1. I'd love to know how much the Ged's differ in tone from a standard 70s Jazz bass? I suppose the closest 'new' version would be the AV '74?
2. I really like the sound of these. Saw some YouTube clips where it nails the 'Tom Sawyer' tone - which for years I thought was Ged's Ricky...!
3. Cool! Have a great time, sounds nice and relaxed.
4. 1, and it was made in 1974! Have got a little GAS though - as I should invest in a backup/another bass.
5. I remember a corker some years back - a muso wanted ad, with the sign-off, 'no dickheads'! It made me laugh - or imagine some poor player thinking somewhere 'that's the band for me - but as I am dickhead, I'd better not apply'!
6. I always mean to check them out - it's just their name which has always deterred me!
7. Great news - wishing you all the best!
8. Now filled - first gig tonight with our new sticksman!
9. I thought the RTB mix sounds quite good! Can't wait for the album/DVD.
10. This is now sold - sadly not through BC!
11.
Are you handy for London? They're on at the Borderline on Wednesday October 7th. http://www.ticketweb.../event/YGB0710Y
I think it's the original frontman and drummer, and two newer recruits. Probably a good show, though. Shame that the original Ricky-touting bassist, Derek 'Mo' Moore isn't still with them.
12. I must admit, didn't really know much about this band, except for a photo of Ian Curtis from Joy Division wearing one of their t-shirts. Started doing some digging and listening, and I'm impressed. I suppose it's progressive, but I think there's an awful lot going on. I believe they were based in Germany - I think I detect a little of the 'Krautrock' genre in the mix too. There's some tasty bass stuff on there as well. I gave their live album from '74 a whirl yesterday, and it was quite a revelation. Just nice to hear something exciting - even though it's about 40 years old.....! They seem to be a band that kind of slipped under the radar - you never see their name or albums cropping up in features. Got some more to discover, and I'm looking forward to the rest of the journey!
13. I probably listen to a good 2 hours a day, always have done.
14. I've been enjoying 'Bar Rescue' on the tele - US bars do appear to be quite different indeed to our boozers over here.
15. Got it on to record tonight. Not expecting much, but it's still music on TV...... Surely this series has to feature U2, one (or more) or the brothers' Gallagher's latest projects, or Coldplay? Those guys really need the exposure, we really don't hear enough about them.
16. I must admit, I have close in recent months. Just dissatisfaction with bands/gigs/musicians. Music has always been my life - social life, what fills up my head all day. I started to think how, or if, I could live without it - and wondered how much I do it because of the love of it, or simply because it's just 'what I do'? I've played with other musicians for nearly 30 years, started jamming at 11...so all my life, really. I feel the band and gig scene has definitely shrunk, and the opportunities are less. However, I think you can reach a point when you feel like you've done it all - I could play the same gigs for another 10 years, and they'll be still screaming for Mustang....! Like you've reached as far as it'll go, and it's just an endless loop of repetition after that....with a Mustang soundtrack. As has been mentioned - do you play anything just to be out there playing? Or do you fill your time with something else? Bad patch, I hope....
17. Saw this the other day on BBC, and it's also on the iPlayer - http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/search?q=Van%20Morrison%20-%20Up%20on%20Cyprus%20Avenue TBH, I enjoyed it. I've not listened to much Van in years, this has pushed me into catching up! Typical BBC, though - the camera spends a lot of time showing the hipsters in the audience, and Cerys Matthews. Oh dear! Van's band is relatively stripped down, and the certainly are a crack-hot bunch. Bassist plays electric and upright - not showy, but it's pretty tasty and fits in to perfection. All (I think, or most) of his back catalogue has been made available on the streaming sites in the last week or so (great news for subscribers like me!) so I might start digging a bit more of old Van The Man!
18. Indeed! http://classicrock.teamrock.com/news/2015-09-09/lemmy-makes-live-motorhead-comeback
19. Nektar - 'Sounds Like This' Double album, got it all - some tasty bass too, from Derek 'Mo' Moore.
20. I really hope he's back on track. I've read some Motorhead forum stuff, in which quite a few are seeing the end of the touring band in sight. I'm 50/50 on this - I've been a fan since '87, I hope Lem will be back, but even I was left speechless when he started to sing 'Ace Of Spades' when they played 'Overkill' at Glasto! Thought they sounded good besides that. Was it a tech glitch - or was did he really think it sounded okay? I just get concerned when bands start to regularly cancel, and the excuses start to come out - sickness, lung infection.....makes you wonder if there's more to it. I sincerely hope not - I'd rather see them continue in the studio knocking out brilliant albums like the new one (their best for a good few years - and I've loved the recent ones) than continue to tour and slowly decline. Lem sounds great on the new songs. ....and I've just ordered my 'new album' t-shirt! Let's hope that normal service is resumed.
21. I was watching the 'Standing In The Shadows Of Motown' film last night. I found it interesting when they mentioned the tone of the drums - the fact that even they had a 'tone' or 'note' to them. I find that pretty much most, if not all, modern productions leave me cold - they all sound to me like they've been made in either an aircraft hanger (wide and spacious, no feeling), or that everything is squashed together (love Rush, and the album, but step forward 'Clockwork Angels'). Modern drums go puffffttt, and cymbals shhhhhttt, whereas we all know proper cymbals go tssssst! There's science here, chaps! ....and that's before the modern bass tones - no definition. Rant over!
22. Certainly some awesome playing going on there. Must admit, I'm not keen on his tone (sacrilege, I'm sure) - and the less said about that pointy monstrosity in his hands the better...sorry Ox fans!
23. Great player, still inspires.
24. Just read this on the NME site. Very upsetting indeed. I just hope it ends well - Lem back on his feet doing what he does best - even if it means touring a little less. Lem is one of the reasons I picked up a bass, and remains so. A great rock 'n' roll band - pure and simple. On a happier note, the new album, 'Bad Magic' is awesome. It's certainly one of my faves of the last 10 years. They sound like a band 40 years younger. Maybe he could spend more time in the studio? I can't see it though, as Lem himself once said, if you're not gigging, you can't call yourself a band!
