I should add that they are very light, compact and easy to use.

We/I use a pair of i-color-3 lights set to 'sound-to-light' and for pub gigs they are perfectly adequate. There are two sets available used locally; i-color 3 @ £120 and i-color 4 @ £150 so that gives an idea of used prices. Bulbs haven't gone in two years and if they do go they are relatively cheap. Not the best clip to demonstrate as one of the band set the sound to light with insufficient sensitivity (the 'flower' lights were the pubs but the general flood gives you an idea). Creating a big (12 string) sound with a 4 string bass
warwickhunt replied to warwickhunt's topic in General Discussion
Er... No expert on such matters ( I don't use FX) but I notice that setting a pitch-shifter back to "flat" gives an awesome semi-chorus. It reproduces the input note again with the delay caused by processing time. That'd give you the sound of the 2nd and 3rd courses, all you need is something (another pitch-shifter?) to give the octave "up" without too much latency (good luck with that at low pitches if not using midi!) Otherwise, the Variax has 8 and 12-string models (one of which is based on a Hagstrom IIRC) I was meddling with one in a music shop and put it onto the 12 string model and cracked out a well-delivered opening few bars of "Jeremy" That made a lot of people turn round! (not my intent! I was just trying it out!!)
Oddly enough I sold a Variax about 2 years ago... contacting the buyer to see if he has it only just yesterday. -
Going to Manchester, simply to see Cheap Trick.
I went to Glasgow... simply to see Cheap Trick! Loved the fact that CT's set was made up of all sorts of older stuff (+the obligatory IWYTWM) and it was a pleasure to hear TP's 12 string in the flesh so to speak. Deep Purple were OK but I was bored out of my tree with solos! Many, many years since I've been to a gig where EVERY band member did a solo spot (or two)... what is that all about. Enjoyed the old stuff but have to confess that the highlight was the classical bits and the fiddle/violin v guitar duel. Long live Cheap Trick.
30db? You'd be standing there in silence!!
I've got to agree! I'm no scientist/mathematician but I'm fairly certain that fitting plugs that attenuated the sound by 30db would be like putting your head in a crash helmet... wrapped in cotton wool... in a box surrounded by bubble-wrap! I can honestly say that I gig in a loud band and the 15db cut means that I have no adverse affects and yet I can hear the band OK, when I tried the 22db plugs I felt that it was a little too much reduction for me personally but to cut by 30db I seriously doubt that I could hear what anyone else in the band (inc me) would be doing. It's a bit like to sound twice as loud, you only need an increase of single figure db's. Added to which an average band don't play at a consistent 110db, even the H&SE website quotes bands/musicians as playing at 100db. The other consideration is that you have to take into account that certain frequencies are more damaging (hence those standing to one side of the kit, year in year out tend to be affected in one ear by the cymbals more than the general on stage volume) and fitting plugs brings those frequencies down to manageable/acceptable levels. I'm off to do some research on the logarithmic affect on perceived volume with attenuation of varying degrees.

Creating a big (12 string) sound with a 4 string bass
You could always stick a small mixer in front of the rigs and re EQ the output to the guitar amp to trim the bottom end off. A guitar amp is never going to put enough out to carry to an audience without the speakers dying. I'd still say you'll never get a 12 strings ound from a 4 string. I reckon you'll be very happy with the sound if you get an 8 string bass and a mix of 10 / 15" speakers.
I ran it the other day at rehearsal very much as you suggested and the nature of amplifying treble meant that I didn't need to crank the guitar combo too much for it to be heard. However when I simply ran the full range effected signal into my rig it sounded better BUT saying all of that it didn't sound anything like the 12 string sound of TP (the effects actually octave the root note an octave and TWO down hence it sounded a bit much/mulch)! I very nearly got the Waterstone on ebay but the guy pulled the auction due to a lack of interest, possibly for the best as I'd actually much prefer a Hamer B12... chances of finding; nil. -
I was talking to the audiologist at at Northampton General Hospital a couple of weeks ago. He told me that the plug they provide are the same ER one, they just don't make a profit on them. He quoted £20 per ear. He also said that I should have 30db filters in them. This was based on an average band playing at 110db so 30db of cut brings it down to 80db which he said was the recommended level from the HSE. Lots of good information here http://www.hse.gov.uk/noise/
This sounded fabulous and something that I'd love my band to get sorted (I have moulded plugs, they don't) so I've just spoken to the local hospital(s) and I've been categorically told that they will not/can not do custom moulds with the exception of referrals through GPs and those would be done on the NHS for a specific complaint or condition pertaining to a health risk and not just because you play in a loud band. I enquired about the fact that I'd read that you could get plugs for £20 and one hospital can and do supply ear plugs but they are the Etymotic 'Christmas Tree' plugs that you can buy on ebay for less than a tenner. I'm not trying to urinate on anyone's fire but if this were available at £20 then I'd be shouting from the rooftops.
Agree and I know its not best condition for selling, I´ll try to solve this problem asap. I´ve tried to make price regarding mentioned issue. Whats the usual price of fully working 800RB??
I sold one a while ago on here and it had a slight fault (rectified I believe for not a lot of money) and IIRC I sold it for £175 delivered. I think a fully working one was sold just a couple of months ago for £300 (a quick search should turn it up). The problem with any equipment with a fault is that you don't know what the repair costs are going to finally push the price to; hence when I sold mine the buyer could have been looking at a £20 repair (which is close to what it was iirc) but it could equally have been £200! -
I beg to differ but there you go
Of course you can have a differing opinion and I'd that's the point of forums (especially this one), you can air your views and explain why you think something. So why should NHS moulds be better than Boots, Specsavers or any other audiologist fitting? I have had moulded plugs fitted and the moulding process couldn't be simpler and anyone with care and competence can take the mould. I concur you could get someone in a non-NHS situation who doesn't take care and may not be competent BUT it could be argued that an NHS employee could be equally incompetent; both parties need to be trained and at the end of the day if you are paying for the service (from either party) then you can demand that it is done again/effectively! No disrespect to your wife but NHS does not guarantee qualitythat would be greater then anywhere else though it could just as easily be the equal of. You pays your money...
Sorry, should have mentioned but my wife is an audiologist and I was just curious to know where, how you got them and how much they cost. Discussions about hearing loss/protection etc.. always interest her from a professional point of view. She may be biased but she says try your local NHS Trust Audiology department. Not as widespread as Specsavers but they may be cheaper and the technical quality of the mould is likely to be better.
Local NHS audiology dept's taking custom moulds and selling them cheaper than Specsavers et al... 'technical' quality of the mould!
No love for true classic??
Loads of love for the 800RB but the issue of having to switch on/off several times is (IMHO) the likely reason for limited responses. If it is an easy fix I'd see about getting that done as it may well be worth the outlay by you to secure a sale. -
If it has to be a 4x10 don't dismiss the Peavey TX (TVX) 4x10 as it gives 99% of the SWR tone for a fraction of the price (especially used)... IMHO.
Can I ask: How much do these cost? When you say moulded are they a "one size fits all" or specifically moulded to your ear shape like a hearing aid mould? If specifically moulded who does it and where do you go to get it done?
Specially moulded to your ear and many places do it (look in the yellow pages) but Specsavers on the local High St is as good as anywhere.
Have you got an ER15s cloning lab going or something? I bought a spare set from you last year!
Specsavers apologised for messing up my moulds by giving me spare sets! As to needing more than 15db of reduction; obviously it is personal preference but if I were to use any more than 15db attenuation I think I'd be too isolated from the onstage mix. As for requiring more than 15db to prevent hearing damage; I'm not sure of the science/maths behind it but I'm confident that if you were playing so loud that 15db reduction wasn't sufficient then you'd be playing so loud that the difference between 15db and 24db wouldn't save your hearing... actually thinking of the maths side of it, I'm not sure that any cab/amp combination could go loud enough to damage your hearing whilst wearing 15db of attenuation.
AFAIK these filters are interchangeable, so why not err on the side of caution and get both ?
If you get the 22db and don't like them I have a brand new (in packet) set of 15s for sale (Etymotic Research ones)!
I've got a pair of SL 112's on loan at the moment. Cannot believe how light they are! Haven't had much time to really listen to them at any sort of volume yet though.
Be interested to see how you think the dinky 12s stack up against the DB12s. -

Leftly-loosely, righty-tighty question
warwickhunt replied to Mornats's topic in Repairs and Technical
I actually think the quarter turn and leave it twenty four hours is nonsense. If it needs a quarter turn then fine but if it needs a half turn or more, then that's what it needs.
However... there are some necks/woods that react more slowly and over a greater period of time. If you need to go much past a half turn between set-ups then you are moving the neck a fair bit. If the neck was a slow mover and you crank it 1/2 to full turn you might find that initially you get the reaction that you want BUT 24hrs (or more) later the neck has moved even further and you have to adjust it back. I'm not saying that you are wrong and I certainly don't subscribe to a 1/4 turn then leave it 24hrs, as I'll tweak it a 1/2 turn or so but much past that and if it is a new bass to me then I'll leave it sitting a while with the strings up to tension before I have another look. -
Leftly-loosely, righty-tighty question
warwickhunt replied to Mornats's topic in Repairs and Technical
Of course there are exceptions to the rule, I've owned several 80's Warwick basses and the rods have worked the opposite way! My advice is always to take it a bit at a time and NEVER assume that 'righty is tighty'.
