1.
We're bass players... we don't warrant a shortlist!
The best Bass Player joke I heard so far - 'How many bass players does it take to change a light bulb? None, because we're not afraid of the dark.'
You lot are always getting angry at the telly. Just don't watch the telly!
We dropped Sky TV when the box started malfunctioning. Got a Freeview box.. it's amazing how much less telly we watch now!
2. Self-employed, deffo.. I do this as well as employed work, and fill in the dreaded Tax Return each year. I sometimes pay extra tax, sometimes not. Against: A bit more hassle, and you may have to shell out some extra money in tax assuming you already earn more than your personal tax allowance. For: You're now legal, and you may be able to reclaim some of that tax you've already paid from the employed work. You can claim various expenses incurred in the self-employed work against your overall taxable income. Best thing is to talk to your local tax office - they are there to make everything work properly and will furnish you with all the relevant information. 3. I took the caps off the tone pots on mine (many moons ago) so they just acted as a gradual coil tap. I also got a few replacement pots as they were a custom taper for the T-40.. might still have them in a deep recess of the Projects Box. Great bass, mine was natural and maple neck. Only sold it as I only played fretless.. maybe should have done the conversion!
4.
Statistically speaking, so far 98% of respondents in this poll have a less than 1:20 chance of breaking a string on a gig. That settles it for me. I will continue on my mean, lazy way and not bring a spare set of strings!
Tightwad!!
5. I once broke two strings in the first set of one gig.. that's when I gave up boiling strings! Hardly ever break them these days, but always carry a spare set - even for the double bass. 'Twould feel like a lame excuse for messing up a paying gig.
6. Where are you Arrakis? Would love to try the Rotovibe as I don't know just how it sounds. Looking for something which I'll recognise when I find it!
7. I have the Stentor one, which is about £45. Most decent shops can obtain it, I can organise it for you. It generally travels in my car so I'll most likely have it at gigs in case of emergency(!) A friend of mine improvised one - you need a sharp end and enough weight at the other end to move the post by judicious tapping. A good general starting point in this MADLY FRUSTRATING procedure is to set the post about 3/4" behind the treble foot of the bridge, perpendicular to both back and top. Any change to the distance from the bridge or from the rib will alter your tone. I've never had the patience to really experiment with this, as you have to slacken and tighten the strings every time you move it. I think Mr.Bassman has a book frm the States which has a whole chapter on the subject. Last point - when your head is right down to the bass so you can look through the F holes, the sound of the post falling over (yet again) and hitting the back of the bass MAKES YOU JUMP! Good luck!
8. Nicely! Good chortle on a slow morning!
Tweeters - can they be disconnected? I deliberately avoid contact with anyone who tweets so the answer must be yes.
9. I used to use the AKG VHF system, and the tone/volume were great. Get a True Diversity receiver on whichever system you use, as it will minimise the likelihood of dead spots.
10. YES PLEASE!!!! West Yorkshire, environs of Bradford. Tried the Compact on the last tour, marvellous piece of kit but I prefer that bit more punch, so this might just be the dangerous ticket!
11. I did this job yonks back with my Peavey 410T cabs.. the best thing by far is to completely disconnect the crossover, so all the signal just hits the main speakers. Sounded much better for my taste, but that's me.. now I'm on a EA 112CXL which has a tweeter that I leave about half way up.
12.
May not be porn to you guys as many of you have some simply beautiful kit but in downscaling I have found my perfect rig! Sorry if this bores you but someone out ther might like it!!
Bass Gear = Porn Simples!
13. A quick vote for a decent fellow, and this price is a STEAL for a Paulman instrument!!
14.
but why not a combo. do they shake themselves apart or is it just a weight thing. I reckon a 2 10 or 1 15 would be manageable for the few gigs I do......
For me, it was a flexibility thing.. same amp head but different cabs depending on the gig.
15. I've got a Trace AH250SMX head which I bought when they first came out so early 90s.. bought it so as not to keep carrying a GP12 preamp and Peavey CS1000 power amp (yes, I know!) Only smidge of trouble ever was lack of strong output from the balanced DI on the back. Phoned TE.. 'Ah, that's because it's not balanced; you need this transformer and you solder it in here'. Done hundreds of gigs into any cab size from twin 4x10s down to single 1x10, PLENTY LOUD!!!!
16. Give them a ring 01228590591 or else drop Chris a PM on here.. they alsways seem happy to talk to us (within reason - they do have work to do). Sorry Chris if I've just inadvertently deluged your inbox by proxy!
17. Free bump for a tasty bass! I have the 35" fretless version; these are proper merde chaude!
18. Assuming these handles are the usual type of strap, they're bolted right through into a captive nut so you'd have to make a substantial hole in the side of the cab to accidentally remove one. Never known it happen meself. P'r'aps one either side for balance? Either that or carry your amp head in the other hand; certainly possible with the Compact.
19. I've got a Trace Elliot AH250SMX head, which has dual compression; I generally use a bit of the Low comp, and none of the High. As a standalone pedal, I have a Nobels CO-2 - budget but works really well for me. 20. I can't believe no-one has mentioned Alex's use of the word 'betweetered'! Good looking cab; my only experience of Barefaced so far is the Compact that did the rounds - marvellous thing which makes this all the more tempting. Just larger than anything I currently need to use. On the Chrimbo wishlist, even more so if an 8 Ohms version hits the shelves!
21. I just rang Stentor, and they currently only do a cello spike protector (just why the spike needs protecting beats me!) which retails at a mad 71 pence! I'm sure I got my first one from them, so I made it fit somehow - poss drilled the rubber out to fit! I'll keep looking, but in the meantime the walking stick/mic stand/etc rubbers will have to suffice.
22.
They always are if you're doing anything under a vehicle . . . . however 'good' the jack.
True, true, but I mean even just changing a wheel! I'm not really selling this, am I? Then again, that's why I got another and this one is in the Recycling section. Chances are that someone who knows hydraulic jacks will be able to fix it anyway, most likely a bit of muck in just the wrong place. In the mean time you just have to get the car up there and axle stand it to keep it high.
23.
MB1. ...Just when you thought it was safe!... to come out from under the car?
Yup.. to make it even more fun I have one of those Citroens with the hydraulic suspension.. deadly in the wrong hands.
