1.
i totally agree I have a 5 string Alembic signature series and playing through several ashdowns I struggled to make it sound anywhere near as good as it can (its an awesome instrument) I think they are totally overated Jake
Snap. The house rig in whistlebinkies in Edinburgh is Ashdown and I've never heard it sound decent.
  2.
i have a 6 string bass , its hard to slap because there is no gap to slap ive heard alembic , music man and warwick are good , any suggestions?
Seeing as you've mentioned Alembic I'm going to assume you can afford one If you have one custom built, they'll give you any string spacing you ask for. If you're buying 2nd hand, try to get their 'comfort spacing'. it's a bit wider at the bridge and a bit narrower at the nut than the standard spacing and makes slapping very easy. I have no problems on my 5s and can switch to my mates 6 string europa pretty easily. interestingly (or maybe not) this isn't the same spacing as mark King has on his alembics - his are wider at the nut and narrower at the bridge.
  3.
Not true. The folk stuff is there when you walk in. Have you been in the basement? That's where it all happens, man. It sells lots and lots all sorts, from obscure to chart stuff, and is cheaper than most. GREAT selection of DVDs, too.
I know. My reply was tongue in cheek.
  4. Last time I went looking at gear in Newcastle, we used to hang out at rock city. this moved to moseley street and I belive it's now a sound control. we also used to go to Chris and andy's on High bridge but they split and chris now runs Overwater from carlisle. windows is only good for finding obscure folk CDs. Coincidentally I'm visiting the folks this coming week so I might have a wander round the guitar shops myself.

  6.
I agree, the amount of bands I have seen that do originals are 99% of time, dull as dishwater. Listen to the legions of 'no tune' wonders on myspace working under the illusion they are the next big thing. I'm afraid i'd much rather listen to some one doing a balls out led zep or lizzy song then some dirge.
I'm having more fun and getting far more gigs doing covers than I ever did in originals bands. (apart from the original wessex chucklecopters which was just a laugh a minute anyway)
  7. Despite amp and/or cable problems and delayed flights, Linley played a storming set at bass day 2005. I'd be mightily impressed if he was invited back again. Always been a weather report fan so I was pretty upset to hear about Zawinul's passing. The programme was a repeat but watched anyway - I'd have loved to have seen the syndicate play.
  8.
Brand X are worth a listen for some more challenging fretless - particularly the Product and Unorthodox Behaviour albums.
Good call. I'd recommend having a go at 'April' from the product album. Level 42's 'Dune Tune' is a good fretless work out. takes a bit more effort than doing it on fretted. The slapped finale sounds really cool on fretless. i tend to switch to fretless on most of the softer rock numbers in our set such as.... You stole the sun - manics dakota - stereophonics gravity - embrace, but it it also works well for harder numbers like Vertigo or 7 nation army with a bit of attack switched in.
  9.
has anyone said Mickey Madden?
So underrated I've never heard of him. Who does he play for?
  10.
(puts tin hat on) I personally think the Who were overated....don't get me wrong...I love the singles...."Won't get fooled again", "Who are you?" , "My Generation", "I can see for miles" are all amazing tracks. It's just that beyond the singles I can't find much to float my boat i'm afraid. Still they were still better than The Beatles (ducks for cover)
This could be construed as a suicide attempt so you'd better steer clear of the cops for a while.
  11. I have labella deep talkin' flats on my kelly dragonfly and they sound superb. very warm with a good (almost upright sounding) thud.
  12.
He got his first Alembic basse but not that model at about 1974 n started getting explorer shaped ones between 75-76 i think
With an Epic and a rick turner, you'd be made very welcome on the alembic forum. 13. No-one should ever try to cover any of the chili peppers numbers. It just doesn't work. I've also never heard a decent cover of Sweet Home Alabama.
  14. You're putting on a show. Be a showman, that's what it's all about. if the judges really are professional, they won't care how many strings you're using, they just want to be entertained.
  15.
Adam Duce, Jon Miller, Jeanne Sagan, Paul Pomanko, William Murderface, Chris Wolstenholme... they get my vote.
Wolstenholme is good but he's hardly 'underrated'.

    Which Wah?
I wouldn't recommend Behringer in a thread where the OP wants something reliable
Or that works in the first place To the OP, the EBS wah one covers most of your requirements http://www.ebs.bass.se/2007/wahone.htm I didn't like the Morley pedal at all.
  17. Jimmy Johnson when he's playing with james taylor - there's usually alot going on - couple of guitars, keys, drums, percussion, horns and god knows how many backing vocals. Phil Lesh - grateful dead, 2 guitars, 2 drummers keys and vocals and h still manages to make his pesence felt.

  19. If you have the money and don't mind waiting a few months, Alembic will custom build any neck dimensions and string spacings you ask for.
  20. Back on topic, I have Labella deep talking flats on my kelly dragonfly for a nice near-upright sound. However, on the fretless alembic I'm using DR red devil roundwounds to get that nice Mwah sound. Avoid Rotosound jazz flats at all costs. I tried them and found them to be rougher than barbed wire.
  21.
"You shouldnt be doing that" (From another Bassist in a pub,I was moving about onstage....getting the crowd into it)
I just received an email from european bassday adertising the world championship Air Bass contest! Imagine if you have to mime to a pino palladino bassline.... how dull would that be?
  22.
Grammy award winning bassist Marcus Miller has just announced 2 gigs at London's Jazz Cafe, Monday 5th and Tusday 6th November 2007 Don't miss it
Bugger me! I'm in london on the monday for a meeting. Wonder if I can swing a night's accomodation.

  24.
Another Edinburgh player here - just out of interest, what's it like playing in Walkabout? My covers band gig around Edinburgh here and there and someone mentioned there as a venue, is it any good? Sorry for the thread hijack...!
It's a good gig usually. Pretty full till about 11:45 when all the ladies head off to the night clubs. They have a reasonable PA and we've always had a very good sound guy/gal. The pay's not bad but you need to go throug an agent - the manager will point you in the right direction.
  25. At this year's European Bass Day they're holding the World Championship Air Bass competition. Surely a good idea for Manchester...... Who can stand still looking bored the best
