  1. We're Bass players Dave. I suspect nothing we do will impress anyone besides another bass player.
  2. It's 13 1/4 not counting the knobs. Add 3/4 of an inch front and back for the twiddly bits.
  3. Which is fair enough - I don't want a gig in a function band thank you very much BUT the OP asked what our bass showcase songs were " & also a song that shows what you can play on bass."
  4. To answer the OP's actual question (and not offer loads of undoubtedly 'good' advice), Mine would be Dune Tune.
  5. Doesn't Vantablack look a bit pasty compared with the latest offering from MIT?
  6. possibly not the response you want but when I had a PH212 I turned the horn down as I didn't like the harshness it added to the cab.
  7. A brief addendum to this. Over 40 odd years gigging, I've got used to punters coming over midsong, shouting requests in my ear - annoying as flip!. On this occasion a young (mid 20's probbaly) girl came over and stood quietly typing on her phone. 'Odd' I thought till she held it up in front of me - 'can you do Lucille, BKing?'. * Seems technology is even taking over in drunk punter territory. * We could, and did.
  8. Played the Central Bar in Leith last night. Great gig and a very enthusiastic audience but probably the smallest 'stage' I've ever been on. We had to set up in what's effectively a corridor alongside the bar. The bar itself is about a foot in front of my pedalboard in the pic..
  9. Glad you're still enjoying it Shaggy. I missed it so much I went and bought this one. Just can't justify having it lying around which is a shame cos it's easily the most versatile amp I've ever owned.

  11. See my post above. At least 35 years and still going strong.
  12. The OP was after Riffs though. Plodding single notes throughout the entire song doesn't shout 'RIFF' to me. Not a Bass per se but how about 7 nation army as a simple riff that takes up most of the song.
  13. The Animals. We Gotta get outa this place. Although it does move a bit for the chorus. (best cover is Blue Oyster Cult)
  14. My P is strung with a very old set of Superwound half-rounds. Exposed core over the bridge. Initially bought to avoid chewing up my fretless board I found them such a comfortable string to play I put a set on my precision too. Once a year or so I get it out of it's case and it's as bright and intune as it was when it was put away. Exclusively play DR black Beauty 5's now so if I was ever to pick up the P again I'd probably restring it with those.
  15. The thing I liked best about all the Manchester Bass days was how informal they were *. Every single 'name' was more than happy to hang about and chat to me and the mates I'd come down from scotland with. No huge egos to be seen anywhere. One or two of them have become very close friends who keep in touch regularly. It would be nice to reinstate something along those lines. * that, and Nigel Clutterbuck's incessant slapping of course
  16. When I was buying my powerhouse cabs around 2012, I tried a few combinations. 212 + 210, 115+210 and 410+210, Ended up going for the 212+210 combination as having the best sound for my needs.Quite punchy and fantastic lows. I found the 115 didn't give as much oomph/heft/je ne sais quoi as the 212 . However, I've since swapped out the 212 for a 410 as it is a better standalone cabinet at smaller venues. I play 5 strings with low B and the 212 and 410 both held up better than the 115. The 410 seems to handle effects a bit more convincingly than the 212.
  17. Newcastle, Glasgow and Edinburgh are easily a step up from London in terms of class and have as many options for culture and entertainment. (plus the 'locals' aren't londoners so are much more likely to smile and say hello).
  18. Enjoyed that so I'll dig a bit more. Here's the sort of playing wooten should stick to...
  19. frayed knot. I'll have a listen when i get home from work.
  20. For a more accessible Jaco, try to find his collaborations with Brian Melvin - jazz street and Nightfood are great albums of listenable jazz. I get the bass virtuoso comments though. I have about 2 feet of CD shelving taken up with bassists' 'solo' albums - jaco, marcus, wooten, clarke, lawson, entwhistle, Berlin, feraud, strandberg, hellborg, bona, nitti and so on. Very few of them have had a second playing and sit gathering dust because, for the most part, they're a boring as sin. However, stick any one of these players in a decent band and they invariably shine.
  21. there's photos on the web of him playing his 5 string so if he'd lived I believe he'd have embraced all the bassy things we take for granted. to the OP. if you don't like that kind of music you won't like Jaco's album. I won't hold that against you.
  22. Looking at that big black blob, 'cool' isn't the word that springs to mind.
  23. Now I'm in exactly the opposite camp. Love the Sons of Apollo and saw them twice in Scotland last year. Jeff Scott Soto has the kind of voice that james laBrie wishes he still had and Ron Thall's guitar playing is superb. Add them to my favourite drummer on his BIG kit and I'm in heaven. Winery dogs CDs are ok for a single listen but not much more than that for me I'm afraid.
