1. I've always loved the look of these but I do wonder about the balance on a strap. Surely it must be just a bit headstock heavy? P
2. Wednesday afternoon cuppa bump...
3. Thanks for all the positive comments guys. Yes the Amp One is an extraordinary thing and I may well be mad to get rid of it. I really do fancy a change though….
4. OK, I'm not entirely sure about this because the Amp One is bloody brilliant and I'm very happy with it. However, I do fancy a change, so along with cash I'm open to trades - the only requirements being small(ish) and light. I'm thinking Mark Bass or maybe Orange, and almost certainly a combo... This Amp One is just over six years old, although it had its entire amp module replaced when the original started to go haywire a couple of years ago. It's been regularly but not incessantly gigged and is in good condition, as you can see from the pictures. Comes complete with a padded "gig bag". I don't have any packaging so a pickup (from Brighton) would probably be most sensible. Over to you... EDIT! OK, I've seen something I quite fancy so here's a £50 price drop….£600 now.
5.
The standard round heel will fit ok. It's when putting Tele bass necks on standard Precisions etc (a la Tim Bogert) that you need to get the chisels out...
I can confirm that having just put a tele bass neck on a Jaguar body. It was a very easy mod though to do though. P
6. I wonder if it's coincidence that The Gallery website has just had a major make-over (it's way better now). The odd item might easily have got linked with the wrong price in the database. P
7. There was a time, ten years or so ago, when I owned a pair of Steinberger L2s (one fretted, one fretless) that were just a few serial numbers apart. Both of them were in really good condition, complete with the often lost plug-in leg rest. I sold them both (far too cheaply). What a stupid arse I was. What was I thinking? P
8.
Annoyingly I was all set to put an old set of Chromes on my Ray5 when I discovered that the D wasn't long enough anymore - it had been on something else and I'd cut it short. But I have now got La Bella White Nylons on it and it is sound fab! really full and plummy. I might end up keeping them on it.
I was going to suggest LaBella White Nylons too - fabulous and unusual tone, especially on a fretless. They are pretty low tension though. P
9.
I wouldn't be surprised at all if the bass in the video was just a non-functioning prop...
That's what I'm thinking. Bearing in mind the "creative" transparent visual theme for the video, the instruments are probably custom made props. P
10. Not sure if it really covers subtle tonal differences between Mk 1 and Pro IIE, but Trevor Raggatt's site here: http://walbasshistory.blogspot.co.uk has loads of useful (and reliable) info. Phil
11. Ohh, that's a nice one! Black machine heads is unusual too. P
12.
BTW did you know that Muds bassist Ray Stiles wrote Kylie Minoges number 1 hit "Cant Get You Out Of My Head??
I met Ray Stiles a few time back in the day. Lovely guy. I bought an Ibanez bass from him too. P
13.
All the Wals don't have flat fingerboards? Standard is 12" radius I believe? In any case, a solid shedua body is pretty special, stunning instrument!
I remember the standard radius was 12" too. My Mk 1 fretless has a radiused board. Solid shedua body is really unusual though. The real hen's teeth Wal I want to see though is one with a P-bass body profile. It was a no-cost option when I ordered mine in '83 and I thought about it at the time. Kind of wish I'd done it now. I've never seen one in the flesh. P
14.
The prices are very cheap (£600 for a Stingray, '77 Jazz bass for £850), but I would imagine that getting them out of the country would be a challenge.
Anybody that is tempted to give it a go needs to remember the shipping cost (I'd guess around £100), the import duty (probably around 4%) and the VAT (20%) that will be added by HMRC. The shipping agent will almost certainly add some significant "handling" charges too.
15. Hmmm, seems to be a range of opinions here. I'm verging towards the, "it's possible if you do your research" opinion, but then it's not my money potentially at risk (although guitarbank appears to have some lovely basses at pretty good prices and I can feel GAS rising). I'd like to know a bit more about guitarbank. The website appears to be one of a professional, reputable organisation, but hey, we all know how easy that is! Do we have any Russian basschat members? P
16. All A mate of mine is hankering over a guitar being sold by Guitarbank.ru. Does anybody here have any experience guitarbank, or of buying from Russia generally? Ta Phil
17. Hmmm, I can kind of understand why the previous owner "customised" it on the back :-) P
18.
http://pages.ebay.co...id=181603449956 Just spotted on eBay, not 100% perfect but cheap.
Thanks Andy, I saw that one and enquired about it. Thing is, I don't really want lined, and like most lined fretless, it has its side dots between the fret lines. which I think is one of the most stupid ideas known to "man". P
19.
Wish I'd bought one of these years ago when I had the chance.
Me too. There was one in Andy's in Denmark St. that I had a go on a couple of times. I only used to visit Andy's very infrequently and played the Eccles twice at least so it must have lingered there for years (I'm pretty sure it was the same one each time). P
20. Some Shuker Uberhorn models do: http://www.shukergui...orngallery.html Phil
21. Kev's bass is truly gorgeous thing Chris but I don't have that kind of cash to spend I'm afraid. Also, the fretless neck I'm after would end up attached to the body of a Squire Jaguar HB so something with serious vintage credentials would be a waste. Police Squad and Pfretrock's suggestions are more in the right ball-park but side dots between frets on a fretless are a pet hate (along with being one of the stupidest things know to man) The hunt continues. Phil
22. All, I'd quite like to get hold of an unlined fretless P-bass neck with a maple fingerboard. It's not the kind of thing you see going "previously loved" all that often, so what do we reckon is the best (i.e most cost effective) option on the new replacement neck front? Warmouth? Mighty Mite? Somewhere else? Phil

24. Blimey that's so lovely. I did a telephone interview with Charlie Haden a few years back for a magazine piece I was writing - just about the scariest phone call I've ever had to make. P
