Yes, I neglected to update this thread but managed to acquire, courtesy of @pst62 Pete one of the Classic Pro basses that weighs just 8lbs. Like you, I had a USA one and, like, you, would say this Epiphone stacks up nicely against it. Were I to change the headstock decal (which I won't) I would guarantee no-one would notice the difference.

I did this to a neck that had a back bow but truss rod not turning any more. Worked a treat, albeit a bit scary.

FWIW (which in the context of discussion is precisely zero :)) I really like the Big Al bass shape. I'm a big fan of mid-20th century design and this looks very 'retro/50s/atomic' inspired to my eyes, although I am not sure the headstock matches particularly well. Black with maple neck looks great (of course, doesn't it always? :))

ZZ Top's original is moody and understated but I love the solo in this version when it winds up around 2:35 in. Makes the hair stand up on my neck

Yup. Couple from 1970 - Deep Purple with Black Knight and black Sabbath with paranoid. But, yes, also OGWT. Pirate radio stations. My mate Clive who used to borrow his older brother's records. My mate Bill who just seemed to have bought whatever was cool before anyone else.

Worth considering Aguilar AG4P-60. They give a lush, warm, vintage tone.

During lockdown I stepped down from a Bon Jovi tribute band for a cocktail of reasons that resulted in my heart just not being in it. So I'm in just one band now, a blues/rock trio covering stuff from Hendrix, Cream, ZZ Top, Jeff Healey, Freddie King etc. Most usually we 'interpret' songs our own way. There's some rumblings about chucking in the odd original but I'm not convinced. We're not busy, nor do we want to be - this year we have 9 gigs in the diary, two now done. Coming up is a support slot for a pro touring blues band, a slot at the Dereham Blues Festival and the rest pub gigs. Hopefully we'll also get a slot at the Ipswich Maritime festival this year but that has yet to be announced. I've been in quite a few bands over the years but this one resonates with my soul more than any other, playing music I love that I grew up with and is part of my DNA
