The BGM review model is the Amboyna Burl Monarch 4 Elite No - I'd never heard of him either. Turns out it's a type of wood..
Thanks for the info Drax. Well that's a relief now that I know it's Amboyna burl. For a moment there I thought it wasn't going to be worth the money.

I'm missing something here. The bass mentioned in the OP is listed in the current Fodera 2015 price list as $5050 . Even with import and VAT, where does this £11,000 come from?

All those archeologists that say they're "really excited" about every lump of pottery. I also hate the terms "dissing" and "way to go"

What do you listen to on the way home from a gig~
leschirons replied to Japhet's topic in General Discussion
Nothing at all. The setlist is all still going round in my head. -
We're always our own worst critics. Last function band I was in in the UK was like this. They got good work and good money and went down really well so, they all assumed that the band was great. Like you, I'm no Vic Wooten but like to get things right and polished. They would not listen so after 10 years of banging my head against a wall, I moved on. Obviously your band all agree it wasn't great so you have a good opportunity to improve the overall performance as everyone will have the same mindset. I've had murders in the past with a couple of bands with a "that'll do" attitude due to the apparent success of the gig. You're lucky to not be in that situation.
My band is adding to our repertoire again and although I'm slightly peevish - why does it always seem that what I want to play isn't 'quite right' or 'a bit lame' or... well yeah. I'm not that attached, though, so I'm happy to have a go at whatever numbers they want to play, but lately they seem to be picking numbers that are really beyond my playing ability - just too damned fast etc. I'm doing my best, but bass is a late discovery for me. Anyone else had that? Do I suggest they get a better bassist?
In an ideal world, no, just nail the bass parts and shut them all up. However, your post sort of suggests that you feel they are deliberately criticising your bass lines and making life hard for you by choosing difficult numbers. I'd have a word.

Out here, the use of Karaoke, D.J.s or singer with backing trax doesn't really happen. The venues I know tend to go for open mic nights or a duo to cut down on the cost of entertainment as they still prefer live entertainment. Generally, we play as much as we want these days albeit that it may be less than some of you would like to gig but it is our choice due to a; My age and other musical commitments b; The guitarists work schedule c; The singer's other musical commitments d; The drummer's other musical commitments We'll never get less than 90€ each for local gigs but sometimes an awful lot more if it's a function. Along with the duo thing I do, a few one-off gigs and a the odd dep, I'll probably play 40 gigs this year which quite frankly is far too many for me these days. The other bands also seem to do well re number of gigs but some do go out cheap. We've been asked if we can match other's cheaper fees but we always refuse although we have no problem doing a freebee for a good cause. So I guess it's quite healthy here. Of course, venues close but it seems that just as many open up, even if it's only for 2 or 3 years. I get the impression that the French will never tire of live music and will always support it.

On your last gig, which number went down the best?
leschirons replied to leschirons's topic in General Discussion
Some good stuff mentioned there. I intend to suggest "You gotta fight for your right to party" to whip up a little excitement. Anyone here already do it? -
What do you start with?
Rolling in the deep. -
Gigged a new line up last night for the first time (new drummer and new guitarist, both French) Myself and the singer had taken the opportunity to weed out some old numbers and make quite a few changes in the play list. To my surprise, the number that went down to tumultuous applause and screaming was "Crazy in love" Usually it's the Adele numbers or the French standards that we throw in. We do the Snow Patrol version so much rockier than the original. I admit I wasn't keen when it was first suggested but it was really fun to play and I couldn't believe the reaction. This will now be our new "end of gig biggie"

New venue last night and first outing with the 50% new line up. The place was tiny but had a great atmosphere. Went down really well but here you pay a price for that as they usually want a lot more. Supposed to finish at 11.30 and close at 12.00 but didn't finish playing until 1.10. Probably down to the set list as much as the band. Still, nice to have the punters shouting for more even as you're loading the car up
I'll hold my hand up and admit to being a grammar nazi, a spelling nazi, and an apostrophe nazi.

Don't you think sometimes it might be down to a poor education ? Or sometimes typos or predictive text...
Or maybe, he is actually a Nazi

First gig in a new venue. Apparently it's tiny and our drummer seems to have borrowed a tiny jungle kit so we can all fit in Still, it'll all be down to what the audience is like (and the food)

I don't like "Bad" meaning good, "Take out" as opposed to a take-away meal, the "Oh my God" shrieked at high volume by most females under 25 or worse, actually shouting "OMG" and "Whatevah" Not too keen on "The bottom line" either. I'm please that "groovy" may be making a comeback though due to Blue's one man quest to return to 1968. I quite liked "cool" too so I'll be joining his campaign.

should rehearsal costs be split equally?
leschirons replied to MacDaddy's topic in General Discussion
I think I'd be more forgiving - sometimes rehearsal is the only time you can get loud enough to see what you're going to sound like on the night. Unless it goes on for hours, that is...in which case nowt wrong with the guitarist turning up early.
I'd agree with you if he didn't finish work at 14.30, and have his own studio, which we use. I also find the anal guitar changes too much. Just because it's single coils or a humbucker on the original track FFS! It's a rehearsal . -
Because I've just read the "Why I sold my Rickenbacker" thread.

should rehearsal costs be split equally?
leschirons replied to MacDaddy's topic in General Discussion
Our guitarist insists on using his gig gear for rehearsals (guitar changes as well and all those sodding pedals) I find it pointless. I don't care if he's got the right sound for a solo, just the right notes or chords, in the right place. His tone choices are for gigs, not rehearsals. Re the OP, equal split unless someone is hiring gear because they're too lazy to bring theirs. -
What's the general standard of player who reads Basschat?
leschirons replied to lou24d53's topic in General Discussion
After the initial and bitter realisation at 18 that being a rock god, adored by all, was not going to happen, I spent the following 45 years having fun with my music hobby. I play a bit of this, a bit of that, get some seriously good money sometimes and play for free at other times. Sometimes to 3,000 people, sometimes to 6 people and an elderly Border Collie. We all feel we'd like to be better but to what end? if you can sight read, play anything that comes into your head and do all the other stuff associated with being a really great player, the chances are that playing would be your living, which in itself, changes how you feel about it. I should have worked harder at it without doubt but I certainly wouldn't want my financial survival to depend on it. -
Worth every penny if you're able to play just like him after you get it

ALS I believe. It usually is, unfortunately fatal. Doesn't seem to be any details but I guess it's that. Only 59 years old. Terrible.
