Thinking of forming a covers band - Advice needed
Eight replied to BigBeefChief's topic in General Discussion
Cheers mate.
Second point first.... to use copyright material you have to ask the permission of the copyright holder. They might say - yes, go ahead. They might say, give us ten grand.
So you ask them directly then? There's not like PRS/MCSP type agency for this stuff?
There's a very limited demand for loud rocky bands. I imagine that playing metal will be even worse. I can only think of two venues in Glasgow but it's not my thing to be fair. What all the pubs want is cheese - Summer of 69, Mustang Sally etc. If you don't play that stuff then you're not going to be out every weekend.
Granted yeah. I wouldn't be thinking that this band would ever gig that regularly or earn jack. If it came to it, it would just be trying to get the occasional thing at the establishments that do like metal and now and then put cover bands on. I'd be hoping to pick up people like me - who are really just in it for a bit of experience. -
It's a long thread but there's a chunk on the non playing stuff you have to do if you form a band. have a read through from the start.
Yeah, I definitely saw some great advice on these pages. But then it kind of spiraled off into realms I wouldn't dream of touching (like the functions side etc.) I'm just trying to work out the best way forward for me. After soul-searching and deciding that I must play with others soon, I'm perhaps stuck at either joining a load of kids playing music I don't like or if I'm lucky, begging real musicians to let me tag along while I learn. The alternatives seem to be: move to another area or take the bull by the nostrils and try and form the necessary band myself -
Thinking of forming a covers band - Advice needed

I remembered this thread the other day it got me thinking. I had promised myself that when I sorted the amp/cab situation out that I'd join a band. My teacher also gave me some encouragement to do it. That situation is drawing closer rapidly... But I just don't see much (if anything) in the area that interests me; so have started wondering whether I should stick my neck out and try and form a semi-themed metal covers band? In theory, and assuming anyone wanted to join, that'd mean I could be playing music I like with people of a level and age etc. that's comfortable for me. But a comment earlier in this thread gives me some worries - along the lines of if I form the band then they're going to expect me to know what I'm doing on a management side. I think the idea would be to try and find people who mainly want to rehearse and play this stuff - maybe with the goal of playing a few pub/club gigs for the experience. Definitely not this corporate and wedding stuff. Any comments or advice? I know organising this would be asking a lot of myself since I've never played in a band before let alone tried to start one. BTW Apparently PRS is paid by the venue right? But I was wondering what (if anything) could be done if we wanted to put audio/video recordings of us playing the covers on a web site? How do you file stuff like that? You must have to pay but can anyone point me in the right direction of how you could go about it? Edit: And I'm not thinking that gigging or distributing records in any form would be a certainty; just trying to fill in the blanks of things I might be expected to know. -
Doesn't hurt to make an offer if you're polite about it. Worst they can say is no thanks.
afaik metal shielding offers almost no protection against magnetic fields of the frequency that will be produced by a bass cab, unless you're using a special material like permalloy...
I'm moving my sh*t in case you're right...
Yeah its a Basschat one I was thinking of for £500 delivered, or GAK for the new one at £600 delivered.
Sorry, I didn't read your original post properly there. To be honest, I'd trust just about anyone here on BC a lot more than I trust GAK. They probably haven't actually got it in stock anyway.

Warranties etc. are nice... but on the other hand, I'm sure you could find a use for that £100. Edit: Thinking about it, I don't like making big purchases on eBay anymore so for such a low % off the new price I wouldn't go for it. If it was a BassChat sale then I'd definitely vote for used.

Looked like four to me, but I'll take your word for it Kongo - I'm not going to watch both shows again to try and fit the clip.

My Vampyre SN4. Not a great photo - light levels are horrible today. Would love a semi-hollow Infinity at some point.
spot on!
Excellent - I'm on my way then.
Also an early shredder too. Some of his lines were stupid fast, and he'd use 3 fingers too...
I'm sure I saw in one clip he was playing with four. Stood there rock solid (almost like he was asleep) but with all the plucking fingers going and a left hand leaving scorch marks across the fretboard.

According to another thread... When your hair falls out, and your facial hair grows at an alarming rate.

Yeah I enjoyed that bit too. There's another thread knocking around at the minute, about whether the guys pushing the boundaries of bass are wasting their time if normal bass players can't incorporate that stuff into their playing in the real world. Maybe it takes an attitude like Ox to stand up say to a band "F'off this is how I'm going to play the bass"... Although aside from Daltrey not being able to hear himself, The Who seemed to understand that a loud, prominent, dynamic bass line was part of their sound.
Watched an Ox's Tale last night. Very good indeed. One thing that was glaring though was the abscence of any input from Roger Daltrey. Wonder what that was all about?
Maybe he was off making Vampirella at that point? But good call - I didn't notice that.
I've heard of one bass (a Cort Curbow) where the neck would bow drastically with changes in humidity - I guess the wood expands/contracts and the ebanol doesn't, but that's only one bass.
If that's true - then surely it would apply to all guitars with wood+ebanol neck combinations?
...but probably the reality of buying an inexpensive instrument made in the far-east these days.
That's probably true. However, I love my Cort and so it does feel a little sh*t to know my cheap enjoyment comes from the hardship of others. I do feel a little bad for the workers if things are as tough as being made out.
I've Sky-plussed this so I'll watch this over the weekend. Was the documentary about the Who any good that was on afterwards?
The Kids Are Alright - as a documentary it's terrible. But as a collection of concert footage etc. it's amazing. Beyond the music, I didn't know much about John or what kind of guy he was. I think I would have liked him.

It's weird how this thread turned about half way through. From the later posts, it doesn't sound like things were quite what you were hoping for - so nothing to be sad about. Let's face it - you were too good for them anyway.
GAK gave me a refund for Out of Stock items the next day 3 times...
Should be sodding illegal to sell things you don't have in stock without advising people before taking their money. Never known any other industry have this acceptance for it, but all music stores seem to think it's ok to promise quick delivery, take your money and then say it'll be a week or something before they get it in stock. Defeats the object of online shopping if you have to ring up and speak to them to make sure they actually have an item you can buy. AAAARRRGGGGHHHH
With regard to muting the bass part, sometimes it is interesting to listen to what 'another bass player' would do with that piece of music.
Oh I can see that. I just need to worry more about what I would do with it at the minute.
I'm guessing everyone's bored rigid now!
You had me at crime scene examiner.

Can't help you with increasing the number of low Bs unfortunately. I don't rate BiB that much to be honest - except as a tool for me to practice improvising with. At that, it is absolutely wonderful. I fire it up, punch in a chord sequence, pick a style, turn off the bass track, and I have something ideal for improvising over. And I can try new chord progressions, styles etc. with a couple of clicks.

Ebanol is the future. Ok maybe not - but to be honest, I love the way it feels as a playing surface. (The Curbow in my sig has an ebanol fretboard). It looks so purdy when polished (lovely "mirror" effect) and has a great touch to it. If all things were equal, I would choose an ebanol fingerboard on a custom. Some people have said that it gives quite a punchy sound compared to other materials - and whilst I don't know enough to back that up, I will say that the Cort Curbow is incredibly punchy (perhaps too much for my tastes).
