1.
Most ACG basses are 33", since this is a 35" bass, is there any neckdive?
I'm not sure that 'most' of Alan's basses are 33" scale. A number certainly are I agree. Neckdive in an ACG is either rare or I'd guess non existent Alan takes great care to ensure that's the case. Peter
2. OMG, I realise that I now have Fodera GAS Funny old thread.
3. About basses being made of MDF. Has anyone who thinks this this ever picked up a bass body sized bit of MDF and realised how much it weighs? Edited to add, just did some research, it's usually chambered it seems. Peter
4. Great bass, good price, simples
5.
Something is going very wrong when I am acting as the voice of reason and reconciliation.
I don't entirely agree with your assessment I'm afraid. If a thread goes 'pear shaped' it's not just because the moon is in the wrong phase or a particular bout of mean spiritedness has overcome BC. I've no problem with the OP posting about his purchase. I'm a great VW fan and I'd love a Fodera. If I sold a few basses I could indeed afford one so I've no gripe. I think they are stunning instruments. Every bass I own is a good un too. The OP's original thread has two main inconsistencies that have nothing to do with 'folks definite ideas about spending money' imo. People have commented on these inconsistencies and the OP has reacted quite negatively to these comments. I made my recommendation in my 1st reply and I stick by it as a reasonable response. I can only repeat: 'The meaning of your communication is the response you get'. Lovely bass, enjoy Peter
6. If you don't mind me saying JBF, you did kinda invite these comments. The time to worry about the dinks and open a thread was, imo, before you bought it. Your comments have left several of us wondering why you bought it. That can't just be all down to us surely? 'The meaning of your communication is the response you get' Peter
7. Bump for a great bass at a bargain price
8. So am I right? You saw a bass in the flesh that was a little more knocked about than you seem happy with and with a pickup configuration that you aren't so sure about and you paid £3,400 for it? It sounds to me like you REALLY wanted a Fodera If I were you I'd play it lots, experiment with the pre as Molan suggested and try to form a great relationship with it otherwise you will never be happy in my experience. Peter
9. Stunning.
10. 'Vintage basses sound better'? I always thought basses sounded like the amplified output of a string vibrating over a pickup. Oh well, you learn something every day
11. If you fancy a day out in the far NW seaside Promenade Music in Morecambe are well worth a bassists day.
12.
I may be wrong but I think the newer Rockbasses don't have a Warwick W on the headstock anyway
I think you may be correct.
13.
WD. complete indistinct mush.
Thanks. I suspect that WD sell nitro cellulose and parchment tort and even within those catagories there is variation. I suspect that SIMS don't actually make it and I wouldn't be surprised if their supplier was next door. I believe that nitro cellulose plates can no longer be air freighted. Making it more expensive and elusive in the UK? Peter
14. Great news. A happy ending
15.
...that reminds me - I have your white guard for it. PM me your address...
The Roscoe beck is in good hands Michael. Pm'd you. Peter
16.
I had a tort plate fitted a while back and WD and Sims are next door to each other. One did a plate for £20-30 and the other cost £70. There is a WORLD of difference between the 2 and you should see the plate in person as catalogues just don't show it... As good as one was, the other was digustingly awfully IMV.
?? So which one was awful?
17.
Here's a (very complicated!) tort guard the Doc created for my Rosoce Beck. It's light-years better than the super-sharp pepperoni you usually get.
I hate to quibble here WoT but isn't that my Roscoe Beck?
18. My 2014 has Grovers Matt
19. It looks nice. Is it a neck through Epiphone I wonder? Could be worth a go. Probably better than the modern 'real' thing?
20. Matt's influence is casting it's shadow here too. Here is my EB2014. I tried to pull the knobs off to take the pickguard film off and the pull switchable spindle came away. With the help of John (Kiogon) I fitted new electrics with 3 pull switchable pots. Now the pickups are switchable series/parallel as opposed to series/coil tap and there's a global parallel/series switch on the tone pot. The finish is a little 'grungy' and the bass is clearly made to be a little more affordable for a full US spec bass but I like it and it has real tonal authority. It does neck dive a little but a Comfort Strapp sorted that completely. I've done a clip that goes: Both pups parallel Both pups series Neck pup series Bridge pup series Both pups series and global series too. Tone max and D'Addario Chromes. Finally there a fender Jazz for a reference tone, Roscoe Beck, single coil, both pups tone max. https://soundcloud.com/peter-burridge-1/ebvsrbiv Peter
21.
I thought all tort was pretty much the same shows how much I know
Nope some is pure tort and other pure torture
22.
Me too.
And me
23.
Didn't have you down as a Harris fan Peter
Our drummer is the Iron Maiden nut and I've been listening to a bit. I really wanted a P bass with low mids innate. This seems to give it. I jury rigged the harness today and was mightily impressed. Peter
24. The Seymour Duncan SPB-4 Steve Harris sig pup might do the business fairly well methinks. I fitted one yesterday and played it straight to the jack as I don't have a scratch plate at the moment (it's away as a pattern for a tort replacement). It sounded quite 'low middy' which is exactly what I expected. It sounded rather nice too Peter
25.
They are fine as starter instruments and, yes, an upgrade on bridge and strings would be a good idea. Alternatives include Gedo Musik's basses which are similarly priced (I started on one priced at around £1400 but they are perfectly credible at lower prices). If you want to hear my cheap, nasty bass (irony, it's lovely), check out 'Calypso Zoom', 'Speak Now', 'Estate', 'Wee' or 'Caravan' on my Soundccloud page. There is a lot of what I call hysteria about cheap basses but, in my opinion, getting one looked at by a luthier and getting to the act of playing the damn thing will be more use to you than agonising over whether to spend £700 this year or wait another six months until you have £1500. The difference between the two will be irrelevant for a few years until you really get a handle on the instrument. My 'cheap' bass sounds four times better now than it did when I got it. Not because it has been modified but because I have been playing it for four years now and am much better than I was when I bought it! I cannot see how a marginally 'better' (i.e. different) bass would improve my 'thing' as convincingly. My advice in one sentence: Just start your journey and enjoy it.
Nice post.
