This is from The Bass Doc's value range. Superb again Howard, cheers boss. Excellent, bringing the EB for an electrics comparo Matt? Looking forward to it (as I've already said, at least twice)

After 8 years of searching....... (Yamaha 2024MX content)
GreeneKing replied to Beedster's topic in General Discussion
This bass thing? One minute I understand it and the next I'm flummoxed. In my head I have the perfect bass. It growls, it's articulate, it's smooth and bluesy, it's got attack and clarity and it's muddy and warm. It's functional, well made and finished and it looks kinda wonderful too. I love Rics. I've owned 4 including a Chris Squire and a Macca model. I've tried and I've not got on with them tonally or ergonomically. A part of me still wants one (what's that about?). I don't/can't play with a pick and maybe thats partly the problem. I love the look and the tone when others play them. The Yamaha BB2024MX that Chris traded with me is a superb bass. It's got Yamaha's wood treatments which really work in my opinion. The pickups are a marvel and as a P/J it really works. The only aesthetic thing I'm not keen on is the neck laminates running through the headstock but it's superbly well made and finished. It's all anyone 'should' want methinks. I recently bought a 70's re-issue P bass entirely because it sounded so good. On a whim I put a Steve Harris pickup in (and moved the Bare Knuckle 65 into my Tony Butler sig) and I have to say that for a pure P bass sound it's the best I've ever heard. It isn't very flexible though, just pure P bass goodness in extremis. For the nearest Ric tone my Gibson EB2014 in series/series/series mode is a good approximation but more ballsy. For growl my 90 Thumb NT takes some beating. For articulation and clarity plus great flexibility my ACG Finn Uber spec has it nailed. The Roscoe Beck IV I traded with Chris does so much and is playable in the extreme. But, in a band situation that I'm likely to be in the bass will likely be fairly irrelevant, especially to the punters. Most if not all of my 12 basses would cut it. So what's my point? What I'm trying to say is that one bass wouldn't keep me content for many reasons and the reasons I enjoy my basses has more to do with playing them sat at home as the mood takes me than in a 'real' gigging scenario. If I had to have just one bass to rule them all I'd really struggle. Peter -
Barring Paul's comfort issues, I can see no reason, ever, to replace a BBOT. There are no strings in existence that could conceivably make one bend or be in any way less rigid than, say, a BAII. Those are made from zinc alloy, massively less rigid than the standard steel bridge. Hence the need for a bigger block of it. Can see the point of string change slots though...
I hope you don't object to me saying, that from an engineering perspective you are missing the point. It's not about material A being more of less 'rigid' than material B. It's is about design, levers, stress and strain. A BadAss has a completely different design in respect of these considerations than a standard Fender style bridge. The standard Fender bridge was, like so many Fender design features, cheap and easy to make and make in volume. A Fender bridge works. I'm not disputing that. I'd say that a Fender bridge will absorb or alter more string vibration than for example a BadAss bridge. Whether you can hear the difference is another issue as is whether is sounds 'better' or not. Some body wood and neck wood types and constructions and neck/body connection differences will absorb differing amounts of the complex array of string vibrations and that may have a significant difference on tone but it's not just about 'bending a bridge'. Some folk believe changing nut material affects tone and I don't think bending is an issue there. Peter

Please stop this, I can't afford Ric GAS

I've been to a few. It's my thought thought that as long as you're respectful and careful it's okay to try an instrument. Ask if the owners there and chat about a lot of nonsense too

Not done a DJ5 but John's pre's are excellent and a solder less fit too. Top quality.

Again these questions are best answered by Alan in my opinion. He's a very friendly guy, give him a call. The waiting times will likely vary and he has some stock at the moment after the show. The Graft range are made by Alan and have a more limited range of options compared to his full custom models. Given that he will incorporate 'extra's' into his Graft models for a reasonable cost. But, speak to the man, not the customer Peter

I sold the pre from the bass I bought from Mike back to him, a pleasure Peter
-
Speak to Alan would be my suggestion. What are the electronics? Filter based? There may well be a mini pot inside. Peter

A less rigid fixing point for a string will likely absorb or attenuate some string vibration. That isn't necessarily a bad thing if that's the tone you like or are familiar with. A fretless absorbs string energy to a greater extent while the string vibrates against the board so changing a bridge in the hope of increasing sustain might be pointless. However a bridge that allows better intonation and string changes might be worthwhile. Peter

Active or Passive? That is the question!
GreeneKing replied to Grangur's topic in Repairs and Technical
You don't say what amp you are using. Turning up the onboard EQ isn't the answer if it's just increasing signal strength you are after. The obvious leveller for different basses is the amp input gain. Use that to balance the input into the power amp and then use the onboard and outboard EQ to alter tone. That's what I'd do anyway and I have both passive and active basses and they are to me different not better or worserer Peter -
Most ACG basses are 33", since this is a 35" bass, is there any neckdive?
I'm not sure that 'most' of Alan's basses are 33" scale. A number certainly are I agree. Neckdive in an ACG is either rare or I'd guess non existent Alan takes great care to ensure that's the case. Peter

OMG, I realise that I now have Fodera GAS Funny old thread.

About basses being made of MDF. Has anyone who thinks this this ever picked up a bass body sized bit of MDF and realised how much it weighs? Edited to add, just did some research, it's usually chambered it seems. Peter
Something is going very wrong when I am acting as the voice of reason and reconciliation.
I don't entirely agree with your assessment I'm afraid. If a thread goes 'pear shaped' it's not just because the moon is in the wrong phase or a particular bout of mean spiritedness has overcome BC. I've no problem with the OP posting about his purchase. I'm a great VW fan and I'd love a Fodera. If I sold a few basses I could indeed afford one so I've no gripe. I think they are stunning instruments. Every bass I own is a good un too. The OP's original thread has two main inconsistencies that have nothing to do with 'folks definite ideas about spending money' imo. People have commented on these inconsistencies and the OP has reacted quite negatively to these comments. I made my recommendation in my 1st reply and I stick by it as a reasonable response. I can only repeat: 'The meaning of your communication is the response you get'. Lovely bass, enjoy Peter

If you don't mind me saying JBF, you did kinda invite these comments. The time to worry about the dinks and open a thread was, imo, before you bought it. Your comments have left several of us wondering why you bought it. That can't just be all down to us surely? 'The meaning of your communication is the response you get' Peter

So am I right? You saw a bass in the flesh that was a little more knocked about than you seem happy with and with a pickup configuration that you aren't so sure about and you paid £3,400 for it? It sounds to me like you REALLY wanted a Fodera If I were you I'd play it lots, experiment with the pre as Molan suggested and try to form a great relationship with it otherwise you will never be happy in my experience.
