1.
sorry nothing to add, cept i enjoyed the Purple Helmets also, no nonsense covers with JJ on bass I got nice n sleazy in the set of 2 bands i played with last year, but both dropped it after a few gigs, seems not as well known as I thought it was Was fun to play a few times though
perhaps it would have been more popular if you'd used the strippers on stage like the Stranglers did On the subject of the early bass sound I also read an interview somewhere with JJ where he said he could never get the same sound once he'd broken the green P in half while punching it during a gig. Perhaps he did get it repaired but it also repaired the fault thet gave it it's distintive sound?
2.
What's the warning for? You being an idiot?
cheers for that, my guess is most bassists on here will know who the idiot is with a comment like that
3. similar thing happened to me, except it was after we'd done our slot, I was asked if the main band could borrow my amp, sorry I said I've got to go, the main band just had to go through the PA. So if you decide you don't want to do it just say your cat's ill or something and you've got to go, If anybody lends out gear it should be the last band
4. all these posts just go to show what a broad church punk has become, but for me, old enough to have been there when punk broke, it's the Ramones that do it for me, fast melodic songs stripped down to the bare essentials, after all they were the first true punk band, weren't they?.
5.
Inspired by Bilbo, I have nothing but respect for mans love for his music. So i thought i would share my love Punk, i love the urgency i love the speed i love the way i feel when i hear a bass line played in hyper-speed with a nice palm muted guitar over the top and most of all i love the "this is what i play if you don't like it f*ck off " attitude of it all.
that type of thing is exactly why punk was invented, god is there anything more boring than a bass or drum solo
6.
Without wanting to be the devil on yr shoulder, as opposed to the angel, do it - you know you want to. Think the humble P Bass has always been popular, but that many people after having tried this bass, these features, that manufacturer etc, come to the realisation that what is special about the P Bass is in fact it`s simplicity, and the way that it just sits in the mix so well. Many other basses sound far better on their own, but in a band context the P Bass just works so well.
+1
7.
Plenty of Rays in punk!
not the old school variety, the ray's just sounds too polite, the P fills the sound out better especailly when there's only one guitarist, to my ears anyway, each to their own as they say.
8. sorry lads, sold my Ray and bought a P never looked back, mind you I do play in a Punk band
9. I've got elixirs on my P, about a year old, fraying and discoloured but still don't sound dull
10.
Stop listening to Level 42.
+1
11. remember reading a story once of how George Formby was such a crap Ukulele player he had a stash of them all tuned differently so he could use the same fingering on every song, makes you think eh?
12.
It doesn't really matter since you can never hear the bass player anyway. Just get a cheap one. Unless you want a special-sounding bass for doing YouTube play-a-long videos.
If you buy a cheap bass no one will hear you cause they don't cut through in a band situation
13. but the occasional good one makes up for all the bad ones, doesn't it?
14. once read a interview with J J and he said he'd tried hundreds of P's and never got the sound he got with the green one he broke in half, and I don't think he ever has got the sound he got on the first 3 Stranglers albums, so it was a fluke IMO the green P had a flaw in it that made it sound like that and that's probably the reason it broke in half!
15. also try www.we7.com same thing but no need to download any software
16.
The formula is (impedance of cab 1 X impedance of cab 2) / (impedance of cab 1 + impedance of cab 2). So, 2.667 ohms (roughly). With cabs that are the same impedance, you'd use the following: impedance of single cab / number of cabs = total impedance So, for instance if you had 3 x 16 ohm cabs (why on earth you would is another matter) you'd get 5.3 ohms (roughly).
Thanks
17. sorry to hi jack the thread but it is relevent, if using 2 x 4 ohm cabs gives you a 2 ohm load, what would 1 x 4 ohm cab and 1 x 8 ohm cab give you?
18.
And if you ever play with a plectrum, the coating gets worn and frayed pretty quickly.
It does, but it doesn't seem to effect the sound, all the gunge that the coating keeps out comes from the fingers not the pick
19. Elixer nanoweb, expensive but last ages, really smooth because of the coating, should cure your blister trouble
20. the only pedal I use is a Zoom 506II, I use it to add a touch of distortion all the time, it's got a built in tuner and I get a resonable over distorted sound for Ace of Spades, not everyones cup of tea but it floats my boat
21. anybody out there got the bass tab for the Stones version of I wanna Be Your Man, cheers
22. I just plug my bass into my computer mic in, headphones in the out socket then use the bass's volume control, use audacity to play the song you're learning so you can slow it down, it works and it's cheap
23. the way I do it is to plug my bass into my computer mic input, turn the volume down on your bass and plug headphones into you soundcard out socket, then use audacity to play the track through so I can slow it down alter the pitch that sort of thing, simple, and won't cost a thing, asuming you've got a computer
24. I was going to do a poll but it somehow didn't work out, I started on guitar but swiched when I realised there was a much better chance of getting in a band, glad I did, wouldn't switch back but it's useful for songwriting
25. prompted by the comment in the show "the worst guitarist finished up playing bass"
