  1. could be but not when you're standing next to the sound desk
  2. I find it strange, you would think The Stranglers would have their own soundman, yet when I've seen them the bass is nowhere near that high in the mix, and it should be
  3. I think I've finally found a early live version, just audio, starts just before the 39 minute mark, It doesn't sound a lot different from his modern sound as in the last post
  4. and this is interesting, JJ's modern bass sound
  5. no it isn't but this is, or maybe not on reflection, shouldn't alway believe what's on youtube
  6. Mmm, not sure about that, but the Ramones did a lot of covers, mostly good, some not so good this is one of the best ones IMO
  7. the only thing that will make a significant difference is the type of strings, type of pick up and the position of the pick up, ymmv
  8. I picked up a pair of Fender V2's designed to go together 2 x 8 and a 1 x 10 off ebay, nano drivers so only 13 kg each and sound good, can't see me changing them
  9. I'll be very interested in hearing Rod Stewart, last few times I've seen him on TV he's avoided doing his most popular songs, presumably because he can't sing them anymore
  10. tbf that pie chart could also apply to drummers. The band did an acoustic gig on Sunday where I play guitar, no very well I might add, and a woman came up gave me a hug and kissed me on the neck, trouble was we were half way through a song and I made a right pig's ear of the rest of it. Never happens when I play bass, perhaps as well really 😂
  11. tbh I don't think that sounds much like JJ's tone, too much treble, a big boost around the 1 -2k Hz gets you nearer, the nearest I can get is using the Zoom B1on sansamp clone for distortion and various EQ
  12. I can't believe he couldn't get closer to his original bass sound if he wanted too, I can't get his original sound but I can get closer than he does these days, just listened to a live version of Hanging Around from the 'Feel It Live' album, my favourite bass sound on any record from Norvegicus, and it's a travesty
  13. as I mentioned earlier, they've got their own sound guy, so to a large extent they get the sound they want, I know different venues have their own characteristics but a decent sound man should be able to cope. I once went to a festival about 15 years ago and the sound was awful all weekend, all thump thump bass drum, the Ruts came on and their sound was spot on, Segs Jennings' bass sounded awesome, I even messaged him about it and he confirmed they had their own sound guy
  14. I do wonder how many of these changes would be noticeable in a live band situation. I always remeber asking my partner what my bass sounded like after I played a gig with a different Bass, amp and speakers, "it sounded like a bass" she replied 😂
  15. they use there own PA guy, so no excuse really, a guy I was with asked how he got the JJ bass sound, he said it's not as hard as you think, then proceeded not to get it 😆. Like @Velarian said the early bass sound had all but disapeared after the Black and White album, my favourite explanation is that the green P bass he was using broke in half (or probably 2/3rds, 1/3rd), he had if repaired but it was never the same again, I saw a quote somewhere where's he played hundreds of P's since but never found one that sounded the same
  16. but true, I think anyway, certainly last time I saw them about 3 years ago
  17. shouldn't worry too much, he can't get it anymore
  18. songs from another band with our name suddenly appeared on our Spotify page, I filled out a form and sent it off, credit where it's due, they soon sorted it out edit, I think we were the originals, we started out in 1980
  19. https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-14411465/hated-delivery-firm-lose-22-000-parcels-today.html
  20. the moment Brexit gets mentioned it's gets political, and some folk can't get political without getting abusive, if you want to discuss politics (or Brexit) I suggest you head over to Fretboard's Politics and Economics thread
  21. £75 is a good price, I've been using one for about 3 years now, for gigs and practice, so gets used about 80 times a year for 2 hours usually, battery is still ok, the only issue I've had is it does cut out if you lose line of site
  22. from what is being said on here you need to be careful about the cab you pair with the ELf https://www.facebook.com/photo?fbid=10171642807440227&set=gm.10161191512266247&idorvanity=9747906246
  23. Noel is usually good value in interviews
  24. the Beatles had great songwriters, that's the difference, if you're going to compare todays successful artists with those of yesterday year Elvis would be nearer the mark
