Why hang around?
If I'm honest with myself... fear. Not of not getting the gig, if someone were to say "thanks, but you're not good enough" I'd be more than cool with that. I guess fear of getting it and not being able to cut the mustard. But there's a part of me saying "Yeah, well how long do you plan to practice/learn before trying to get in a band? Another six months? A year? Will you ever really do it or are you all talk?" However... I am not flush at the moment (who is). I should think about the amp situation more.

Cheers S1mon. Much appreciated. Just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing the bigger picture when practicing this.

Anybody? Dust. Anybody? No? Dust. Anybody? No? Dust. Anybody? No? Dust. Anybody? No? Dust. Anybody? No?

Hmm... this might be plausible then. Half of me was really hoping to find something here which would let me off the hook. I'm not too bad on fretboard knowledge, know my scales and basic arpeggio shapes pretty well and can generally thump out crotchets and quavers, semis etc. in good time when playing along to metronomes, basic drum tracks etc. in my dining room. Would need to get my amp situation sorted though.
Its equally likely that they refer to these by fret number though.
You think they might not know the notes? Amateurs!

Cutting the bass out might be hard - I'd imagine you'll lose things like the kick drum etc. as well. Can you and your mates not get together to record your own bassless version?
I joined my first band before I could play.
Lol. That's an interesting concept.

A short while ago something weird happened - for the first time in my (reasonably long) life I started thinking that it might be fun to join a band. So I've kept an eye out on the local ads etc. Nothing ever took my interest. Until now. But that's got me wondering... I've only been playing bass for six months... am I being ridiculous? Now I'm not saying they'd want me - so it's not so much about this band. But I have no idea what level my playing should be at to even consider such a thing. Any kind of checklist items you can think of that I should be able to do before this is a possibility? (BTW It's an alternative punk/hardcore band - not music I'm hugely into but it's not a million miles away. And any band I considered in the future would be either punk or metal.)
All I'm saying is that my sig is never the same and therefore it is feasible that Hans-Peter Wilfer suffers the same unfortunate affliction, hence it is inconclusive to judge it solely upon that.
Not a clue on the bass situation there - since I doubt he signs every bass manually. Noones signature is ever the same twice, but forensic handwriting examiners are used to this. Apparently there are always commonalities in letter construction, stroke etc. and that people tend to vary their own signature in reasonably predictable ways. Unlike when someone else with their own writing habits tries to copy it. I was just casually interested in the field once upon a time. But some of the books are so damn dry that I never finished them so don't take my word for anything here.
Meh. Do you recreate your sig identically every time?... I definitely don't... but I do get it this close.
I have no idea who Noelk is, but he clearly knows a thing or two about handwriting recognition/examination. Maybe he's an expert witness? Analysts are typically quite able to tell the difference between the normal variance in someone signing their name, and someone else signing it. Fookin' too clever by half if you ask me.
Same old bloody people featured over & over again.
Agreed. I find the random assortment of folk in BGM's Lowdown section to be much more interesting than three pagers with bassists I've either a) no interest in, 2) have nothing to say for themselves, or c) are w***ers (yes Berlin, I'm talking to you).

Most musicians really aren't that interesting.

I probably should have played it to satisfy some curiosity. To me it seemed like a really weird kind of setup for a bass they're hoping to sell. BTW Loving the extra knowledge this casual thread has turned out. Cheers guys.

That's way too hardcore for me Ma. Especially to do it drunk!?!?!
You're right - it's pants.
Hahaha. Hey mate, I didn't realise you were online there. Good to know your time explaining this stuff to me wasn't wasted.

I was in a music shop today... having a good ol' time mucking around with equipment etc. (mainly guitars I'm afraid - the basses were mostly all strung up out of reach) and chatting with the shop manager who seemed a good guy if a little determined to flog me anything. But they had this Dean - probably quite nicely priced - which I looked at and thought the action was very high. Then I did the thing where you press the first and last frets and look at the string gap. Except there wasn't any. The string sat on the frets all the way up the fretboard. That's bad right? Neck needs adjusting? I did mention it briefly to the guy who replied that's a pretty nice bass at a good price and whilst action etc. can be adjusted, he disagreed that it was as bad as I thought. Which lead me to wonder, have I misunderstand the wise words of The Bass Doc and the friendly people here when I've tried to learn about this stuff? Or am I absolutely right in my assessment that the action was pants?

Just going to bump this to ask a quick question. If you play with three fingers, do you always run 4,3,2,4,3,2,4,3,2 etc. (or is that 3,2,1 - can never remember whether the thumb is counted on bass) or 4,3,2,3,4,3,2,3.4 etc.? I tend to use a kind of floating thumb technique for muting (in the sense that I'm trying ) Cheers.

Welcome. (Used to live in (or as Alex would say, "near") Brighton. That is all.)

Fine. Then there should also be a separate forum for right-handed players so that we can talk about only rightie issues. And can I join both since I am left handed but play regular?

For around £150-£200 (with some serious shopping around) you can get the Alesis M1 MkII active monitors which are almost a de-facto standard at that end of the market. So popular - and for good reason. I love mine.
A monster playing a monster! The perfect fit!
Oh yes. So if anyone is in any doubt whether the BTB series can cut the mustard in a hard rock band.. just ask the hell bull there. I'm hoping you sell this before I think of a way to avoid paying bills this month. I don't need a 5... I don't need a 5... I don't need a 5... -
Not quite sure how Eight managed to get through basses in two months, especially money wise.
I don't think that'll be happening again. Aside from being happy for the moment, I am seriously skint.

My (hard learned) philosophy on first instruments is never to spend real money. Even when I've bought something good, I inevitably find as I learn and develop then my tastes change and I want something else. e.g. I'm on my third bass and I only started playing in December. Hopefully you're not as fickle as me.
