These are great looking instruments from one of the finest factories in the world. Hopefully someone will start bringing them into the uk soon. I've heard great things about them. Hope the first gig proves to be blinding with it!

Hi, A quick one and a long shot. I am looking for a trade on my Celinder. It is 'the one' as far as I am concerned in J Update speak: Celinder J Update 5 string Natural/Blonde, Maple board lacquered, Danish Ash body Blocks and Binding Celinder pre amp Celinder humbucking pups (incredibly single coil sounding) 70 pup location Seriously stunning bass, I don't want to part with it! My issue is the weight. It's only slightly heavier than I'm used to, but on the long stood up tour I've been doing lately, I'm very sad to say my back is complaining and it's a risk I can't afford to take with my body. So... I would be interested in trading for another Celinder that is slightly lighter than mine. It hits the scales at 10lb 9oz, I'd be up for anything up to the 10lb mark. I know Celinders are heavy, but being Ash, this model needs the weight to deliver the tone. I'd be interested in the Vintage model (Alder/Rw) as I know there are lighter ones of these around. My one isn't that heavy by Celinder standards but it's still too much for me. I'm very picky and this bass is very much a 'good one'. A very rare bass, took me ages to find, so you'll understand that I'm not interested in anything else right now. However, I need to sort this out quickly so would love to hear from you. PM me and we can exchange photos if you're interested. I know this is a long shot! Thanks for looking and best wishes. Fingerz

Hi mate, I know of a few people in Hull, send me a PM if you'd like me to hunt down a number or two. Cheers, Jo

Anything I've bought or sold on Bass Chat has been a very positive experience. A great resource with no commission taken by the site - please don't forget about this! Timewasters can pop up anywhere and it's often up to the seller to detect this. I've enjoyed some great transactions and made some friends along the way - not very often you can say that. I hope this thread doesn't damage what has been a great resource for me over the past few years.
What have they done to that poor Travis Bean?!
For me, the finish is the least of its problems! Although it's cool to see something from an era where all ideas were explored.

Check out the Sept '65 P bass... Wow! Just a little something I saw and had to share... Enjoy http://www.thelowend.net/thelowend/used-basses.html
Well i ordered the nordy big splits yesterday! the plan is to change the pre once i can afford it Im sure it'll be an improvement over the bart humbuckers
Cool. Well, wait till you hear it, it might be the prefect combo! If you change make sure you do the homework before blowing the cash... Good luck!

Hi mate, Have you sorted anything else out yet? It's hard to say without knowing exactly what the MK1's are... I think they're humbuckers right? Then there's the hole they'll leave behind which limits to some extent what you can stick in... If they're humbuckers then a split coil will give you more of a sound inline with a jazz tone. The big splits will probably be the right size... I've played big splits I liked, and some I didn't - it's all personal, but my point is - the pre amp and pick up combo is gunna be what makes or breaks it. I know a guy with Nordy split coils and a Aggi pre and he loves it, being a real P bass fan I'd say he's getting a fat tone from it! YOu may find you want to change the pre once you've got the pups. If I was gunna do a real super jazz thing tho (IMO of course) and didn't need silent pups I'd put Single coils Lindy Fralins or the like, with a smoking pre amp... Maybe see what some of the guys on Talk Bass have done in your situation. What are you thinking at the moment?

Looks great mate. The necks on Smiths are the most playable necks I've tried. Hope it blows you away on the gig too... keep us posted!
Well Fingerz playing your Celinder has me gassing for one big time! Problem is I like my current gear but can't afford to buy a Celinder without moving something else!
Man, your stuff is wicked, hope the set up did the trick. I guess the problem with Celinders (or the good thing depending on whether you own one or not) is that it's all in house stuff, so they're pretty unique... Though a few days in the simulator should cover a new purchase! Lol. It's just finding one in the first place is the problem in my experience. Come round anytime to keep the g.a.s at bay and so I can noodle on the Nordy and Glock...

I saw that one.. it looks amazing. Let us know how you're getting in with it, if you can put it down!
Hmmm ... I don't know what you've seen, but my 55-94 (USA, bart pickups) has a 3-position switch as does the 55-02 (Far East, Lakie pickups). That spec is confirmed by the Lakland website ("3-way Bridge Pickup Coil Tap Toggle"). Sounds like the one you saw with a two position switch was modified ? Andy
Oh right. Maybe? But the one I played with the Lakland pre (and 2 position coil switch) was brand new and in a shop! I'm not too proud to be wrong, of course, but I'm sure that's what was going on with the 55-02 dlx I played. Interesting..
-
Yep I second the recommendation to check out talk bass on this - there's some great acounts on there on the differences from players who really know the Laklands of old and new. I have a student with a 55 02 dlx with Barts and have played the up to date stuff with the Lakland pups/pre. I'd agree that the bart set up sounds slightly more aggressive but with variations from bass to bass i'm sure you can find very similar sounding basses from either era. defo in the same ball park and I'd be really suprised in a live setting if there was a big diference. One clear thing I've noticed is that the Bart one I played had a 3 position switch for the humbucker. This gives you (in the Humbucker): 1)Front most single coil 2)humbucker/both coils 3)Rear coil on it's own. On the Lakland equipped one I played there was a 2 position switch for humbucking/single coil settings on that rear pickup. They are great basses IMO whichever you look at. Defo check out Talk bass..

Well, if I built a cab, I'd be seriously tempted to try some B & C neo drivers in it. They have put the speakers in some amazing cabs (old UL Epi's) and, although they were tweaked for specific designs, I reckon their off the shelf stuff would be pretty amazing. Their customer service is pretty good too if you want to drop them a line.. Highly recommended for some deep sounding 10's !

Hi mate, Your bass looks amazing. I'm sure I'd pay 600-650 for one like that. If I had the dosh I'd consider it as a back up for mine. Very rare to see in such good condition. Your fingerboard looks quite figured too. Probably from the Fujigen factory where the best MIJ stuff is from for a lot of companies. There's sources online to find out what the serial no means for Fenders so you can figure out its exact origins if you wanted to. Wicked looking instrument. Highly recommended.
-
Oh, I see yours is immaculate. Mine had a fair few battle scars and buckle rash... maybe you could ask a bit more. A real gem if mine is anything to go by.
-
Yes. I bought one of these from the gallery about three years ago for £500. It is an amazing bass, and better than a lot of vintage MIA stuff worth a fortune. But as a seller there is no justice in the price, as a buyer they can be the bargain of a lifetime.. tough breaks. Mine is a blonde 1985 with rosewood board.
-
Buying a bass off the internet is really common these days too - without playing it first. Probably a big reason why stuff gets sold on so often ...

Yeh I agree, a lot of people want something that isn't available off the shelf. It's amazing to think of a boutique instrument coming together slowly in a workshop under meticulous attention to detail. Also, some of the timbers that luthiers use are stunning and really well prepared. I suspect the selling of high end gear is often down to G.A.S. That and the fact that even though an instrument may look stunning, sometimes the sound may not be right. I think it's so easy to buy with your eyes when there are such pretty basses around, but then we all play with our ears so that probably creeps in over time! The other thing is - IME - that until you get out gigging with an instrument you don't know really how well it suits you and how well it fits the context of the band as you'd like it to. I've gone through a few basses due to this, and sold some amazing kit. And my fav bass is from the other end of the spectrum relatively cheap and far from exotic timbers but it works amazingly. It's the same with vintage fenders etc, they all get sold and acquired for one reason or another. I'd like to think all instruments end up with the right owner eventually !
