1. Hi, I have a Moeck 3 piece recorder (soprano I think, it blows a D with all holes uncovered) it's 33cms in length and made of what looks like maple or maybe box wood. Problem is, I can't identify the model, The Moeck website is no use and when I look at suppliers websites, there seem to be about 10 models that all fit the description, ranging from £90 to £500. Any help appreciated.
2. Just collected an OLP from Josh. Only sorry that I didn't, have time to stay and chat. Goods better than expected, and obvious that he really looks after his gear. Bottom line, lovely guy, pleasure to deal with and a credit to Basschat. Buy and sell with utmost confidence. Great comms throughout.
Are you leaving because you can't spell deleting?
So, its your job to make SURE he leaves is it?
4. I saw a red Status Energy in the for sale section recently (and a green one) Great sound, body not huge and a shallow neck. They weigh next to nothing as the body slab is about as thick as a Rizla. My first proper bass one of those. Great value for money and very playable. Other than that, a Hohner Steinberger.
5. Maybe it was for the for sale section. If so, does it play like butter?
6. Hi, you need to state a value for your Genz
7. Talking to my pals back in the UK, what you're getting for a pub gig is around the norm. There are one or two bands I know who get quite a bit more but they are known for bringing a huge following and never fail to pack a pub to breaking point. If you're going to move towards function / private gigs, the chances are that your rock covers setlist will need a few changes as people will want danceable party numbers and you'll need to be flexible when you see your audience. The function bands I've played with in the past had all been able to adjust the setlist as we went along depending on what we've thought the audience would be up for on any given night. I wouldn't go out on a function with any less than 80 - 100 numbers under the belt and there will be some established bands on here that have many, many more in their repetoire. Therefor, a lot of work goes into it and should be charged for accordingly. Over here (France) most of the bands I've played with go out for 350 - 400 euros for a bar or restaurant gig, 500 - 600 for a function and the occaisional little great payer if it's something special like the French guitar festival where our trio got 350 each for a 30 min set but they are few and far between.
8. If you offer him the opportunity to arrange his own courier, it means you, or someone else will still have to be there for the collection if it's not from your workplace. Too much grief. Go with the other guy.
9. The thing that comes across is that you all want to be there and are enjoying yourselves which is very important. The audience reaction was good so nothing to worry about there. Its obvious you've all put the work in and seeing as it was your first ever gig, I think it was great. Enjoy your band and mates, and best of luck for the future.
10. Yes, a nice sentiment (but only because I've found one at last)
11. If you can still play for 30 mins a time, write, record and are into keys and guitar as well, sounds like you still have an awful lot of positives remaining. Best of luck.
12.
What is it with women and this "more wood " business ?
You've gone off piste again haven't you?
13.
I loved the ambivalence from French shop staff when i lived there. We had a guy in our local France Telecom shop who learned to swear in English just so he could have a right pop at me. It was great as he would rant at me in Clouseau type swearing then i would correct him when he got something wrong which made him madder until he slipped back into his native tongue. Then there was the baker who would always ask me to repeat my order even though i bought pretty much the same thing every day. After about a year i plucked up courage and asked them why they did this. They said it was because they liked my "naughty little English accent" Vivre la Republique
This all sounds so familiar. Once, when asked by a shopkeeper which direction I was going in (as he did not have what I wanted) I replied, in a very passable French accent, Chateauroux. "Quoi? Chateauroux I replied a second time. "Ou" CHATEAUROUX (raised voice) "J'ai pas compris" So, I wrote it down. "Aaaaah Chateauroux" I'm sure they do it on purpose I bet you miss it really.
14. Usually, a bass appears to become "classic" when it's really worth £250 but the chancer on Ebay wants £1,500 for it.
15. Our French guitarist popped into our local music shop to get some picks. The owner was not there (his pal) and the only member of staff was in charge. In walks a lady, to buy a Christmas present for her husband. An acoustic guitar. She starts to look at a couple on the wall, starting with an Epiphone (J200 type) She knows nothing about guitars which is fair enough as she expects the shop staff to point her in the right direction. Next, she looks at a slightly cheaper electro acoustic with a cut-away and then asks why the Epiphone is more expensive. The reply? Pointing to the jumbo "More wood....... more wood, more money, less wood, less money" and then promptly wanders off. At this point, our guitarist picks up the Epiphone, corrects the "so far out its unbelievable" tuning and gives her 5 mins of everything from his classical party piece to Wanted dead or alive and then a nice instrumental version of True colours. She bought the guitar (and a gigbag) No surprise that the shop is likely to be closing in 3 months due to lack of trade. He did tell the owner but the guy is still there!!
16. There are different levels of everything in the this world, including musicianship. The problem arises when others put their own meaning to whatever it is. Hence, it can get clicky and elitiste. If you play an instrument, whether it be in public or in private and achieve what you set out to do. You are a musician. It's usually others that tend to want to decide whether you are, or are not a musician (in their eyes) Just as an example, Gary Moore had virtually no theory, rarely used his little finger for fretting and couldn't read music. All things that go against the grain of what some percieve as a "real" musician. Especially tutors. Was he not a musician? I'd say he was, and a very successful and respected one. To the OP, yes you are, but it's up to you as to whatever level you wish to take that to.
17. Never had a Hamer bass but the best guitar I ever owned was an early production Signature Steve Stevens. Tremendous quality, tone and playability. As usual, I got rid of it and live to regret it. So yes, a sad day.
18. Got this from my brother as I wanted to get into a little home recording. Problem is, apparently it works with a Mac as it's Fire-wire connection. (Comes with the FW cable) Don't want to go down the Fire-wire to USB adaptor route as I've read they can mess things up. I use a laptop PC running Windows 7 so if anyone has a PC interface that'll work with Audacity and needs one for a Mac, maybe we can do a trade. Just remembered I need to state a trade value so £35 for the sake of putting something. Thanks.
19. Hi all, I know this is probably not the right forum but I have a French guitarist mate going over to London for the new year period and he's asked me if I know of any gigs in London around that time. Can't seem to get much info on the net so thought I'd ask. He's a guitar professor and pro muso and he's into anything from Michael Schenker to Larry Carlton, also big on blues, fusion and even classical. So, if anyone knows of any good likely guitar prominant gigs around this time, I'd really appreciate the nod. Thanks in anticipation.
20. I prefer the drummer on my right as we look out. I can get a good view of the kick pedal from there and it just seems better for the two of us re the eye contact and fun aspect. However, with the drummer I played with on Saturday, I'd have rather been in another building, or town.
21. Unit 2C Aston Industrial Est. / Parsens Lane Hope Valley Sheffield S33 6RB Hopefully someone else will confirm this, I assume it's current but who knows.
22. Just had a guitar exchange with Mike. Super guy, easy to deal with, good comms and guitar was as described (probably better in fact) I got my one to my son in the UK and Mike braved the snow etc to get the deal done. Top man buy / sell / exchange with confidence. Top Basschatter.
23. Not great tonight. Did a Blues band dep. Worst drummer in the universe (but a really nice guy) vocalist / rhthym guitar totally disorganised. Dropped a pile of lyric sheets all over the stage, changed guitars and spent 3 minutes putting the strap together (shoulder pad unthreaded) as he only seems to have the one strap for 3 guitars, and then went off for his jacket where he'd left his plectrum!! Not exactly great continuity. Like being in a band with the Chuckle brothers. The lead guitarist ( a mate) was the only one I could rely on as he's had loads of stage experience. Couldn't wait to get home
24.
Newton's Theory of Gravity is actually wrong. It is considered "good enough" because it works on our level, however it doesn't work on very, very small or very, very large objects.
Primarily, it doesn't work with things that move very fast ie, velocities nearer the speed of light.
25.
Fair comment mate, but well meant according to whose principles? If you look at Tom's quote below, he said this contest was no different to the 'rubbish' that is the X Factor and Pop Idol, which I disagree with because all the contestants are heard before the voting in those programmes, so it actually has more integrity than Tom's contest, ostensibly anyway. However the last sentence does it for me. And as I pointed out earlier, this kid's had loads of exposure already and collected many accolades and played 'everywhere'. So either Tom decided to leave that bit out, or the kid's bio is full of bullshit. I'm sorry but it pissed me off because it seems unfair, manipulative, and because he made a personal and highly ignorant dig at the UK, the place he expected to get help from! I know many of the colonists think we're a bunch of abortion-loving, squirrel-eating, godless commies, but criticising the X Factor really takes the biscuit, old egg
And yours if fair comment too but I guess for me the issue lay in whether he may have been asked to do this as a favour or took it upon himself to offer his help which we're not likely to find out anyway. Of course, if it's the latter then he should've been a little more informed and diplomatic in the approach. However, there have been many a time when I've been asked to help someone out, not thought it through and it's all gone wrong. I guess I just tend to give people the benefit of the doubt. As an aside, I saw the video and couldn't believe he'd more than ruined a classic Eric & Ernie number so he wouldn't have got my vote anyway.
