1. I wouldn't "tinker" any more. Take the quality of your sound to a whole new level and get one of the Barefaced Compacts in the FS section.
2. Risky, how so? Ampeg probably "threw" a cheapy speaker into the cab in the first place. An Eminence 15 from Blue Aran will probably be a better speaker than the original. Can the speaker be reconed? +1 for asking Eminence first.
3. We played Mustang Sally last night. We had a band of top players and it cooked. Great number and there wasn't a bum on a seat for the whole set after that.
4. CK played on 2 of my favourite numbers... You've Lost That Loving Feeling (guitar) and River Deep Mountain High (bass). Both Phil Spector productions and definitely going to my dessert island.
5. Nothing sounds like an 810. If that's what you need then that's good. For those who don't want to carry a 180lb cab there are alternatives that sound equally good out front in the audience, which is where it counts. For all it's great tone, the Ampeg 810 is the least heard (by audiences) cab. Every band I've seen using one has been Di'ed through the PA so the audience never hears the cab.
6. Picking the right covers is a fine line and it's got nothing to do with taste, integrity or musicality. But on any level, a full dance floor is a success and you should bottle whatever it is you've done to get em up. There are a lot of musicians with too much "integrity" out there in need of a crate or two!
7. I don't know much about proper pianos but I was told only buy one that's overstrung, has a metal frame and has been well looked after.
8.
....whether these little cabs can really cut it....
The world of Metal/Rock bands might be slightly different but for the rest of us, the rules have changed. You don't need 15's for bass and you don't need big cabs for volume anymore. The properly designed bass cabs around these days have changed all that. I've been gigging with 2 Bergantino 112 cabs for more than 3 years. They replaced an Epifani 410 and before that a Mesa Boogie 115 and 210 and I'm playing as loud, these days, with my "mini" rig as I did with the bigger cabs. Small, well designed cabs rule.
9. For more warmth in your sound I'd also check out the Markbass LM3 or even an Aguilar TH500.
10.
....I use 1 2 4 in the lower frets for reach 1 2 3 4 as I get up to 5th fret....
+1 I could play 1, 2, 3 but I, 2 and 4 would be my preferred fingering. It depends on what I'm playing, how the line moves and where I am on the neck. Your teacher is right 1,2 and 4 are the stronger fingers and generally involve less stretching.
11. Yep. The 55-02's use the same pickups and pre amps as the US models. There is also a 55-01 in the FS section which has Nordstrand pickups.
12. Only one guitarist I play with uses a Gibson, the rest use various Fenders and they all sound great without using Humbuckers. A very noisy (and good) guitarist in one of my bands uses a Strat with Texas Special pickups. If guys I play with are anything to go by, the most flexible way they beef up their sound is via some good pedals.
13. I'm biased, I've been playing Lakland basses for 10 years, so I'd recommend them over the others on your list. I'd look at 55-01's and, if you want the up rated pickups and pre amp, the 55-02's. I believe there are some in the FS section. They are great playing and sounding instruments, a lot of bass for the money.
14. If you like the tone of the STL 6.0 get the 9.2. It's more of the same with a much, much better and fuller low end. The SLR series doesn't sound anything like the amp you have.
15. It doesn't matter what the amp is rated at, it could be a million watts, it's the volume you're putting through the cabs that counts. So, just because you want to use a higher rated amp why will that make you play it louder than your current amp? You don't say anything about running out of power with your current amp, so given that most people who up rate their amp will stay at the same volume, the extra watts will only give you more headroom, which will get you better tone and give the amp an easier work out in the process. Anyway you were probably running your 600 watt amp at a lot less than half power so your cabs won't be in any danger.
16. For those who are unlucky in love.... Diesel Doug and the Long Haul Truckers, If I'd Shot Her When I Met Her (I'd Be Out Of Jail By Now).
17.
....I saw Tony McPhee in Otley a couple of years ago. He was dire....
I believe he wasn't in the best of health back then.
18. You blew up an Ashdown as well? What do you do to your amps? That's more failures than I've had in 40 years. If it still has a problem I'd get them to fix it properly. How much do you pay a year for your cover?
19. I used to play an Ampeg SVT3PRO that had a very nice fat, punchy tone. Don't believe stories about low volume. If you run the master full on and, in my case, the gain never went over half. That was more than enough to keep up with very loud bands through my Mesa Boogie cabs.
20. Sometimes satisfied. Never happy. Even if I can fool other people I always know that I can do better.
21. According to posts on Talkbass, the PF800 has the same tone but better (because of the extra headroom) and no reliability problems. Several years in and the PF500 still appears to be having failures. I don't know why Ampeg doesn't try to save some of it's reputation and just withdraw the PF500.
22.
....I'd always put one in when selling and always assume I won't get one when buying - saves any potential disappointment....
+1
