What do all these Preamps Actually Do?
Downunderwonder replied to Tokalo's topic in General Discussion
If you can't get a good sound after it goes through the diggity gizmo maybe you need to play about with the diggity gizmo some more. -
My fretless mysteriously broke a string so I had to play the whole show on DB. Some of the trombone players probably noticed but nobody said anything.

Sez you. Two of every bass? Get outta town!

This Trace Elliot ELF never ceases to amaze me!!!!
Downunderwonder replied to Mike Bungo's topic in Amps and Cabs
Suspect looking is the word. -
Less jazz improv in my world once I realized the name of the tune is usually in the chorus. So it goes like so: Next tune is... Blind panic. 1. Remember chorus. 2.3. Remember going back into to verse. 4. Go.

I may be missing feet. You wouldn't want my new cab to go around with no shoes would you?
-
So long as you don't raise them so high that the strings strike them you should be fine. It is going to sound more meaty but I figure that's what you want.
-
I have already collected everything to build a rehearsal cab aside from paint. I think I shall give myself a pass. Not buying any more ampy gadgets is the goal. Not buying any more basses should be no problem at all.

Nothing on my radar. In. Exceptions for anything DIY built?

Trace Elliot tuning port rings? (Or anything that'll fit!)
Downunderwonder replied to TRBboy's topic in Amps and Cabs
Your sketch is a good start but a little bit too basic. It appears identical to my 1518 port grill interface jobbies. The tube comes through the baffle from inside the cab. Last I measured it had a 4" internal diameter but OP can confirm. The inside is less important than the outside measure of the tube. The ring trim adds just a little to the port as it mostly sits around the port tube to provide a clean look to the grill. It needs to finish the last 1/8" of collar with the same ID as the tube and the remaining ID of the collar that is doing the grabbing of the tube has to be the same as the OD of the tube, or ever so slightly less for fitting and glueing.- 17 replies

Depending on how much you love your guitarist you have next year's Christmas present sorted.
-
Look at it this way. Plug it in. It's on and you know it it's working and the settings haven't been moved. One LESS thing to check = bonus.
-
If I pick up my bass and play loud right now my neighbours that have to work in the morning will be nervous I might keep it up. Best not.
-
I bet you walk into a room and have already forgotten why too. Don't ask me how I know.
-
Key info gap. OP said both gains were near max. Over to OP when/if he gets back. Low pickup is an easy fix at zero cost. Replacing the pickup not so much. A preamp pedal with a mess of gain would surely sort it for very little as long as there is no impedance mismatch in play. Afaik the Elf has a pretty high input impedance so not likely to be part of the problem.
-
Same. The reason I can't play the rest is probably only that I haven't had the enthusiasm for them. It's amazing what you can get under your fingers when you are really into it, and then it's no big deal.
-
Off the bench to remind everyone doubling power only gets 3dB more each time until the coil starts to heat up. Then the increased coil resistance reduces the efficiency. Shortly after that you will generally run out of excursion and make farty noise. OP seemed pretty clear that the amp and cabs worked well aside from the one bass. New rig is way down the list. OP needs to chime in on his outlaw bass setup check.

Highly reminiscent but not as I remember it, would definitely do the job if I could read it on the fly. It would depend on the drummer having it down similar enough and probably jamming it out the both.

The Japanese have a good saying about saké. The man drinks the 1st bottle, the 1st bottle drinks the 2nd bottle and the 3rd bottle drinks the man. -

Nice work. Captain Morgan has good taste in run down basses. -
Try bypassing the horn attenuation and all, ie input direct to the woofers. You may find there is enough top end albeit not very shiney. If you do go down the route of doubling up on cabs the 2nd one will have plenty of sparkle for both. In case you are still wondering, the attenuator turns down the amount of power going to the horn, by turning it into heat. Blasting the attenuator with distortion and attenuating it can cook the attenuator. Better to EQ it before sending to the power amp.

Best class D amp that’s uncoloured like HiFi
Downunderwonder replied to NickA's topic in Amps and Cabs
Quilter 800 is uncoloured at noon by design. Can also put on a dirt show.
