UK shipping is fair, but I'm open to near offers. Phil
8. OK, so as promised here's a few pics of my VM Jag with a mint green scratch plate and a VM Tele neck. It's now cost rather more than £118 (or the £150 that I paid), but I think looks pretty cool. I far prefer the chunkier neck too. Phil PS. The old neck is looking for a home: http://basschat.co.uk/topic/248899-
9.
I'm glad it doesn't come in maple fingerboard, because I don't think I could resist the temptation...
I've bought a previously loved maple fingerboard neck to stick on mine, I just haven't got around to doing the necessary woodwork yet. I have put a mint green scratch plate on it though. I'll post some pics when I've done the fingerboard. P
10. That IS a good deal. I paid £150 for mine at GAK a few months ago and was chuffed. Seems fender in Europe had a warehouse full of the black version and needed them sold. They did it through a variety of specific dealers. Anyway the bass is not at all bad. Boring colour and a bit limited tonally, but it's well built and well finished. Mine needed a bit of a set up and some different strings, but that's pretty much the way with any new instrument. P
11.
Undisputed winner of the Beedster "Best Bass on Basschat for Quite a While Award". Lovely.
My thoughts exactly. How about a bunch of us buy it together and co-own it like wealthy fools do with race horses :-) P
12.
Lovely looking example. I've been in touch with Paul at Wal and he's considering making the Pro series again. Would be nice to see. GLWTS
Paul making the Pro series again? Now that really would be something, although of course it would also mean the immediate sale of a kidney.
13. Oh dear that's lovely. One of those passive Pro 1s has long been on my bucket list of basses and I'm playing much more fretted these days. It all adds up. I should have it. Now, who's going to give me two and a half grand? Good luck with the sale.
14. I used to own one just like that. Lovely, characterful bass. Good luck with the sale. Phil
15. Don't do this to me Gareth! I've always fancied one of those. Anyway, we need to talk about my crazy idea... Phil
16. Just to tie-up loose ends, I ordered a custom scratch plate from Sims and it all worked out a treat. £53 including return shipping. P
17. Wow! That is lovely. The first Lakland I've ever coveted.
18.
Done my own SQUIER custom p already. Sunburst with all maple white/pearl blocks/binding. And the black one also, but that's a Fender bitsa rather than Squier. The Squier wins, though. That's my go to bass.
I'm in the middle of a Squire bits build too. My black VM Jaguar HB already has a new mint green pick guard courtesy of Martin Sims, and will over the new few weeks have a maple fingerboard neck from a from Squire 50s Tele bass fitted. It already sounds very cool but will soon look equally cool.
19.
I love the idea Phil, and actually it makes relatively good sense for them commercially too - loads of parts sitting around doing nothing that could easily be bolted together and sold at a premium because of the customisation, without really impacting 'proper' Fender sales because it's 'still a Squier'.
Hmmm, I reckon it'd do exactly that - steal proper Fender sales. If I had say, £500 to spend on a custom, personally configured Squire or a standard MIM Fender, I'd go for the Squire. It'd be an interesting thread to start actually: Configure your ideal Squire bass. You can select components from every currently available model. P
20. I wish I was Fender you know 'cause with the parts bin I'd have available there'd be endless hours of fun to be had creating cool new models to torment people with. That 50s P Bass looks especially lovely. I wonder what Fender would say to a proposal for a "Squire Custom Shop" business? The idea would be that customers could specify a bass created from almost any combination of the currently available Squire parts. The parts would be ordered direct from the various Squire manufacturing companies, the basses put together (with any mild fettling necessary) and shipped direct to the end customer. I reckon the business would be swamped with orders. Anyway, in reality, I know exactly how Fender would respond to that idea, but hey, I can dream can't I? Phil
21. Hmmm, I suspect I won't be able to hold out for ever on ordering a Maruszczyk. P
22. Gulp! I've been lusting after that bass for a while now. Well done for buying it. Is it a 32" or 34"?
23. Mmmmm, it's not the colours I would have chosen, but that's lovely. Is it 32" scale? P
24. Have an, "oh my giddy aunt that's gorgeous" bump. P
