A Tale of International Shipping
tubbybloke68 replied to hiram.k.hackenbacker's topic in General Discussion
Blimey what a nightmare but glad it came good in the end. I put my Stanley Clarke deluxe up for sale on the alembic FB page early last year, I stipulated U.K. only sale but a guy from Corsica wanted it so badly I relented and agreed. He asked me to send it fedex express which I did. First and only time I’ve ever done it and boy was I nervous but it was delivered ahead of schedule in 2.5 days undamaged. What a relief that was, and reading this guess I was very lucky but not sure I’d do it again after hearing this 🙁 -

£700 is an awful lot for a thunder II A in my humble opinion x

There’s an Ibanez musician for £700 on bass players U.K. market place, the seller’s probably on here aswell I’d have thought. If you want Japanese 80’s quality get that if it’s still available, streets ahead of a westone and most Arias. Just a thought best of luck x

I’ve really got into Sterlings recently (USA ones) fantastic compact basses with wonderful necks.cut through the mix more than stingrays too I reckon. Enjoy your new bass, certainly am with mine 🤘

I always wanted a ric as my bass playing hero (Geddy) was playing one at the time, then I went to the music fair (Earl’s Court) I think and all my illusions were shattered when i finally got to sit down and try to play one.Absolutely alien ergonomics , for me anyway! I was hugely disappointed that it wasn’t right for me, but you can’t deny there’s nothing quite like them look wise, and even non musicians still’ notice’ them.Hats off to the people that can play them and make them sound good! I agree that to me, Geddys Wal sounds weren’t what I would call’ the typical sound’ associated with the brand, but hey ho it shows how versatile they are I guess.I’ve heard it said that Wals are no good for slapping, but totally disagree on that one. Id really like to try the newer rics, they certainly look as though they would be more comfortable and yet still retain some of the iconic look about them.would be interested to hear any thoughts from owners of these?

Maybe I’m old fashioned, I don’t know but I find them all so bland, still think the musician and the roadster series’s with the 2x2 headstock’s were beautifully styled, amazing build quality and most importantly sounded and still sound brilliant to this day.I’m sure there would be a market for a re issue of some sort. The modern range is almost too much imo

Personally I find being passive is in no way a disadvantage on a Wal. i have the same model as above and an early pro II. They have’ that sound’ in spades and are the ones I tend to gravitate towards. I really hope you enjoy your new acquisition , good on ya ! x

Basses better investment than banks!
tubbybloke68 replied to spacecowboy's topic in General Discussion
Thanks for an interesting thread, I’d say anyone who is lucky enough to own a Wal bass that was brought anywhere from years ago up until fairly recently are sitting on probably one of the best investments bass wise.Guess people can never know how much something will rise in value until later.Hindsight is a wonderful thing!! I generally try to only buy a bass that I THINK will go up in value ,because as someone pointed out it’s a privilege and pleasure to play and enjoy being the temporary custodians first and foremost.Anything else is a bonus isn’t it? certainly wish I’d never have sold my first house and had taken the risk to try to invest more in property.🤣x -
Sold - 1979 Ibanez Musician MC-900 - £1000
tubbybloke68 replied to Burns-bass's topic in Basses For Sale
Funny you reference a Wal because I’ve always thought I can get my mc924 to sound very similar to one and after playing a Wal the Ibanez feels almost like a medium scale, the reach seems so much less. wonderful wonderful basses as someone else has pointed out definitely the‘golden era’ for ibby basses in my humble opinion.mines going to the grave with me I think. good luck with the sale 😊 -
My very first decent bass I brought years ago from rock bottom In Croydon.certainly brings back memories.cracking basses.enjoy 😁

I’d say a genz benz streamliner 900 has a fair amount of heft for a lightweight job , with a barefaced big twin cab
-
Paul Herman uses them on all new Wals unless someone specifically asks for different.when they’re good enough for him then its good enough for me!!

Hi, apologies if someone else has already asked but any experiences /feedback would be appreciated please? Build quality/real world volume etc.I’ve been using a Tecamp puma 900 for the last 5 years which is an amazing little thing I have to say, just intrigued about these British built amps. Thanks in advance folks x

It takes serious money to be a struggling musician
tubbybloke68 replied to Al Krow's topic in General Discussion
The thing is ,when you have a privileged background and money in the family it enables you to be able to spend your time developing your creativity and talent (if you have any) because you don’t need to earn with a ‘normal job’ to survive. They’ve always got that ‘cushion’ of an advance from the family. Most of us are too busy trying to keep a roof over our heads, mortgages etc to be able to doss around like that.Being from money opens a lot of doors and I think it’ll always be that way. -
