Big Tuna 2008

Tonight 10:45 - 1:45 PJ Molloys Dunfermline friday 18th 9pm on Bar Itza Kirkcaldy Friday 8th Feb - 9pm on Scruffy Murphy's Edinburgh Lots more coming up. See the website for details.
2.
Pardon my ignorance , but i heard alot of people mention scooping... Whats scooping??
Boost the lows and highs and cut the mids - gives the 'classic' smiley face on a graphic eq. personnally I don't find that tone very useful. Lots of people do.
3.
I bought a Kramer guitar from a small shop next to the Baccus from a bloke called Rob who taught me to play Midnight Rambler as part of the deal. That shop used to feature in Spender if IIRC.
That was Chris and Andys on High bridge. They were Overwater. Chris May still is. I took my old precision in there once to have the frets dressed (about 1980 I think). Talking to chris at bass day, he has fond memories of the old shop.
4. Veering away from the bollox being spouted regarding what should or shouldn't be performed, I've met nigel several times now, at bass days, at the guitar show and at Stanley's gig in camden last year and all those times he's come across as a really nice guy with a very good sense of humour which is (according to the book) why David gilmour chose guy Pratt to be his bass player. back to the slightly off topic bollox, i can't play anywhere near as well as nigel and like most on this forum I wish i could. However, this style doesn't fit in with the music I play. I bet you anything that nigel wouldn't play like this in a covers band either.

Must haves

Take a look at the EBS site http://www.ebs.bass.se/2007/pedals.htm they have sound clips for all the pedals they produce so you can get a good idea of what pedal makes what sound. They include clips of linked pedals too. For what it's worth i have an Aphex big bottom and EBS multi drive and chorus pedals. i'm thinking I might need an envelope filter too but that'll have to wait.
6. I don't slap much in our set but when I do I add in a little chorus. Gives it a bit of zing.

Shameless self promotion... behind the Wall, falkirk, Thursday 27th dec 10 pm
8. Probably my fretless rogue as that's the one I had custom built with lots of communication going on with the good folks at Alembic. Mind you the MK was a way more expensive. Choices! maybe i'd just put the fire out
9. The gallery is a good idea. They even have A few Alembics around your price range. A good condition Epic or Orion would be a nice buy.
10. guitar guitar have just started selling EBS. The nearest to manchester is Newcastle although Glasgow is probably quicker to get to.

Quick bump - Glasgow Walkabout tonight from 10 pm Behind the Wall Falkirk. Thursday 27th Dec.
13. They have them in stock in scayles music, edinburgh
14. Steve Swallow - 67 Chuck Rainey - can't find out Carol Kaye - 72 (and has been slipping into her dotage for many years judging by some of her comments) Tony Levin - 61 Marcus Miller - 48 ( akid compared to the rest) Stanley Clarke - 56 Bootsy Collins - 56
15.
...- and I'll leave the cab behind if I can borrow one.
You won't be popular if you do that. see http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=9654
16.
This is a pretty good article on slipping pegs: http://theorbo.com/Theorbo/Pegs.htm I put one turn winding the "wrong" way, then double back on the winding so that the final string tension tends to pull the peg IN to the hole, as suggested in this article.
The post is talking about tuning pegs of the violin / cello variety. The OP is on about the tailpiece pegs on acoustic (guitar shaped) basses that hold the ball end in place.
17. If I'm understanding the problem correctly, you could try reaching through the soundhole to bend the ball end a bit then pull the string tight while pushing the peg in at the same time. Then fasten the strings at the peghead end and tune up. Keep a thumb pressing the peg in while you tune. I find this works when I change the strings on my kelly dragonfly, even with the B string.
18.
go here and you should find all you need to know about the age. There was a dating resource I found that allows you to type in the serial number, but i think the database it looks at is just the same as the fender site. In theory the pickguards should be the same across the range, but there's only one way to find out.
Interesting link. Last time I looked my US precision up on Fenders site it claimed '79 as the build year. - the serial is S8 then 5 digits. Now the site says either '77 or '78.
19. 2 basses in VERY hard cases. 1 fretted 1 fretless (both fivers) tuner, pre and power amps in a 6 slot rack. 410 cab 212 cab pedal board in carry case with all leads I need for the show. another bag for stands, spare leads, spare strings, spare valve, toolkit, gaff tape, towel etc. To the original poster, i think it's vital to carry enough to cover every eventuallity. We don't play multi-band gigs that often so borrowing kit isn't usually an optio.
20. It's his bass, Why should you care what he does to it? p.s. there's no such thing as a good stingray anyway so what does it matter?
21. Seeing yes in '74 was what made me want to be a bass player more than anything else (yes, even being a clarinetist) and I think the first real bassline I ever learnt was the 'solo' section in yours is no Disgrace.
22. Anyone mention Roger Waters yet? There's alot of tasteful playing in Pink Floyd's music.
