Stagefright - who suffers from it and how do you deal with it?
leschirons replied to 4000's topic in General Discussion
This topic has been quite an eye-opener for me, and a little upsetting reading posts about some of your experiences. I've probably got 1,000 gigs under my belt and have never had this problem. Having said this, it has become obvious to me that over the years I've maybe been a little unforgiving about fellow band mates who have possibly been suffering with this issue and I've not realised, nor been supportive. I will certainly give this consideration in the future. I'm not what I'd call a great player so maybe I'm over confident about my ability but no-one complains and I just seem to enjoy the challenge and buzz of playing live. I really hope that you manage to crack this. I had no idea that this was so commonplace. Best wishes to you all. -
Greetings from a guitarist trying to learn bass
leschirons replied to spiderjazz's topic in Introductions
Welcome to the forum. There's lots of great info here and there's also the "Other instruments" section to cater for the multi-stringer side of things along with all other stuff. -
Here's a BBQ pic of our French guitarist. Are you sure you'd want to hear him play? I think not.

Being a guitar hero has as much to do with public profile rather than just ability. I guess Guthrie could be a guitar hero to many guitarists but he's not a household name unfortunately. But everyone, old young etc has heard of Clapton, Page and Hendrix. Even if they have no desire to play an instrument whatsoever. If it's just down to great playing, then Leslie West was always my guitar hero and Tony McAlpine in later years. If it's down to public opinion, I guess it's the Slashes and Samboras of this world. Maybe Gary Moore also.

Sad to hear this. Hope you get it all back. Some seriously nice (and hopefully easy to spot) gear there.

£33 to see what is really only a covers band
leschirons replied to Blademan_98's topic in General Discussion
Saw the Illegal Eagles a few times in the past but only for the reason that I got free tickets each time as I was printing the merchandise. Tickets used to be about £15. The band were very very good and a lot less sloppy than the real deal live but I wouldn't have paid to go. However, a reasonable meal for two with a nice bottle of wine is probably £75 so sounds not too expensive for the whole shebang for you and the Mrs if you love the music anyway. -
He moved rock guitar forward when it was out of fashion and put it back on the map. Sad loss.

Fodera keep making them because people will keep buying them so they're only too expensive to those of us that can't afford them. I can understand $10,000 for a new bass more than I can $60,000 for a secondhand Dumble 50watt combo.

Most hateful song on your covers bands set list?

Little wing. (I need to find a band with no guitarist) -
Bought a KSD 705 from Andy recently. Great deal, great condition and efficiently packed. Great comms and nice bloke all round. Buy / sell with confidence.
I've recently had the pleasure of gigging with all my fellow Licklibrary tutor guitarists, Andy James, Jamie Humphries, Mike Casswell, Danny Gill and Stuart Bull. Add to the mix, Pin (ex-Sikth) who i worked with in a band for a cuppla years, Steve Smyth (Forbidden/Nevermore/Testament) from a recent project and Jamie Hunt (ex-biomechanical) and the superb Leah Woodward who plays with Pin in the band Aliases, i reckon they are amongst my fave guitarists and friends. They all have their own styles and feel, even if some are in to brutal tech metal!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nWnQfvvNdLI Nice playing from Jamie on this track. Known him for a few years now.

A bloke walks into a music shop........
leschirons replied to LeftyBiskit's topic in General Discussion
I buy strings online from the French equivalent of Stringbusters far cheaper than in the stores. However, there is an attraction about a music shop. I can't ever remember walking in, straight to the counter, buying and then back out the door. There's always stuff that catches my eye so I'll look, pick it up, strum it , plug it in etc. It will be a shame if we lose them all and although I may buy strings online, I never buy new gear or instruments online. Someone in a shop somewhere, will always do a deal somehow. So I give them a chance to do so. -
I had a Roscoe Beck. Best fiver I've ever owned or played. Only got rid of it to fund a BN5 and although a Fabulous bass, regretted it afterwards.

What do you do with basses you don't play?
leschirons replied to woodyratm's topic in General Discussion
For me, the plan is to not have basses I won't use. Different if you keep them for investment or sentimental reasons I guess. At the moment, I have what I need but I have in the past, been guilty of hanging onto stuff that doesn't get used and it just ends up on the wall. Looks nice, but a waste of money and space. -
Never uderstood it myself, Peavey make good sounding, reliable, good value gear. Only problem I`ve ever found with Peavey is the weight of their gear.
+1 Had a Peavey Combo 300 years ago. The ONLY reason to sell was that I couldn't lift it into the boot on my own. Great stuff. If they halved the weight, I'd buy Peavey again.

This is what's on their website. I think the problem may be the word "request" We constantly monitor our competitors prices to ensure that we're the best. However if you do find it cheaper, you can request an INSTANT price match during our opening hours by phone on 01702 436501, or by e-mail to

I'm far too old and "rock" to know what's what however, our daughter's partner is a DJ and produced tons of this type of stuff with MAGIX software and a USB keyboard. He gave me a quick (2 hours, yawn, but you have to appear keen))demo of it, and I must admit, I was impressed. Basslines, drum loops, loads of samples, all there, thousands of the buggers. Apparently there are tons of stuff to download free as well. He then just uses an M.Audio interface if he needs to add anything in way of guitars, vocals etc. He gave me the software and I have used it a few times just to do backing trax for guitar. Works a treat.

Best way to ship bass to Europe???
leschirons replied to Rick's Fine '52's topic in General Discussion
That's handy then?!? Thanks for the warning!
That's worth checking out then. I've always had the insurance as I was the client of GLS. at this end. -

leschirons replied to Rick's Fine '52's topic in General Discussion
It's probably still worth giving Parcelforce a call. When I've sent stuff over from France, I use a French company called GLS. They have a reciprocal arrangement with Parcelforce and I'd guess that Parcelforce will have a similar arrangement with a German courrier. I've had no problems. If you want a more recognised international outfit, then UPS but they're likely to be slightly more expensive. As with everything, you get what you pay for. -
Don't quite follow you I'm afraid
Simply refering to the realisation that I'm too old to make judgements on what type of amp tones define metal after listening to your band. Its not a genre I follow so maybe should have not suggested anything. I was purely going on budget / price. To me, 100 /120 watt heads can "do" metal. I'm not enough of an expert to discern the different amps required for certain types of music

At the main page, click on "petites annonces" for all the secondhand gear and then follow the obvious links for Basse / Basse electrique etc The French are huge Fender users and there's usually hundreds on here, on hundreds of pages. If you find something, most of them will be able to read and reply in English and are usually happy to deal with a Brit. Most will accept Paypal to get round the currency problem. The French usually want very good money for secondhand gear but surprisingly, the real vintage stuff (1960s Precisions etc) seem to go for a lot less than Denmark Street prices. It's good for a mooch around anyway if you're bored. In fact here's one on this site.
