Giving a member a chance before you leave negative feedback!

It's now been over a month since I contacted you re. the problems, please respond before I leave details for the BC populace. -
The SVT III Pro is on full power at 4 ohms, so to get the full power into your cab you need a 4 ohm cab, but to have the option of a bigger rig and hooking up with another cab later on, you need an 8 ohm cab. Something to look at here would be the dB rating of the cab itself. 350 watts at 8 ohms into a cab rated at 104dB will likely be louder than the 500 watts at 4 ohms into a cab rated at 99dB from the same amp. A generalisation I know, but it`s dB that is the "real power".
Agreed, I'd go for a more sensitive 8ohm cab every time as it gives you the option to add a 2nd cab when needed and you'd likely not hear any difference in output over the 4ohm cab... mind saying that, I've had cabs throw up strange anomalies but by and large I'd go with the rule Lozz has indicated.

Well it'd be interesting to test him on his offer of 'money back' but who's definition of; 'as good as a USA Fender bass' and which USA Fender bass, as I've played some crackers... and some dogs! Oh and it does boil my urine when people claim Squier basses from the 90s are 'JV' series... they are NOT.
IME, a good set of 210's paried slays 2x112 ..
Ooof, even for an 'IME' that's a sweeping generalisation and to use the term 'slay'! I've owned and tried some very good 2x10 cabs and I've also owned and tried similarly good 1x12 cabs and I'd not be so confident in making that statement; there are 1x12 cabs available that are easily the equal of the 2x10 cabs.

Treble hum on my warwck thumb
warwickhunt replied to Phil-osopher10's topic in Repairs and Technical
The preamp circuit on Warwicks (99.9% likely an MEC on a 94 but regardless...) is generally pretty noise free and even when cranked all the way up I've never had induced hum. Need a bit more info really but a couple things to consider; are you playing near strip/fluorescent lighting or dimmer switches and/or is does the place you are playing your bass have a history of dodgy electrics? Have you tried the bass in other locations and/or with other amps? Are you saying that the 'bass' is producing hum even when the treble control isn't up? You may well have a wiring or preamp fault but I'd eliminate all other possibilities first. -
...giving a member a chance before I do! Either respond to my calls and last email (regardless of your 'personal' circumstances) or I'll take appropriate action and also leave you negative feedback.
Is it possible to list @ US$ within the UK ? :- http://www.ebay.co.u...984.m1438.l2649 Item location is Chicester (aka. Chichester), W. Sussex .. BUT Post(s) to: United States I've seen this type of thing before. Always a scam??
Not always a scam. I used to sell stuff in Europe (exclusively as I got more for it than in the UK) and my listings were in Euro. 'If' I were interested in the bass I'd be asking for detailed pics and as for the timber purchased; I don't think that will be the bass he is selling, it may be he has had a go at making a bass and hence selling the Zon... but I'd seriously either want to see the bass or at least loads of detailed pics.

It's 'likely' that if WoT went for this and wanted it refinishing he'd go to The Overwater Custom Shop (Dave is a member on here and ex-Overwater finisher now doing work for Sobell Guitars and artists like M Knopfler) and I think £400 is about the going rate for a quality refin.

I feel a trip to Haltwhistle coming on Michael! LOL

I own several other basses by different manufacturers and though I've had Warwick basses for over 20 years, I still like other flavours! It's not like I am considering buying a Roscoe and never owning another Warwick, I've owned 30+ (may be closer to 40 now) NT Warwicks over the last 20+ years, inc 3 that I presently keep and I'm sure that I'll own others in the future. I am interested in your Roscoe (heard lots of good things and the weight is right) but the one thing that I don't own is a 5 string Warwick to trade; I've never gotten on with 5 strings despite trying several times. I do own a 4 string SSI that I could add to a trade and as I said regarding me buying a 5 string to trade with you; I could do that but if I bought a 5 and you changed your mind or didn't like the 5 that I offered... I'd be left with a bass I couldn't/wouldn't use!

Pick up only please from Bristol (Bedminster).
Bit of a bargain for someone... if I were in Bristol I'd have them just to make a 4x12 stack (even though I could only use two)! -

I had an Audere in one of my basses and I know what you mean about it sounding 'active' BUT... it came into its own in a live setting, really lifted it head and shoulders above other active preamps; added to which when recording or noodling in the house you can tame some of the 'active' with the EQ. However, weight is something you can't do anything about, that and if that hadn't been blue, I'd have been sniffing at it!

Well it is up to £50 so it's either a canny joke, an expensive empty box or a very cheap Ampeg cab!

Do I have a problem with my new GK amp and cabs
warwickhunt replied to BH12neil's topic in Amps and Cabs
There's generally a little bit of background hiss and hum - you won't hear it when you're playing.
However 'some' amps have a lot more background noise than others and it is a bug-bear of mine so I'd not give an amp houseroom if it wasn't almost silent when not in use. I have to say that my experience of GK amps is that they are generally not the quietest of amps (not eh worst) and unless you have an excellent clean leccy supply they can be awful! I briefly owned a 1001RB but couldn't get on with the background hiss... sold it sharpish. Saying that many people play GK and never comment on the matter, so it is down to personal tolerance. As others have said, try your amp without the bass plugged in and also try you amp with another cab as it could be that the horn/top end on the cabs is revealing more than you are used to; why not try other speaker leads as well. -

Hartke LH500 or virtually any of the Peavey stuff (the old amps are bombproof and can be had for peanuts).

I'm sure it will have been covered. My last band had to declare as the guitarist was a solicitor and it'd have barred him had he been done for tax evasion. His accountant basically got him money back from the tax man on monies spent on equipment etc. for the first two years but then his accountant basically told him that we/he could no longer claim back as we spent more on instruments, gear strings, fuel etc. than we actually earned, the tax man declared it as a hobby and as such we couldn't get money back and they wouldn't/couldn't tax us. It all depends on the number of gigs you are doing, the fee you are getting for those gigs and to a degree the amount of money you spend on gear and associated costs; pub bands and originals bands just starting out (...or even established originals bands) are likely to make so little that it falls into the hobbyist category. HOWEVER, everyone's circumstances are different so you'd need to check out exactly where 'you' stand!
I work in the insurance industry & know that my insurance covers me for. If you're not sure what yours covers, call the claims dept of your insurer & ask them. I've checked using my knowledge & also those of the claims & underwriting depts too. With my insurance it will also cover for business use if I want & I only have to specify individual items if they're over £2500 & not being used for "business purposes". If you need some help, PM me or ask me on here. WH, "Proffiesionally" can vary from insurer but here's what I have: Business Use

Specifically excluded from the Personal Belongings section but cover can be provided subject to the item being specified.
Specify by selecting 'Other clothing and personal effects' and infill the item description and sum insured.
Apply the following item level free format clause and infill the item description to extend cover to business use:
Business Use The PERSONAL BELONGINGS SECTION covers your (Infill) whilst being used for business or professional purposes.
The problem is that a lot of folks either don't want to have to pay a bit extra or are simply afraid to ask questions because they don't want to hear the truth, so they opt for the cheapest insurance and act like an ostrich when it comes to expecting cover in the event of a claim. I've declared to my insurance company that I play with other musicians in pubs and I've declared that it is a hobby that I get remuneration for (though it is so small the tax man laughed when we tried to offset our bands earnings against tax, we were told we were hobbyists and not to be so silly as to try and claim it is a 2nd income etc).
-
Those folks with 'home insurance' - several of you have identified that you aren't covered 'professionally'... have you identified what that actually means? I had a revealing discussion with a friend who works in insurance and I was highlighting the fact that most folks that I knew had their gear covered under house insurance, he asked about gigging (which tbh many of us do). I elaborated saying for most it is a hobby and of those that gig, house insurance cover is probably more than sufficient. It appears not! If you gig (especially if you get paid but even if you do it for free... or at a loss), then you can be considered to be doing it 'professionally'. I pointed out that only a divvy would claim on his household insurance and say he was a paid gigging musician... turns out many do and companies are more and more refusing to pay out. The other scenario was that he knew of claims where stuff went missing during burglaries etc. and the claim form clearly showed that the type of equipment stolen would be above and beyond that normally expected to be used in the home (he quoted Marshall stacks etc with multiple instruments worth £***/£****), insurance companies then argued that this could only be 'professional' use... and if the onus is on you to prove otherwise you are on the back foot. It really is worth asking the direct question about your gear being covered (rather than just assuming in the blind faith that you will be covered just because you put down on the application form that you had music equipment) and divulging exactly what you do (in writing) so that they can't try and squirm out at a later date!

new pickups (and pre?) for my warwick ss1 4st- recomendations
warwickhunt replied to LukeFRC's topic in Bass Guitars
The Barts never made it into a Streamer but I've had SSI basses with Barts and I'd describe them as having a dark low mid tone (I'm rubbish at frequencies and such but colours and textures I can do LOL). I'd agree that Barts are a good choice if you don't like the MECs and buying used means you won't lose much if you don't like!
