1. I had one a couple of years back. Loved it, but sold it and bought a Ric. Now I've got another, and the Ric is gone! I've never been a big Jazz man, had a CV in the meantime. Just find the Ged has a quality all of it's own. Just get something from playing it that I've never replicated in any other bass. I'm a big fan of Ged as well, love the way his Jazz cuts right through the mix. Had a black one first, now got the sunburst which looks absolutely gorgeous! Bought the latest one 2nd hand - it was a local guy who was selling on E-bay, so got to see it before I paid. Only a few months old with a pro set-up.....good deal and a great bass.
2. Martin Sims - http://www.simscustom.com Based near Bethersden, about 10 minutes outside of Ashford. I used to have 2 Rics (both gone now), but he set up both excellently last year. At the time I went in, he was doing some work with a chap's Ric that he'd couriered from the US for Martin's services. Tell him Iain from Tenterden with the Rickenbackers sent you!
3. If you use MP3, use a high quality dock. The B&W Zeppelin is superb. Had mine nearly a year, and well worth the extra £££. I use nothing except MP3, having sold all vinyl and CD before it becomes landfill. Depressing, but I think that's where we're headed. If not, I'd have stuck with the physical stuff. Only thing I miss is the cover art and sleevenotes, but that's a small price for the extra space. Quality may suffer in places, but as the ears deteriorate, it'll be hard to tell the difference anyway!
4. I think it was Phil Jupitus that once described Bob Dylan's vocal style sounding like 'somebody hoovering'!!
5. Bump for a very nice looking bass! I too can vouch for Tom as an A1 man to deal with. Hope you get better soon - maybe you should keep this one! Really hope things will improve for you soon.
6. Sunday bump - no P-bass love in the South East or beyond? £150 off new price for a brand new bass!
7. I've had a 2009 Ged, and now have a 2011, and the standard ones seem fine to me.
8. Smash It Up by The Damned?
9. I used to have flats on my 4003. It never sounded any good with rounds - just too treble-y for some reason. With flats, sounded terrible by itself, but superb in band context.
10. Was £480, now £450 - no offers, cash and collect only. As new bass, only one for sale around here!
11. I saw him in March, and it was the best live bass sound I've ever heard - growled like a monster, clear, precise....totally JJB!
12. Week and a bit bump - should have bump'd this sooner! Very light, and as new...only 12 weeks old.
13. Don't forget that Geddy has played and recorded with his $200 Pawn Shop Jazz for years. Good advert for keeping it cheap!
14. +1 on the Geddy. But 2 years ago, the were about £650 tops. Now they are close to £900 for the sunburst! I bought a 50s MIM Precision this year - which on the basis of many opinions, comes across very well vs. the Am. Std, and a fair bit cheaper. I sold my original Geddy, but recently bought another because they're great - Sunburst, 2nd hand (couple of months old and totally as new) for £600. 2nd hand is a good way to go, or just research the bass for you. I know my days of blowing £1800 on Rics are very much over....the differences between so many basses really isn't that much, IMHO.
15. I've read the 50's RI is identical to the Road Worn without the damage! Don't know how true that is, but they are both MIM, and both very light indeed!
16. Bit of a PS here - took the Ged to rehearsal last night. Used the info given here, and from a similar topic over on TB. Difference was astounding - like a different bass. Loads of top, middle and bottom. Really cut through whatever the 2 guitarists threw at it. A small tweak of the bass control and amp EQ.....total transformation, and heaps of presence. Proves what a bass the Jazz is....the Ged now safely re-instated as my no.1 bass around!
17. Ohhh...it's very light indeed, probably the lightest bass I've played. I'd guess around 8kg? Compared to my Geddy, it's a feather. Don't know if anyone can give the exact weight? it's not on the Fender site. But believe me, it's very light for a bass!
18. Fender 50's Precision, MIM. Black with gold pickguard. Condition is as new. Less than 3 months old - only played around the house. No dinks, dents, marks or anything. Just a few, less than 1mm surface marks on pickups that were on them when it came brand new from Soundslive. I'm being over-picky here - but they are the only, even slight marks on this beauty! Comes with new and unused Fender deluxe padded gig bag. Re-strung with D'addario Nickels, 45-105. Pick-up only on this - located in Tenterden in Kent. These are just over £600 new - I'm looking for around £..now £450. Please drop me a PM if interested...or call 0784 770 4422 (mobile reception not great all the time - so please leave a voicemail and I'll get back to you). I did put this on a few weeks back, but never bumped it up due to wanting to keep it! However, this time it has to go....
19. Already got the Lemmy film on DVD (loads of great extras if you get it). Recorded the Hawkwind programme, so will tuck into that over the weekend. Sounds like good viewing.
20. I too really like Geddy's bass tone. Wish I could cut through like that!
21. One on E-bay in the UK last year didn't sell for about £2500 or less! I was watching it (not to buy, just for interest) and couldn't believe it. It was a really nice example as well.
22. Many thanks for all the suggestions. I can give the ideas a try - I was just a little surprise as how easy the Precision cut right through both guitars compared to the Jazz. Maybe should just stick to the P - it was like a sledgehammer! The Jazz being more polite, as has been mentioned above, probably better in a 'one guitar' situation....maybe that's why I've not seen masses of loud dual guitar bands featuring Jazz-playing basses? Prepare myself for a list now of which I'm bound to be corrected!!!
23. Thanks all for that. I'm mostly a pick-player, so I'll roll that bridge back a bit and adjust the tone as described. Any suggestions on what I can do with the Markbass EQ on the amp? Everything at 12?
