1. Is it the one for sale in Bass Direct?
2. Not a lot - I bought a small toolbag from Amazon a couple of years back, as beforehand, I just to stuff it all in my hardcase! Now I always take spare leads, picks, tuner, screwdriver set, earplugs, stand - all fits in the bag. Never carry spare strings, though.....banking on the fact that flats live forever.....!
3. Both my basses are 42 years old, and have been re-fretted, and have had other minor repairs along the way. Doesn't bother me at all, as they are both working and gigging instruments. Didn't buy them to leave them under the bed! One needed a bit of work to bring it back to full health as it had lay unused for quite some time - but was well played in it's lifetime. Personally - I can't speak for the older Fenders - but a vintage Rickenbacker does both feel, and sound different to a new one. Pickups, construction...but it's all down to personal choice. Great to have the option!
4.
Am i wrong Spongebob.? it won't be the first time.
Not a man of your great taste! Super choices. I believe Chaka recorded her version very soon after (maybe even at the same time) as AWB's 'Shine' came out in '80, CK's version in April '81. I think I need to get out more.......!
5. Great band, love all the albums (except Cupids In Fashion!). They all just get better the more you live with them. The track, 'Watcha Gonna Do For Me?' was recorded by AWB first, and is actually a Hamish Stuart co - write. Good call, it's a corker.
6.
... and in other news, Paul Kantner dead.
Sad news. A very talented player and writer. Listening to the Woodstock gig again, I'm just awestruck at the performance - played in the morning, so no massive light-shows or pyrotechnics (don't think there was any of that at that weekend!), it's just a great band really working it....songs being stretched out, but retaining vitality and power. JC on fire. In the days where the Glasto headliners 'show' is almost bigger than the songs themselves, it is quite sad, an era and idealism in music from a time long gone that we're unlikely to ever experience again.
7. Nice score, George - gotta love a MB!
8. Motorhead - Another Perfect Day. Always been a strong contender for one of their very best for me. Can you beat this for an album opening? That tone! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q4wMn21DePs
9. This thread got me seriously listening to some 'Airplane. I'd heard a bit, some years back, not enough to grab me. Went straight in with the studio albums, and have also been hearing some of the live stuff too. I must say, what an amazing band. The Woodstock performance is pretty stunning, as is some of the stuff from the Filmore, too. Storming stuff...and Jack's playing is so driving - what a tone.
10. What an abomination of spelling! Premium basses? Ideally vintage???? I'm not sure who's got the bigger problem - the writer of the ad, or the individual that replies to him!
11.
As opposed to a passive bassist?
Very good! Although strictly speaking, my basses are passive.....!
12. I've been a member since around 2008, and always take a look most days. Don't always post, but make sure I catch up on what's going on. As an active bassist, I don't see any reason why I wouldn't want to keep on Basschatting....music and playing has always been my main interest in life. I've bought and sold, been helped many times, and have also (fingers crossed) been of help at some points too. I just avoid OT! The only other bass forum I frequent is Rickresource - not a place for the faint-hearted!
13.
he did explain it to me but I don't really understand but he said it was no good. It adjusts very slightly but then slips back
I bought a USA Jazz bass a few years back. It was when they introduced the Custom Shop pup upgrades (2012?), and a dealer was selling this off cheaper, as old stock. The bass had the same problem as the OP's - adjust truss rod, only for neck to keep returning to it's 'original' position. Upshot was, Fender took the bass back, put on a new neck, full set up, and couriered the bass back to me for free. Excellent service from Fender. However, I'm not a Fender guy, and so the bass was sold on. The new owner got a beauty after all the work!
14. Here's another one - wrap some plumbers PTFE tape around the thread, and screw back in. Did this on one of mine recently after seeking similar advice - works a treat!
15. Very sad. Always loved Mott - although I was only born the year they split. I even had a letter printed in Kerrang! in the early 90's asking for a Mott discography (pre-internet of course), so I could (and did) collect all of their records. Great albums. Also a talented producer for the Peel show for many years as well. I'm cranking up 'Brain Capers' as I write. Timeless music which will never grow old.
16. Love Jaco, had trouble getting the DVD as they kept pushing the UK release date back. I bit the bullet, and ordered the blu-ray from Amazon US - good price as it turned out. Got it in under a week. Lo and behold, it finally was available in on the UK site 3 days after mine arrived. ....and I've not even watched it yet!! Got my long weekend from work this week, and we're not gigging, so it's going to be a Jaco-fest chez Spongebob!
17. Used to gig this in a covers band a few years back. Band were all really happy when we finally perfected it - good fun song to play.
18. Both, but it's the music first - the piece has to be right musically for me to worry too much about the lyrics. You can have a track with the best words around, but if it's musically awful, it's bad....but there's plenty of musically great tracks with terrible lyrics....!
19. When I had 'new' basses, I always tried to keep them as nice as possible. Now both my basses are old/used/vintage, I treat them the same. However, a knock would be now less noticeable given the fact that they've been played for 42 years! One is more knocked than the other, and that's more the gigging bass. At least all the relic'ing is genuine!
20. Fender 9050 flats are the business. I've never been happier with a string, and I used nickels for years beforehand.
21. 'Lemmy - The Movie' is getting another showing this Friday on BBC 4, worth a look if you've not seen it. My telly guide described it as a film about 'the late Motorhead frontman'. I still can't get used to seeing the words 'Lemmy' and 'late' together...I always thought he'd outlive most of us. Still a shock....but we'll always have the records and the gigs.
22.
Justify having more than one ? I'm saying nothing
Oh go on, please.....!
23. I haven't got any Fenders, but I am in the '2 of the same bass' camp if that helps. Mine are both strung with the same Flats, as well. My justification is that, a) I'm an enthusiast of 4001 basses before the pickup changed position, rarity as they get older means I had to grab whilst I could, and lastly, c) If anything happens to one of them, I can lock the other one away so I'll always own one of my dream basses!
24. Glad you got it sorted! I had the same from City Link a few years back. Supposed to be collecting - waited all day, nothing. Contacted them the next, only to be told that there was no-one in, and the driver left a card. Problem was, they never came, and never left a card, either! Eventually drove to the nearest depot to drop the bass off. Never used them again!
25. I have bad points as well, like so many others on here. When the band had a bit of a crisis last year, I had a time of thinking if it ended, I'd give up, as I couldn't face starting with another band from scratch again - not that I could even see a band that was worth joining. I've no intention in doing the same old for the sake of it. However, got some new blood, and it seems to have taken off again. I also had a call out of the blue to dep with a band before Christmas (I used to be in a band with their guitarist), and had a good time with them....having played in the same band for over 3 years, it was refreshing to kind of play away from home a bit! So from 6 months ago - we've got a reinvigorated band, a dep gig which has led to the possibility of joining another, and I'm having another old bass restored. Hang in there - if it's supposed to happen, it will. Things have a habit of turning up when you need them.
