  1. I'll go for relatively melodic.... In the early Crass records, you could consider the basslines (Pete Wright) as the sole melodic element:
  2. Just a personal viewpoint coming up, I realise that loads of people here love choosing tuners and stuff........ I wouldn't have a custom guitar or bass made for me as I have no idea what tuners I like best and don't want to invest any time/effort into finding out. I prefer to just buy an off-the-shelf guitar and let the manufacturer make the choice. Sorry to not really answer your question, hope you get some meaningful answers from others!
  3. I try to have a go on drums now and again.... lucky if it happens more than once in a year though. I stood in on drums (rehearsal only!) a couple of times for my old band when the drummer was away. I was much better than either of the other two guys would have been, but nowhere near good enough to gig it. Good fun though! occasionally book a rehearsal room and have a bash to some tracks I record at home. In fact, I reckon I'm due a drum session any time now πŸ™‚.
  4. I heard a few great songs by this artist, but they didn't have an album so I'm waiting for it.... should be around about now. Liked her so much that I can't remember her name πŸ™‚ ! I'll have to post a question on one my FB groups....... I think someone will know!
  5. There has to be something to reel you in.
  6. To be fair (no pun intended) Fairport's music does actually sound British.
  7. Birth Certificates I suppose πŸ˜‰
  8. Posted in error.
  9. JJ and Hugh, The Stranglers, Dead Los Angeles
  10. Played debut (not counting a few weeks ago at a very small session) Clawhammer banjo (Cornbread and Butterbeans) at my monthly folk/acoustic session last week ... went down well and someone suggested doing another one next time. So I'm working on "Georgie Buck", alternating between instrumental and vocal sections. Bad timing with the acrylic nail.... it had grown out too much, and fell off during my performance! didn't matter though as it had protected the natural nail enough to play with real nail. New acrylic has been glued on since..
  11. I don't get why the OP is quoting himself and asking himself what he means? (I guess just a language thing, but it did look strange at first sight!)
  12. I wouldn't worry about the band wanting you to stick to one bass... it's probably doesn't make enough difference in sound to compensate for the disruption of flow in the set. Just pick the best bass and stick with it. I can't advise which is the best bass, but the BC collective will advise you ( seems like they are saying Jazz).
  13. That amphitheatre is fantastic!
  14. I'm liking the bass players name too:
  15. Dave Olney and the X-Rays
  16. If anyone wants to see the original, it’s on BBC2 tonight at 10.40
  17. Here's my entry for the May comp. In the picture I saw the light.... so theme of song is 'seeing the light'. Musically it is a nod to the various spiritually-tinged songs on the Velvet Underground's 3rd album. Technical details: DAW: Studio One; Drums: Programmed piano-roll with a 'Led-Zep' kit, plus live shaker, tambourine and wooden-scrapey -thing; Bass: Vantage Avenger; Guitars: Squire Tele and Vox Standard 25; Keys: Studio one piano and organ; Vocals via Behringer condenser mic. Lyrics in spoiler:
  18. For me, that is the ultimate 'And The' band name!
  19. Johnny Kid and the Pirates
  20. Spinal tap story, based around alternative band The Fall. The Fall's eccentric leader Mark E Smith used to play Spinal Tap movie a lot on the tour bus, which meant the rest of the band were forced to watch. One night bassist Steve Hanley played the main riff to a Spinal Tap song as a soundcheck. Mark E Smith said something like "That's good, save it for the next album". Steve assumed he was joking, and really recognised the riff as Spinal Tap. However, come the time to make the album Smith insisted that the riff was used as the basis of a song to the consternation of the rest of the band. (Spinal Tap "Tonight I'm Gonna Rock You Tonight" > The Fall "Athlete Cured")
  21. So good that Johnny Thunders used it too!
  22. frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention
  23. Ignore - comment deleted. I shouldn't try to read the rules before waking up!
