1. All great advice, thanks! Think I'll try for the pins/felt tip approach. I will have a look at measuring against a genuine F body with neck plate location, but if the neck pocket in my replica body is slightly deeper then presumably this will cock that all up! Re: scale length, the bridge holes aren't drilled. That's another job I'll have to do once I've mounted the neck. Expect to see a separate thread on that!
2. Hi, Picked up a J body, in basswood. It's actually fairly decent, but they've completely lashed up drilling the neck holes in the body, to the point where it won't even accept a neck plate with all 4 screws (without trying to fit neck, just trying to get all 4 screws through the body!) Needless to say, it doesn't line up with the neck I'm planning to use. In fact none of the holes individually line up with any of the holes in the neck. Now, if the holes in the body had been fairly square, but they just didn't line up with the neck holes, I'd have filled the neck holes and re drilled the neck, but in this instance I'm going to have to redrill the body holes. I'm planning to dowel, glue and fill the holes before redrilling but my question is- will I need to also redrill the neck holes, or is there a way I can measure where the body holes need to be, so I can avoid this? The neck is genuine fender and all 4 holes are straight and true, but I can't figure out how to work out where the new holes in the body would need to be positioned to line up with them. Am I just going to have to do the neck as well? Thanks in advance
3. Any band is only as good as their rhythm section. Seriously. If Jeff Buckley's drummer had been sh1t no one would have batted an eyelid. And for the record- no ones listening!
4. Squier Silver Series P bass I bought from here in May. Had previously owned a Silver J bass, but the ceramic pickups made it difficult to use as they were so uneven in volume. Traded it on. Great player though so swore I'd get a P one day. The only things I can fault with this bass were the weak pickups (sorted now), the fact I'd prefer a 7.25 radius, and that the contours are a little bulky compared to the vintage deep ones I like. Other than that, it's light, incredibly well put together, and plays great. Oh and the bridge screws are a little long. I'd say these basses are easily worth the £300 they go for on eBay with no hesitation and having played MIJ and CIJ fenders, this is right up there.
5.

Awwww yeah!! Really works with the maple though. Not sure rosewood would be as good.
6. Good suggestions guys! There is a stack knob jazz in the Show is yer limelight thread that I love- in Orange! It's fantastic but it has a maple neck. I fear it wouldn't look as good with Rosewood. I can't post the pic here as BC won't allow it.

obbm's feedback

Bought a stack knob jazz set up off Dave, paid him and it turned up the next day. Also had a nice chat. Great bloke.
8.
Aged blonde and proper tort.
Yeow! That's nice. I can smell the nicotine seeping off that from here.
9. Those white plastic dots just scream pre-CBS...
10.
I've got an ocean turquoise/white pick guard/rosewood board model. It's a fender Japanese '62 reissue with chrome stack knobs. Very nice.
Pics!! Never heard of ocean turquoise!
11. Let's get this out of the way- I don't play Jazz basses. I'm a P player through and through. However, over a year ago I acquired a decent Jazz neck which I intended to use on a JV P bass on which I'd snapped the truss. Long story short, I fixed the truss, so the neck then became obsolete. Fast forward to now, and I have weirdly and suddenly developed jazz bass gas. Knowing I have this neck to use has led me on a mission to gather the rest of the parts needed to make a killer Jazz bass. I know I want it to be a stack knob (which thanks to obbm it will be), but I'm stuck on the colour. I've ruled out Fiesta Red and Sunburst, and I'm a big fan of the funky sixties colours like Daphne, Seafoam etc, but I'd like BC'ers options on the best stack knob/rosewood Jazz colour choices!! Post your faves please, so I can get this project started. Cheers!
12.
Getting your individual recordings to sound right in sequence is one of the main points of having the recordings mastered in the first place. What you need to do is get the original un-mastered mixes and supply them your mastering house of choice along with a running order.
Brilliant info, thanks.
13. Mastering to the tracks individually has been done, but I'm concerned there may be a slight difference in volume as three tracks were recorded at Cube studios in Cornwall, the other two at Sawmills. No problems when taking tracks on individual merit, but I'm thinking there may be a difference when listened to in sequence. Would re-mastering then solve this issue if there is one?
14.
For small runs (under 500) you are going to get CDRs and not properly manufactured glass-masterd CDs. This means that they won't have the same lifespan as a real CD. If you are OK with that I suggest that you get in contact with Disc Wizards who I have used in the past and been impressed with the speed and quality of their service.
That's interesting, never knew that. Can you recommend a place for orders above 500? We don't want or need that many CD's, but we'd like them to be half decent.
15. Hi, We have finished 5 songs for an upcoming EP, and now need to convert the finished mixes into a final product. Can basschatters recommend anywhere suitable to upload our WAV's and artwork and receive it all back in CD format? We are looking at an order of around 100. Cost is obviously a factor, but it doesn't need to be cheapest option available. We've gone cheap before and it didn't work out well. We'd prefer proper CD cases opposed to plastic wallets, and the quality of the printing and the paper they use for the inserts must be of decent quality. If they are astute enough to notice/adjust any obvious differences in volume this would be useful too, as the songs were recorded in two studios and mixed by two separate engineers. Thanks in advance, Will
16. So, are you selling the bodies separately again now? Or still only fully loaded? Sorry I'm confused!
17.
I'm not sure of the age of it, but it's a couple of years old, I believe it was a year or two before they stopped the S1 Switching System. So I think Possibly 2007/2008
The serial number will help you out here; Z (2000) + next digit = year of manufacture so Z8 = 2008. Lovely colour. I had a Candy Cola American Series P with the S1 system. Lovely instrument. GLWTS.
18. Ensure the bass is at the same height stood up as sat down. Also, take a look at how the bass balances on your leg when sat down. Do the cutaways change how the bass balances, i.e neck heavy when stood up but fine sat down or vice versa?
19.
The bass was previously owned by a famous bands bass player who used it live and for recording.
Spill the beans! You can't leave us hanging. Lovely bass, I have a real thing for daphne. I do prefer the white guard though. GLWTS.
20. No, but in 2010 I went to a flamenco club in Barcelona, which turned into a night club after 11pm. The house band only had Gary Willis playing bass didn't they! And bloody good they were too.
21. What are the weights for the J bodies? Very light, light, medium or heavy will do as a description.
22.
except they can't do regular finishes... only relics
Really? Why not? Surely it's less work.
23.
Sounds like a good deal to me... There has to be a market for custom coloured P and J designs and a reasonable price.
Limelight
