Bass Direct. I'm not a very complicated person; and besides, they have everything I'd want if I was intent on blowing £20K on basses. Esh, Dingwall, Mayones... what more could I ask for!

Have you built and finished a bass before? My feeling at the minute about building basses is that it's something fun and satisfying to do; but if you really want a quality bass then grab your wallet and go shopping.

According to my transcription - aside from a few octaves here and there, you're basically right. He phoned this one in.

Managed to shoot a couple of coats of primer on yesterday (Homebase's finest). Went fine but the matte grey revealed one or two small contouring irregularities, and a couple of odd spots. No problem. Little bit more wood filler in places and I expected to be sanding these these coats and applying more anyway.

I used to play on the DR black coated strings - and I really liked them. The only reason I'm not still using them is because I've pretty much switched to flatwounds full-time.

Alex sold his body to me and the whole thing was a pleasure. Oh wait, I've said that all wrong... Bought a jazz body from Alex and found him a really nice chap to deal with. Cheers mate!

Any name or link for the neck plate? I'd love to get one made for my Peavey project. Nice work on the bass too!

I don't tend to do it so much when transcribing - but certainly if I need to write something in an unfamiliar style then I'll load myPod with suitable tracks and have it playing in the background for a few days while I absorb the feel (or try to, I should say). The only time it doesn't work is when that "something else" is playing Iron Maiden. Weird.

Real men need nothing but sandpaper... and a lot of time on their hands.

I'm getting really paranoid about this now. To the point of testing all my other gear... Anyway, upon further investigation, it appears the earth wire was originally secured to the metal around the power transformer. Ran a few continuity checks and the ground side of the input jacks also goes there. I've reconnected the wire and all *seems* well. Plugging in a cable now shows that the ground bit of the jack is connected all the way through to the earth prong on the mains plug. Which is the same as on my Warwick Pro Fet. Noticed nothing different when I turned it on with a bass plugged in (and still not dead) but the whole thing has unnerved me.

Just thinking about this some more... the inputs on the amp should be grounded to a metal part of the case, right? And shouldn't the earth wire from the mains socket also be connected to this metal?

Quick question for you: I've just repaired some minor damage to an old combo with the intention of passing it on. The recipient may well be reading this and is probably going to get a bit worried. I've noticed that the earth wire from the mains plug isn't actually connected anywhere. It's just lolling around free as a bird. That doesn't seem right to me, but I'm not sure. I have actually played through the amp and didn't die - but should I go in and connect this to something?

Not much to add, except to support what's already been said in a way. The more different styles of music I try, the more I keep looking towards getting a Fender P. They just work. Always. Not my favourites, but they never look out of place and always sound fine regardless of what everyone else is playing. There's a lot to be said for that.
