1. Torture. I have the cash. No problem. I also have a fledgling business which may need that cash someday. Torn asunder I am. I've briefly tried a 900 with my Super 12, and I don't think I've heard a better combination. Damn. Damn Damn. Sadly I think the business wins on this occasion, so I'll wish you all the best with the sale/trade.
2.
That used to be a hanging offence in "What Hi-fi" magazine.
Just had a 'Hi-Fi Answers' flashback. Disturbing.
3.
After much thought, I will almost certainly plump for a Genz Benz Streamliner 900 head, as it is supposed to be a bit warmer than the Shuttle. Will this work well with the Super 12, and what other cabs should I consider to get the best out of the Streamliner?
Streamliner 900 plus Super 12 is a great match, having heard that pairing and fallen in love with the sound.
4.
So you dressed down a bit for stage?
Not really no - it's was the pilot's overall gear for the stage. I was a bit untruthful about the blazer and slacks - never owned either as far as I know. Only photo I've got that shows some of the get-up.... I thought it was a good idea at the time.
5. ***Harp glissando*** .....as we are transported back to the 80s, where I used to wear a German jet pilot's overall, cartridge belt around the waist, a silver bow tie made from the left over stuff they stamp sequins out from, bright orange fluorescent streaks in the hair, and black glitter infused nail polish. On stage I wore an M&S blazer and a pair of beige Burtons slacks.
6. I had a WT550 die after trying to drive a cab that had a mis-wired crossover in it. The techie that repaired the amp commented on the build quality, the good layout of the components, and the standard of components compared with most bass amps she repairs. Two blown output transistors, and £60 repair. I'm not that confident that some other bass amps would have been repairable, or have been so easy to repair. The protection fuse stopped all four transistors going apparently. The EQ section is fantastic, and the amp is used with a Barefaced Super Twelve T, the two working together really well. The only other amp that beats if for sound that I've heard is the Genz Benz Streamliner 900, but I don't think it will handle impedance values below 4 Ohms.
7.
neeeeeee noooooor neeee nooooorrrr.......
Feel better already.
8. Perhaps we reflect the world out there. Me? Well I'm happy being daft or serious, but have times where one seems to appear more naturally . You have a point though Kiwi - more daftness required. Where's Fumps?
9. 'Twas my youngest son's 16th last night, so we set the bass rig up in the garden as a makeshift PA for music. The volume on the amp - an Eden Traveler WT550 didn't go beyond 10 o'clock and it was plenty loud enough. With a bit of cut around 160Hz and 300Hz, the sound - whilst not purest hi-fi, was actually far better than I expected. The cab likes getting some volume up before it really shines, but shine it did. Bonus.... the outside party bit ended well before 12 due to rain, so still on speaking terms with the neighbours.
10. One from the Cottingham Springboard Festival. Our guitarist, Pete, was ill, and the saxophonist also a Pete, hadn't played with us before. Not that we'd played the number before. Improvised.
11. Nothing I can possibly say will be of much use in this situation - a real bummer of massive proportions, and I wouldn't wish this on my worst enemy. I'll spread the word in any case. Good luck with tracing and getting the gear back.
12.
A Basschat meetup in Hull - in Spiders - coo, that would be great, not been there in years.
Up for that one Lozz.
13.
I didnt say it was cos I was female. It's just the way I am. Anyway, back on topic...who's up for GW's BBQ then? Sounds like a great idea to me.
Some deft logical footwork there Shell. Actually, just wondering out loud, could a BC meet up work in Hull? ***Sound of wind whistling though trees*** OK, stop flinging the tumbleweed at me. Hello.... anyone there... it's awfully echoey in here....
14. Very high latency on the initial 'GET' for the loading page. I also picked up these errors with my Safari jiggerypokery. Don't know if there's any relationship with this: ReferenceError: Can't find variable: GS_googleAddAdSenseService /:201 ReferenceError: Can't find variable: GA_googleUseIframeRendering /:372 ReferenceError: Can't find variable: GA_googleFillSlotWithSize /:2364 ReferenceError: Can't find variable: GA_googleFillSlotWithSize Edit: everything has dramatically speeded up now. 15.
The two drivers are delivering different content thanks to the crossover so phasing isn't relevant. The coaxial tweeter will influence the dispersion of the larger driver though.
Yes, I was wondering about the tweeter mini-baffle, but I notice it's positioned vertically, presumably to allow the sound to disperse horizontally from the side gaps. It would be interesting to hear a Midget and Midget T side by side, the latter operating with the tweeter turned off. Also wondering about the back reflections from this baffle, but I think the crossover frequency will be around 4 kHz. The wavelength will be around 86mm, so with a 40mm separation (guessing) from the 12' driver, the reflected waveform will emerge back out pretty much in phase. I think... I might have all this horribly wrong. There will be a frequency band over which both drivers operate, but as a crossover itself can introduce phase shifts at this merge point, use of a coaxial driver is no guarantee you won't suffer phase anomalies from another cause. There is debate as to whether crossover phase shift is even audible however. There used to be a trend for time aligned drivers on stepped baffles in hi-fi speakers, to help maintain the coherence of the apparent sound source, but I was never convinced they did anything that i could hear with any certainty.
16. Great photos guys. I think the spirit of the occasion is fully captured.
17. I would guess - and it is a guess - that placing the tweeter there is a result of rejecting alternative places on the front baffle for that design. There isn't much spare baffle area, and making another hole so close to the corner could interfere with battening and/or bracing on the inside. Alternatively it may compromise the rigidity required at the corners. The Super 12T has more room for the tweeter on the baffle, so maybe one of these factors is the cause? With a concentric tweeter you get closer to a point source for the whole sound spectrum, with the advantages of a better phase relationship between the large and small drivers, as well as a more compact design. I think the phase relationship is probably a bit academic for a bass cab though, unless you separate the tweeter and bass driver by several feet you probably wouldn't notice.
18. My first cab was a home-made (school-made really) affair with a single Fane 18", made in 1975. I think it was rated at either 120 or 140 watts. You could get enough output in the upper mids for it to slightly sparkle.
19. 12kHz. I can hear the 14kHz if I boost the signal quite a bit, but 12kHz is definitely loud enough without boosting. This is on headphones that should extend beyond 20kHz.
20.
Sorry mate.... I deliberately didn't post on Off Topic as I thought it might not be taken too seriously, especially on a Friday evening.
No problem, and I wish I'd gone your way and not posted in off topic.
21. I started a thread about this - together with a link to the regulations, and a method of compliance... although it may not be directly usable with the forum software. The thread did seem to wander off topic a little though.
22. Going purely by the specs, the Super Twelve will be slightly less sensitive in low frequency output, but will extend down just a little further - neither difference will stand out much, and I reckon you'd be pushed to notice. The Compact/Midget setup has more power handling capabilities, and will go louder, but only just - again, you may be pushed to notice. Aside from listening to compare them - which I'd really try to do before buying - it comes down to flexibility and portability. The wheels on the Super Twelve are a godsend, and make moving it about very easy. However, you can't split it like the Compact/Midget rig. On paper, I'd be looking at the cost difference and wondering very hard about what that brings. However, hearing each rig in the flesh could potentially tip it either way if your budget covers both options. They will sound different. It's all a dilemma I wouldn't mind having. If you can get down to Hull you are more than welcome to try a Super Twelve T. Edit: Posted just after Happy Jack. He is the one to listen to here, as he has the direct experience.
23.
Cheers guys i'm well chuffed......and sore lol
Stop chuffing. The soreness will clear up by itself then. Splendid stuff. Place the sore arm in a vat of spinach and all will be well. Can I have a go on the new bass sometime?
24. Excellent work there - this neatly illustrates the need for vigilance, and people who know what to do when an attack occurs. I've brought my special doffing hat out, and have doffed non-stop for 15 minutes now. My arm and wrist now ache.
