Bass tone

    I don't bother.
  2. The Curbow is standard tuning with standard gauge strings. Don't know what brand as I've never changed them. The Vampyre is tuned to standard C, with the low four strings from 5-string bass set of Warwick Red Labels. Eb - 60 Bb - 80 F - 100 C - 130 Edit: Through the bridge on both basses.
  3. You know, that never actually occurred to me when I moved in here and sat my amps right next to my computer. I would think the interior metal casing and case surrounding the hard drive would offer enough protection.
  4. Um... I'm not sure. Can check when I reboot though. One question - as a bassist, wouldn't you want to turn the bass track off and play your own?
  5. Plenty of "human feel" there. Edit: I can't quite find the words to accurately explain in more depth - but I'm sure a more knowledgeable BCer can step up to fill in the gaps.
  6. Would the hair come off with a dog brush or one of those shirt defurrer thingies?
  7.
I don't think it should be incumbent on us all to start every topic from the bottom up to include and cater for the newbies,
Exactly. But I think I got a little bit of the wrong end of Major-Minor's stick when I commented along those lines. Edit: probably should rephrase that. As in, I'm not sure he was exactly saying what I thought he was saying when I said what I said.
  8. I don't see a big problem with chord names - but I've never taught or really dealt with theory outside of my own interest, so my point of view might be different. It generally makes sense to me - and when it doesn't I read more theory and come back to it later. Diminished sevenths ok to me. But if I had to explain it to someone then maybe I'd see more where you're coming from there.
but when I do, I try to make sure my students don't go away with misunderstandings re the more complex chord symbols.
Ah I wish you'd taught me all those years ago - instead I had to unpick all the misinformation my teacher imparted.
  9.
I'm intrigued by your comments and wonder whether you would give us a more detailed viewpoint. Your first sentence is stating the obvious - the second leaves me wondering what you are trying to say !
Well... you were suggesting that some of the terminology and concepts relating to music theory (I think chord construction was your example) was maybe a little confusing or inaccessible to newbies? Finding an isolated internet forum post about a concept that is far more advanced than what you've managed to learn so far is always going to be confusing. It'd be like me talking about programming with recursive functions before you've even learned what a function is. To an extent I can try and explain but then instead of a post about recursive functions I have to explain a much wider concept and you'd have to take in a lot more information in one go. Chord names aren't always self-explanatory, but they're not too bad if you've previously covered the material you need to make sense of them. I don't mean this in any kind of way to exclude newbs (hell, I still have lots to catch up on myself) - just that if a concept isn't clear then at times it would be better to recommend they go back to more fundamental information first. Oh and of course the 'you' in most of this message is referring to a general you - not you specifically. Since at a guess I'd say you know a lot more about theory than I do anyway.
  10.
P.S. I can read but only like fiction stuff really..
Ok I'm calling shenanigans on this post. Too funny.
  11.
But if the girl is playing the bass who's doing the washing up?
Hahahahaha. That's going in the Basschat quotes thread - if I can remember where it is.
  12.
When we talk on this forum about the modern way of writing chord sequences, we should be aware that for the newbie, some of the terms used are confusing (indeed they ARE confused), and to the young enquiring mind, this can be most disheartening.
Granted. But learning music theory is much easier if you start at chapter one and work your way from there. Not by jumping around topics and trying to pick up concepts you haven't done the ground work for.
  13. I'm just not sure how useful those statistics are in examining this issue. Taking up an instrument in school is rarely a free choice from what I've seen or heard about. E.g. I remember once asking about playing the oboe (no idea why, I was young) and was told they didn't have any more oboes but could play violin if I wanted. So if this study was done back then, I would have been in the wrong stat for a reason completely irrelevant to my gender.
  14.
oh and speaking of "ikea hacking" sick of trying to attach wall mounts to the bloody wall(!) and i had a few chipboard screws left over from the desk build so...
That's pure genius right there. And perfect for those of us who rent and can't be drilling loads of holes.
  15. What about O I play bass guitar but own a double bass
  16.
It's because of his amazing beard and pipe combo!
It is? Right... I'm off pipe shopping (I already have a bit of a beard thing going on).
  17. Maybe mention it to the students themselves? Nothing heavy just a quick "Hey, you seem to like playing this and you could probably be really good. A dedicated bass teacher could probably really improve your playing"?
  18.
I'll probably give the lessons a go when I know the notes and scales.
It usually happens the other way round you know.
  19. Different end of the spectrum probably but "Everybody Needs Somebody" drives me insane sometimes. I can play it note for note (and backwards if I want to), but can't figure out why Dunn's version sounds so much better than mine. The only answer I've come up with is - he's Donald "Duck" Dunn... and I'm not.
  20. Hmm... doesn't bode well when your agent can't get their *own* email address right.
  21.
I've done literally pants all at work for two days due to not being able to concentrate at all
Same. Unless one of my bosses is reading this...
  22. That's near enough getting a gig to me. Congratulations have been earned so far, and you'll silence any lingering doubts next time you all hook up.
  23. Come on - you're holding up my (much needed) practice here.
  24.
bad omen?
Hahahahahahahahah. Cracking little pun that one.
  25.
I smell someone who's got a gig
No, that's me. I'm sweating with nerves.
