1. Ah, bugger it - I must admit I did expect it to do a little better than it did! And the buyer is a local guy so I won't even make a couple of quid on postage! Well, you win some, you lose some. Stew - you should've made me an offer! The other Franconia is medium-scale, as far as I can tell - and to be quite honest they're a bit sh!t - I'd keep an eye on that rather nice-looking Columbus (270192460249) & see if you can talk the seller into posting it. J.
2. Sounds like you want a Pickguardian replacement: http://www.pickguardian.com/pickguardian/R...dgePUPlate.html Or just knock up your own out of a bit of 3mm acrylic & silver card, like wot I done on my Rickenbugger: I'd happily gig that Pink Thing - I look enough of a twat anyway. J.
3. That ten-string looks to be strung with very light strings, maybe a 4-string bass set & a set of guitar strings - I'm pretty sure the top 3 look unwound. Probably why it hasn't snapped in half. Wonder where you get guitar strings as long as that? And how is that pickup wired, that it needs 2x volume & 3x tone controls? J.
4. Never seen one of those before! Thanks for posting that - first pink Rickenfaker I've ever seen. And yes - I definitely would gig with it! And it just gets better - it's called the "Sw***y Spider"! Brilliant! (btw why the fark is the autocensor upset by that? What a silly bunt.) Doesn't bear much relation to the "real" thing beyond the body shape - but that's probably enough to get uncle John Hall twisting his gusset in outrage! J.
5.
Though to be fair to the seller, he's not actually selling it as an Ibanez.
I'd hazard a guess that's because one or two people have pointed out to him that it isn't one. I can't think of any "Lawsuit" era J copies (except possibly Tokai) with a rosewood board & dots - they all seemed to copy the late 60s/70s types with block inlays. Later MIJ copies - non-export ones, like Feranandes, Yamaha, Greco etc featured dot boards - but I really doubt if this is one! J.
6.
Ive just seen this on ebay, he says its a Japanese. An Ibanez Jazz copy. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/JAPAN-JAZZ-BASS-DEAL...1QQcmdZViewItem
Nothing about that suggests it's anything other than a generic cheapo J copy with a period-incorrect Ibanez transfer slapped on it. Worth bearing in mind, no Ibanez copy had that style of logo, ever. J.
7. That seller has some absolutely bonkers stuff - this one's comparatively sane: http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-LEFT-HANEDED-DOUBL...emZ190122088384 If it was right-handed, with a lined fretless 5 & fretted four, and had the fretless neck on top, I'd be interested! As it is, I guess I'll just have to build my own! Jon.
8. Just when it looked like this once-vivacious thread had flatlined - A Shaftesbury 360-shaped semi, made by Eko, demonstrating its unsuitability for hammering in fenceposts: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...em=280179422808 Not exactly sure what you're meant to do with the jack socket. J.
9. A whole bunch of Westones today. The ubiquitous Thunder 1 - this time, in red: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...em=300178066800 A Speccy: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...em=260188879129 And a Concord: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...em=160186341269 A surprisingly nice looking Columbus Jazz: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...em=270192460249 And some more tomorrow, I'd imagine. J.
10. If it were me, I'd feel inclined to bodge it with a bit of a matchstick, or suchlike. It sounds like it only needs something inserted against the flat face for the grub screw to bite upon. Jon.
11.
Well, my 1974 MapleGlo Fretless 4001 came from the Bay, and I was VERY happy to pay the eBay price - seeing as it was rather less than half the bass's true value.
Excellent - pics in the porn thread? Occasionally one slips through - I've had a few steals where either the listing stayed inexplicably invisible, or the person didn't know what they had. Don't know if anything amongst tonight's lot fits that description, though: Odd/wrecked P/J thing, attracting attention because the neck looks like it's from an early Ibby Blazer / Cimar Stinger. Appears to have had a refin in boot polish: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...em=320188787471 Back for a quick & cynical attempt to cash in, that electrically gutted Westy Thunder IIA from last week: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...em=260187748382 A very nice '83 Ibby "Roastar" II series". Must be hot stuff. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...em=320189061506 An unbranded Gibson Grabber copy - actually I don't think this is JapCrap - I think it's an Italian Melody. Either way, it's trashed & the chancer still wants £125 for it. And it's an Ibanez, despite the fact they never made one: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...em=140185202554 A somewhat more honest Vantage project - not sure what this is (but it ain't a Westone!), might be a VS-695. If the neck's straight & the frets are decent it might be worth a punt as a fixer-upper: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...em=140184613775 A tidy-looking but overpriced Satellite P clone: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...em=280178788467 And one for Bloodaxe - more pointy than a barrel full of porcupines, it's an Aria ProII ZZB Deluxe: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...em=120190530565 Jon.
12.
Oh it happens from time to time ...
What've you done, Jack? You can tell me.... J.
13. Most of 'em are, though! I did mean to post it in there as well, forgot, and then it ran out... I think the Rickenfaker thread was better as a discussion of all things Rick-shaped & a bit shonky, rather than just being for Ebay listings - they're way too few & far between. Doubt if anyone on here would pay Ebay prices anyway. J.
14. Hi Cam - the Ibby's an MC800NT, here's a pic in the 1979 catalogue, it shows the dark stained version - yours is the natural finish: http://www.ibanez.ru/info/catalog/1979/11.jpg As far as value's concerned, with these things it's what someone will pay, and what you're asking doesn't seem unreasonable for UK market/Ebay prices for a Musician. Yours is an unusual model (from the catalogue archives, it looks like '79 was the only year this model was available) and I've not seen a Musician series bass in a natural finish before. Yours has been defretted & no longer has its original pup & trc, which might make a difference to a collector. Jon.
15. And tonight we have: Blimey - it's a Rick copy! Where the hell did that come from? Japan, obviously. The little generic JapCrap tuners combined with through neck suggests a product from the Rokkoman/Maya concern. Yours for an eye-watering £445 or higher. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...em=120187827708 And a couple of EB-0 copies., one in bits, and the other to be kicked to bits if anyone's dumb enough to pay the £80 fine: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...em=290186147497 http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...em=140184268323 And a nice (but a little spoiled) rarity for the Matsuholics among us - a Vantage VS or VP something-or-other (there's not much info out there), defretted, bridge changed (should be a Gibbo 3 point type) and it looks like the finish stripped. Still very lovely, and the seller assures us it's made of actual wood! http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...em=200178207220 Next, a rather delicious Ibanez MC924 Musician: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...em=140184150915 An early 80s Hondo H1015 original design - two parts EB-0 and one part P: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...em=220177129548 And here's a piece of history in a couple of different ways - a 60s Yamaha SB7A. I think this was once one of PaulC/Arrowhead's massive SBV collection, I think I remember him getting a vintage one with Jazz pups & tidying it up somewhat: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...em=220177429661 And finally, conspicuous by its absence over the last few days - a Wetone Thunder 1, only this time with a cunning difference - it's black. Making it a Thunder Jet, I believe. Don't know if the "hardcase" part of the item description means you better hadn't look at it funny or spill its pint: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...em=110199292474 J. Edit - what the hell does this board do to your links when you edit a post?
16. "CURSE YOU, RED BARON!!!" J.
17. Did you see this one? http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/BUBINGA-BASS-NECK_W0...emZ170171959211 Warmoth neck, J profile (the seller says) bubinga, Schaller tunas & a nice non Fender headstock. You'll have to be quick, though - runs out in 5hrs. Jon.
18. Amazing how something so incredibly expensive can look so much like an occasional table with strings on. Jon.
19. Bit quiet on the Bay of Fleas for a Sunday night. Hang on - I'm sure I said that last week. A Maya Jazz - not exactly pristine, original, well-photographed or indeed described in any recognizable dialect: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...em=330192725012 A Columbus "Base" - which looks identical to the Grant-branded horror with which I began my bassing life, back when dinosaurs ruled the Earth & Ronnie James Dio was in his 40s. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...em=150187819990 And well, I'm not exactly sure what this thing is, or was - but the optimism's kinda touching: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...em=110198627546 J.
20. Wot - no Mark King? JJ Burnel Peter Steele Tom Araya & I've done it meself in a couple of bands... Jon.
21.
fact what were they thinking with that headstock? otherwise i like it and the statue in the background
I particularly like the novelty stand the one on the front of the manufacturer's website is displayed upon. I'd quite like one of those for each of my basses. J.
22. It's a later Hondo (post "lawsuit" headstock) & they'd improved quality a bit by the end of the70s, so it might be OK. Hondos are actually a very mixed bunch - most were Korean, and the early ones were pretty poor quality. Some later ones were Japanese, although it's hard to tell which without a hands-on look. The hardware's often junk, wherever they're from, although some of them did have US-made DiMarzios fitted. The Ebay one's quite pretty, nice looking neck & non-original scratchplate. As to whether it's a potential bargain, that depends whether his reserve is £40 - once you add £17 postage in, it's not exactly bargain-basement for this sort of thing, imo. If you're after a 70s MIJ P, keep an eye on the JapCrap thread, they come up quite often (a couple of times a week, usually) and they'll get posted on there if they get spotted. Jon.
23.
Remember that thread some time ago about artificially "distressing" a Jazz bass? http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/JAZZ-BASS-REPLICA_W0...emZ110197678142
Distressed? That must've scared 17 shades of sh!t out of it. J.
24.
That one's yours I take it then Jon?
Only for another 7 days, 7 hours & 47 minutes. I generally prefer not to pimp my Ebay junk on BC, but if you insist... Here's a link that should work: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...em=120187555479 I usually find deleting everything after the item number means the link works OK. J.
25. Not much tonight - but this is worth a mention: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...em=170172728575 Ibanez RS924 Roadster - I have one of these & it's a gorgeous (if somewhat hefty) thing. Can't help thinking the price is a tad on the hefty side, too - wonder if anyone 'll shell out £400 for it? Nah. BTW whoever's selling that Franconia's a know-all gobsh!te, ain't they? J.
