1. I've got one Trace head with a selection of different cabs depending on the gig. I also own a Trace BLX80 combo, which is far less portable than any of the combinations! Use that for demoing in the shop!
2. Sensible fellow! If I'd seen this earlier I'd have been quite agitated! I made my mind up about 4 or 5 years ago that, for me at least, Overwater just make the finest fretless basses.. finally got one this year. At that price a spare would be in the offing, even if I can't 'afford' it! Don't sell it unless you really must - IMHO you'd regret it.
3. MMhmmm! Shiny too.. nice one there, mon ami!
4. What have I missed here? p.s. I've played through the amp above. Tasty kit at a bargain price!
5. Why would anyone bother to put the tuners at the bottom and still put a head at the top?
6. late bump! This is still on the go, after some mild interest. I keep having a little play on it at home; just as nice as ever.. C'mon folks, embrace the fear!
7.
From here. S.P.
Thanks SP. I hadn't delved that far! And Alex for the online answer which was there once I got back rom the Technical page!
8. Out of interest Alex, what's the power handling of the speaker? Not mentioned on the page, but you recommend amp output of 100-500W. When I got my 250W Trace head, their instruction book recommended using cabs with a handling of double the RMS output of the amp to allow for transient attack. Seemed strange at the time as their standard cab was 200W 8ohms..
9.
I wonder how many people have been doing this. S.P.
Dash! Missed that bit.. sorry Alex.
10. Got the Northern Compact from Monz a couple of weeks ago. Instantly impressed a) Monz made a fair detour to drop it off and The Compact must be helium filled - it weighs nowt! Alex's 'one hand carry' claim is not bull! Had a small 70th birthday party gig the same night so got a faint tryout, but since the Trace was less than volume 1 and we were on a hollow framework stage the sound was hard to assess. Took it back to the shop and hung around after closing time so I could make some noise. MmmHmm! A-Bing with my EA CXL112, using Trace AH250SMX. I'm used to 10s and 12s, so I can find 'my sound' easily with such. Doing that then swapping the cable to the Compact changed the tone, naturally enough. My first reaction was to remember why I switched from 15s all those years ago. However, after a faint tweak of the EQ (actually taking it more towards flat) and a few more minutes, all the time trying different basses - Overwater Progress III fretless, OW Jazz 5, Aria Jazz DLX and Cruiser P-bass - I started really getting into it. Trying the two cabs together the bottom end disappeared, so I resoldered one of my speaker leads to reverse the phase - problem solved. Does that sound about right, Alex? On balance I'd say I prefer my existing smaller cab and speaker as a standalone to get my regular sound, but wouldn't struggle if I was offerd use of a rig with the Compact. If I was doing bigger gigs, space-wise, My existing setup with the addition of a Compact would be great! Also, as my crappy photo in the kitchen shows, the dimensions are perfect for an integrated look. Hmm.. maybe the wife will go for that one? Monz mentioned on handover that he felt the cab was vibrating such that you wouldn't want to put anything on top of it. Visions of our old washing machine with a trashed damper flashed across my mind! No such probs or me, even when I had the ceiling of the shop rattling! Must go and see Monz in action, methinks.. All this time, I had in my head a price tag of about £650, and having heard and carried the Compact I'd already decided that it was well worth the money. I've just looked on Alex's website http://www.barefacedbass.com/thecompact.html and realised the cab goes for £450 plus shipping.. BARGAIN ALERT! Anyway, I handed the Compact on to Rik(ESA) last Friday evening outside the Shama at Bingley http://www.shamabingley.co.uk/ which is another major recommendation from me if anyone is in the area. Then on to Tonybassplayer, I believe. Anyone else between W.Yorks and the Northeast? A massive vote of thanks to Alex for the trust and the use of the cab. I'm seriously tempted.. anyone want a bombproof 2x10?
11. Wow.. just read this end to end. I'm glad it seems to be sorting out ok. Remember we do seem to be something of a dependable community.. case in point is alexclaber of Barefaced fame: http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=53414 Nice bit of free advertising on his part, but he's never met or spoken to me before so I really do appreciate the trust he's shown there!
12.
Yep, it's difficult to see the bottom neck without leaning over.
Just close your eyes and pray! On the clamp issue, I made myself one on the Ibanez years ago.. occasional string centre slippage was overcome by a scloosh of superglue on the end after trimming the string(!)
13.
I occasionally play with a band where one member (a starvin' pro muso) takes Tupperware to take home some of the wedding food. She occasionally plays three gigs on a weekend and lives on buffet food for days
I was just thinking that I play with the same woman (concertina?), but you and I are a couple of hundred miles apart! Maybe our colleagues are sisters?
14. Here's my Ibby.. admittedly I had a more skilled party do the spraying! http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=44673 I'd say go for it! I did a couple of french polish re-fins a while back .. looked nice although nowt like a high gloss. Much easier though.
15.
Just to clarify (because I don't think it's been mentioned yet) - this is an import model, NOT a USA Hamer, yes?
Yup.. he's mad but not that mad! Total steal at the price.. very nice guitars!
16.
Free MIDI files are about as useful as free tabs, in that they have some passing resemblance to the song, but are only a starting point and not the definitive article. Paid for ones ought to be better but you'll still need to edit them to remove unwanted parts, change the key etc. Plus you'll still need sound sources to realise them with. They'll need to be good. Cheesy sounding backing tracks are horrible. Personally I'd just advertise for a keyboard player.
+2! Or else one of the guitarists could use one of the guitar synth systems. Two birds, one stone.

18. If you're confident enough with getting inside an amp then it's a basic job; this stuff http://www.themusicroom-online.co.uk/produ...roducts_id/2750 is worth a try. Make sure you've disconnected from the mains (!), get to the back of the pots and give them all a spray with Servisol. Magic juice for crackly pots and switches! Do the sockets at the same time then plug into each socket a few times. If you're not confident, better to find an amp repairer.
19.
Hi all - I have been selling Comfort Strapps for the past three years and as far as I am aware non have failed that I have supplied. There are a couple of copies available that seem to be inferior from what I have seen. The Comfort Strapp is a patented product and some of the copies infringe this copyright. If you have purchased a Comfort Strapp from Bass Direct that has failed please let me know as I will replace it - providing you return the strapp to me with proof of purchase from Bass Direct. The Mono straps are stiffer and the ends are more suited for strap locks IMO. M PS I have used my Comfort Strapp for 4 years and it has done hundreds of gigs and still looks like new!
Apologies there chap.. I'm going on a few comments on here, but on closer inspection they are talking about some of the copy versions. No mentions of hassle with the original Comfort Strapps. The only strap I ever had fail myself was a nylon webbing which was fixed to the leather end with 2 rivets. Built to fail, and it did just that half way through a dance. Not using that design ever again! I still personally rate the Overwater, especially as a sciatica sufferer, but I'm always open to suggestion or trials.. maybe we should start a strap loan thread so we can each try these things without the outlay for multiple new straps?
20.
I have succumbed to your marketing skills. I'll have it. It seems only right to go with the new OW bass.
I eventually got the bass to go with the strap!
21.
I used my Trace Elliot AH400SMX for the first time in ages last night (I normally use a Hartke Kickback 12 through the PA), the singer, who looks after the PA, complained that the signal coming from the DI out put on the rear of the amp was really weak compared to the Hartke. As a result he had to chan ge the settings on the desk so that they were a lot higher. Is there any particular reason for this, or is it just 2 different amps? What, if anything, could I do to increase the signal and not have to make the PA/desk work so hard? I'd forgotten had brilliant the compressor on the TE is and how great is sounds generally. Would it be worth investing in a separate DI box? Cheers JPS.
I have the AH250SMX and experienced the same after I'd had it a couple of years. Got in touch with Trace, who informed me the XLR on the back was actually not a balanced DI. Quite happily sold me a transformer with instructions.. problem solved and I still love the amp 16 years down the line. I suppose a DI would give the same effect.
22. Utter fool! Paypal's all nice and easy, but does rather take a slice off the top. I've never had such an answer when making such an offer; most sellers are far more realistic.
23. I use an Overwater strap, now about 6 years old, with an elastic section at the neck end. Rather like the Comfort Straps, but without the reputation for breaking! http://www.themusicroom-online.co.uk/produ...products_id/255 I think we're down to the last one.. hopefully OW will have more stock soon!
24.
I could do with one. I'll probably have one on my birthday - like I do most years.
When's your birthday? We can set it up in the back field for you.
