1. Lovely LP there, what does it balance like? Peter
2. Hmmm... Buy an ACG with an acrylicised (sp) fingerboard then you aren't limited to certain more stable woods and maple won't get quickly grubby. Tone differences? marginal at best in my opinion. Wenge is nice. Balsa anyone? How about this one though? Peter
3. I sold this pedal some months ago. It never arrived and I refunded the buyer. I walked into the local post office a few weeks ago and I was handed the pedal sans stamps. They claimed I left it but I know I paid postage. I mean why wouldn't I So it's up for grabs again. Bargain price of £75 posted to UK addresses. Condition as new and a great pedal. 4. Michael sent me the Roscoe Beck scratch plate that he still had, gratis. What a star
5. At the recent Moffat Bass Bash I was really keen to try one bass more than any other. The Mike Lull with the retro engineered 60's Thunderbird pickups. To be specific a Jeff Ament Sgnature model: I have to say, the construction and playability were everything I'd hoped for although I'd rather have these pups in a P or J body. I played the bass passively and listened to Matt playing it against his EB2014 and I'd have to say that in my opinion the EB2014 won the audio test. So that's GAS relief. Peter
6.
I thought I could use a bit of the odd morning sunshine
Lovely
7. I had an absolutely amazing weekend for many reasons, the Bass Bash being central to them all. Anita was really keen to come along and she had heard all about it well before the event. So for me it was a welcome weekend away in a town I've grown ever so fond of with a lady likewise. Well, she had a great time, I had a great time and we had a great time too I'd like to thank Alan, Lihnnie (I always get the spelling wrong I suspect) Dave, Shaun, Sandy and all old friends and new for a great time. I even emerged on Sunday without a hangover which with my lack of tolerance for alcohol was an absolute winner. Sadly with my band life being a pathetic series of failures the Basseokey seems to be my annual gig! So thanks for the opportunity to do two songs. Was it just me or did the ACG's all sound great with the band? I didn't take so many photo's this year but I'll put a couple up. Bass wise, highlights for me were probably my own ACG Finn which might seem a little unusual but believe me that IS a success It was the first time it's breathed in anger. I suspect that Anita and I will be back to Moffat this year on the bike as it's a great area for motorcycling. We did keep off the motorway in Scotland as it was and explored some nice detours. Here we go: Paul S playing my Finn whilst praying to Dave's Foundation 212 cab. 8.
Aha. A lovely looking bass No Peter, it's one of the following and despite the rep Mex's have, I love them. I've had 6 good Mex's now. Even though I love 'em I can still sell them on. That's because I'm fickle Oh, and the description is wrong, the nut width is 38mm jazz. 12. Excellent, bringing the EB for an electrics comparo Matt? Looking forward to it (as I've already said, at least twice)
13. Or even a P/J? Fender scratch plates courtesy of Howard 'The Bass Doc'. P with Badass II and Seymour Duncan SPB-4 Steve Harris pickup. J is a Roscoe Beck Finally found Fender satisfaction. 14. Super sustain AND fretless?
15. My better half is coming. There's usually a fair few fairer ones who enjoy the day
16. This bass thing? One minute I understand it and the next I'm flummoxed. In my head I have the perfect bass. It growls, it's articulate, it's smooth and bluesy, it's got attack and clarity and it's muddy and warm. It's functional, well made and finished and it looks kinda wonderful too. I love Rics. I've owned 4 including a Chris Squire and a Macca model. I've tried and I've not got on with them tonally or ergonomically. A part of me still wants one (what's that about?). I don't/can't play with a pick and maybe thats partly the problem. I love the look and the tone when others play them. The Yamaha BB2024MX that Chris traded with me is a superb bass. It's got Yamaha's wood treatments which really work in my opinion. The pickups are a marvel and as a P/J it really works. The only aesthetic thing I'm not keen on is the neck laminates running through the headstock but it's superbly well made and finished. It's all anyone 'should' want methinks. I recently bought a 70's re-issue P bass entirely because it sounded so good. On a whim I put a Steve Harris pickup in (and moved the Bare Knuckle 65 into my Tony Butler sig) and I have to say that for a pure P bass sound it's the best I've ever heard. It isn't very flexible though, just pure P bass goodness in extremis. For the nearest Ric tone my Gibson EB2014 in series/series/series mode is a good approximation but more ballsy. For growl my 90 Thumb NT takes some beating. For articulation and clarity plus great flexibility my ACG Finn Uber spec has it nailed. The Roscoe Beck IV I traded with Chris does so much and is playable in the extreme. But, in a band situation that I'm likely to be in the bass will likely be fairly irrelevant, especially to the punters. Most if not all of my 12 basses would cut it. So what's my point? What I'm trying to say is that one bass wouldn't keep me content for many reasons and the reasons I enjoy my basses has more to do with playing them sat at home as the mood takes me than in a 'real' gigging scenario. If I had to have just one bass to rule them all I'd really struggle. Peter
17.
Barring Paul's comfort issues, I can see no reason, ever, to replace a BBOT. There are no strings in existence that could conceivably make one bend or be in any way less rigid than, say, a BAII. Those are made from zinc alloy, massively less rigid than the standard steel bridge. Hence the need for a bigger block of it. Can see the point of string change slots though...
I hope you don't object to me saying, that from an engineering perspective you are missing the point. It's not about material A being more of less 'rigid' than material B. It's is about design, levers, stress and strain. A BadAss has a completely different design in respect of these considerations than a standard Fender style bridge. The standard Fender bridge was, like so many Fender design features, cheap and easy to make and make in volume. A Fender bridge works. I'm not disputing that. I'd say that a Fender bridge will absorb or alter more string vibration than for example a BadAss bridge. Whether you can hear the difference is another issue as is whether is sounds 'better' or not. Some body wood and neck wood types and constructions and neck/body connection differences will absorb differing amounts of the complex array of string vibrations and that may have a significant difference on tone but it's not just about 'bending a bridge'. Some folk believe changing nut material affects tone and I don't think bending is an issue there. Peter
18. Please stop this, I can't afford Ric GAS
19. I've been to a few. It's my thought thought that as long as you're respectful and careful it's okay to try an instrument. Ask if the owners there and chat about a lot of nonsense too
20. Not done a DJ5 but John's pre's are excellent and a solder less fit too. Top quality.
21. Again these questions are best answered by Alan in my opinion. He's a very friendly guy, give him a call. The waiting times will likely vary and he has some stock at the moment after the show. The Graft range are made by Alan and have a more limited range of options compared to his full custom models. Given that he will incorporate 'extra's' into his Graft models for a reasonable cost. But, speak to the man, not the customer Peter
22. I sold the pre from the bass I bought from Mike back to him, a pleasure Peter
23. Speak to Alan would be my suggestion. What are the electronics? Filter based? There may well be a mini pot inside. Peter
24. A less rigid fixing point for a string will likely absorb or attenuate some string vibration. That isn't necessarily a bad thing if that's the tone you like or are familiar with. A fretless absorbs string energy to a greater extent while the string vibrates against the board so changing a bridge in the hope of increasing sustain might be pointless. However a bridge that allows better intonation and string changes might be worthwhile. Peter
25. You don't say what amp you are using. Turning up the onboard EQ isn't the answer if it's just increasing signal strength you are after. The obvious leveller for different basses is the amp input gain. Use that to balance the input into the power amp and then use the onboard and outboard EQ to alter tone. That's what I'd do anyway and I have both passive and active basses and they are to me different not better or worserer Peter
