1. +1 for foam, also silicone sealant is great for these things!
 2.
Thankyou Hubard, Glad a fellow OW player could put a help in hand! She is great! And if people decide to come and play her they will know as well! Thank you, Floyd
Haha.. as I usually say when folks ask at gigs - 'imagine if Fender were building them right!' cue opening can of worms - 'the opinions stated here are purely those of the poster and in no way reflect those of the management'
 3.
Take the plunge! You'll love it! Dan
Excellent summing up, if I may say so.
 4. Hi, just to chip in my tupporth.. I have the fretless 5 of pretty much this spec (mine has Bart Js), and it really is one of the most amazing and versatile basses going! Anyone thinking of getting a F****r should try this first - and at this latest price it's a totally mad BARGAIN!!
 5. As a long-term fretless-only type, if you want to play rock on a FL you need to look at an ebony board and possibly active pups.. I prefer ash body as well, but that's me!
 6. Just to chip in.. I have the AH250SMX, which I bought new way back when.. also tank-like and never let me down once! Keep them both unless you really, really have to let one go!
 7. I've been using surgical spirit for a few years now; can't remember who advised me to do this, but it was a seasoned player at the time. Works well for me, with the added advantage of making the house smell kinda like a hospital!
 8.
And you're all wrong the best cheap strings I have ever used by a country mile and used all the time until I went to flats were Hartke ones. I picked up a 3 set pack for about £17 on Ebay. I still have a set left if I ever decide to get a second bass to keep. Now that's what I call Texas Style Rock and Roll, er I mean Cheap. (sorry i was at the wrong gig for a moment there) Those Alice ones are terrible. I still have a few sets knocking about. Cheap and very nasty.
Haha, I got some 5 string sets of those Ebay Hartkes.. EADG were fine, the low B of each set sounded like it was one of the new Lard-Wrapped Design!
 9.
I would really like the range of a 5 string bass but I don't like the look and I don't like the feel. I might still get one anyway if I can find one that looks and feels like a 4-string bass. Doubt that's going to happen. Plus I think I would miss having a low B on my double bass if I had one on a bass guitar, so I'd rather not have one at all and not know what I'm missing.
I was hooked on 5ers from the first time of playing one, long before they were common. Interestingly, I don't think I've ever missed the low B string when playing DB.
 10. I have an AI combo too, which makes for a great natural sound pretty much anywhere in the room except for your own position - the downward-firing speaker rather seems to spread the sound past your ankles, so folks at the back will get a great bass sound but you have no idea what you're playing! For louder applications I've found forward-firing cabs a bit better, but as has been noted you eventually reach a volume at which EUB or a fretless bass becomes the only way. Alternatively, EVERYBODY TURN DOWN!! and use a decent front PA speaker system for all the band.
 11.
Why not just change the whole set?
+1 Also, it might seem expensive buy if you are gigging you really should have a spare set handy.. this time you got 5 days to sort it out, next time you might not be so lucky!
 12.
He's now set up a YouTube channel with his mate called "Gentlemens bass club" where he gives lessons...I've been watching his videos for a while and didn't expect his voice to be so high ha!!!!
I looked at a couple of his other lessons.. not half bad, but as with all the other free lessons I've seen so far you have to remember these are his interpretation rather than an accurate transcription of the recorded basslines. Like I said, though, not half bad!
 13.
Immaculate condition. I'm after something a bit higher output, that will match up to the power of my other PJ Basses. Something like a Duncan SJB-2 or SJB-3 Set? Or WHY?
EMG-J? I have a spare set in the projects box, as you do!
 14.
Oooo.... No! No! NO!!!! Stop tempting me!!!! Quick someone else buy this, I've played it and it's really really good, and there's no nicer person on here to deal with than Phil (and that's saying something given how nice nearly EVERYONE is on here! ) Now if it was fretless.... And no, don't tell me to buy it and defret it!
Don't buy it and defret it! I was thinking of doing just that some time ago, and a conversation with Chris persuaded me otherwise.. went to Carlisle and commissioned the 35"fretless version of this. Never looked back! Sorry Phil! Edit for hijack apology!
 15. Free bump for a nice looking bass.. Am I the only one to see 'torte pickguard' and instantly think of pastry?
 16. Nemmind the neck.. Alex's facial expressions in the guitar breaks - almost like he just woke up and 'crumbs, there's alot of people in here'! Imagine LVS becoming second nature, proper classic rock. thanks for the link!
 17. SD compared to stock Mex pickups? Just YES!
 18.
Where possible I ring the shop and ask some obscure question that involves them having a look at the product, if they can't give me an answer then I start to suspect it's not in stock.
Why not just ask if it's in stock? Most shops, including my workplace, have neither the money nor the space to keep every available item in stock all the time. If it's not straight to hand and you need it, say, for a gig tomorrow then most shops I know will actually suggest the next place to try! On the payment side of things, I always assumed that, like us, most mail order places actually take your money when things are leaving the shop/warehouse.. seems not, then!
 19.
The fish tank would look funny - I'm going to bear that in mind (not with REAL fish though!).
A nice bit of haddock would keep for a couple of days in there! Seriously though, that looks like a beautiful Tele.. I'd go for natural or slightly stained down lacquer meself.
 20. By a strange coincidence, I had one of those wine/Youtube/ELO/acoustic guitar hours only last night!
 21.
I thought the SMX had a compressor this does not have the compressor it is earlier than that. I have used the DI over the last couple of years at outdoor festival gigs and big indoor gigs and never had a problem so it may be the mod was done before I got it or it mnay be that this model did not need a mod . I have had loads of trace stuff and all the later stuff have a chrome cage surrounding the cooling fan whereas the ealiest stuuf has the cooling fan in the chassis with just slits to let the air through. That is how this is. http://s639.photobucket.com/albums/uu114/J...=DSCF0013-1.jpg the fact is though its a good quality 250 watt head which I have used for numerous gigs without any issues for £200 skez
Yup, the SMX has a compressor, 12 band graphic and ss/valve pre-amp blendable. Interestingly no cooling fan, just big vanes on the back! I got the impression at the time that the SMX were the 'upper' models with those extra features in the pre, then the SM were the 'standard' pre into the same power section. Skezza, if I felt any need for a backup - my SMX has been played up and down the country and abroad for the best part of 20 years and still works without a glitch - I'd have yours like a shot at that price! I've used a selection of cabs for different gigs, but never felt underpowered with 250 Watts; mine usually runs at about volume 2 to 3. Best of luck with the sale!
 22. If it helps, I have the AH250SMX - the same generation (post Mk VI I believe) with a few more features. Not letting go of mine! The XLR out wasn't balanced originally - I bought it new in early 90s - but Trace sold me a transformer for a few quid and told me which place to solder it in; sorted! There is a place that still services TE amps in England.. they may well have the neccessary transformer if the job wasn't already done previously. 23.
I think there are three very important words that you and others haven't noticed. for business sellers Which I think means that we, the great unwashed, are unaffected.
Hah! Well spotted TZ.. 'Always read the whole page, not just the linked part'! Private sellers still FVF = 10% up to max £40. http://pages.ebay.co.uk/help/sell/fees.html#auction However, I'll be keeping my eye on the Updates - if they've upped one lot of fees I can't help but wonder when the rest will follow. I was amused to see the heading 'Get better value for money' above the business sellers fee changes. http://www2.ebay.com/aw/uk/201103.shtml#2011-03-16113011 If business sellers' fees go up, p'raps this means less folks coming into the shop giving me the 'I can get that cheaper on Ebay' line?
 24. Good headsup, ednaplate; I suspect more Evilbay rants in the writing! Selling price 600, FVF was 41.55, now 60 Selling price 1500, FVF was 55.05, now 150 A few pence for listing fees. Plus is it 4% if you take Paypal?!! Hats off to a great business model, I suppose..
 25. Even split after petrol. Either that or a long and possibly heated debate!
