  1. Alan sold me two lovely rasps and threw in a round file as part of the deal, quickly delivered well packed. Many thanks for everything 🙂
  2. so the shielding isn't 'earthed' and the screw on the apparently noisy pickup is in contact with the shielding by the looks of it, nothing to do with the pickups, the screw isn't electrically connected to the pickup it's just holding the cover in place, the foam is isolating the back of the pickup from the shielding
  3. have you tried changing the tone pot or tone capacitor ? Dropping in a different set of pots/capacitor only means a bit of soldering or de-soldering and screwdriver work if you get a solderless set up like @KiOgon makes I like the twin stack set up with different caps for each pickup, but on a VVT the cap makes quite a difference and old ones can drift in value so maybe yours is emphasising some of the E string frequencies in a way that you don't like
  4. This happened to me too, but I sucked it up as it was an exchange deal and other than the poor set up (basically a fresh set of strings fitted (probably to replace the old rusty ones) but no cleaning or polishing of frets or intonation setting, dirt and the loose strap buttons that needed plugging of the body to resolve it was basically a very nice bass that I much preferred to the one I had swapped it for, though I sold it on at the beginning of Covid as by then I had finally built my custom version which is my avatar
  5. Thanks for testing the BT7, I haven't changed strings (tapewounds on fretless) yet, but I know the BT7 will fit other instruments I have, and also there are people who'll buy it if I don't use it at all. HE6 looks the best off the shelf option as it's only 1 hole to drill and is covered by Sandberg Cal II tuner if removed Maybe BassDirect or another dealer can discuss this with Sandberg and get a recommendation for all the California II models, we can't be the only peeps wanting to fit one to one of their basses. I reckon Hipshot might actually make the Sandberg tuners, but as with all things these days no one will acknowledge where they actually source parts for the usual bollocks reason of 'commercial confidentiality'
  6. There's so much stuff for sale on all market places so generally buyers are spoilt for choice; reasonably priced (where seller bought it cheap, both new and used, some years ago and is also happy to pay for the use of it so isn't using the new inflated price of stuff as yardstick to pricing used) stuff sells, but then so does some of the frankly overpriced (maybe different dynamics in different price points and 'vintage' market), but maybe the not so special run of the mill stuff is hard to shift as people may be less inclined to 'buy to try' as worried they won't be able to shift it at same price if they don't like it. But for most paying the bills and buying food and looking after the kids' needs/wants are the priority
  7. email Alan, he's super helpful ime, he can probably tell you how to reassemble correctly. There must be a process they follow in the factory to ensure correct polarity and phase so that the pickups sound as good as possible and match as pairs; he may well have something to advise about PJ set up as afaik they don't sell PJ sets, but obviously they can be made up buying single pickups, which may or not be ideal ? Is there a standard for polarity for neck and bridge 'jazz' pickups, if so it should be published and manufacturers follow it (or not) ?
  8. sounds great, you and the instrument
  9. Repeat customer at Paul's shop 😉, he sold me a nice condition Fender Fideltron pickup, well packed with hardware and all good, many thanks
  10. ClapIR Acoustics Measurement for apple computer/iphone might help most of the apps for room analysis seem to be based on making a listening room/studio space
  11. I'm assuming you cut the nut to accommodate the thicker strings and tried changing pickup height already ? just wondering
  12. is it flat(ish) on the back ? How heavy ? Maybe two hecules (other brands/styles are available) type hangers one at the bottom one on the neck, maybe mounted on brackets with wooden block shelves to fix the mounts to, maybe hinged so could lie flat against the wall when not in use ?
  13. I could get a quote for 25kg parcel based on a roughly packed M6 from parcel2go, or at least prices, I couldn't continue through teh booking process as I didn't have exact parcel size and, DPD was about £55
  14. The BT 7 fits the California original model which had pretty much same tuners as Mexican Fenders, and may well fit the II models but is very different to the stock tuners, but then so is the one fitted to the Ida Nielsen. I did buy the BT7 off Lozz so will offer it up when changing strings next and see, it will mean drilling a hole to secure it so want to see if it will be hidden by the Sandberg original tuner if mod is reversed. Seems odd the Hipshot make a tuner for Sandberg but not for the whole range, do the Germans not like them, or are they incapable of making their own ? Is the whole D-tuner thing patented by Hipshot still ?
  15. I have the original supplied strings as Rob (previous owner) fitted the tapes from the get go I think; I'm enjoying it as is for now, big sound from the Sandberg pickups, but I will try some steel flats and the round wounds out for sure.
  16. Sandberg short scale bass, VS4 is the P version, this is my just acquired fretless
  17. Don't rate the Wunjo receipt much, no real detail (like case, covers, candy etc..), & no serial number; I'd want and expect more if I was buying a vintage instrument for good money from a dealer
  18. saves me going through my drawers 👍
  19. I think I have got some used Squier tuners here if you need them; have to find them and check they are the same as you need
  20. Philip Conrad has a YT vid comparing the Origin and the SGT link, sorry I just can't figure out how to embed: ); SVT better on Origin (as supplied but obviously you could change the IRs) but the B15 sound (which Philip uses generally) is the extra bonus, so slightly more versatile....
  21. It's that era specific and studio specific and engineered specific of that bass with old strings played with thumb and fingers DI into the desk, maybe originally recorded along with something like a B15 mic'd up and the two mixed and bounced down together on tape; a tubey, harmonically rich, compression thing which is generally more appealing than transistor or digitally recorded stuff to many people; there's a pedal/DI box available that tries to replicate it based on what was used originally
  22. Also worth noting Rob is a multi-instrumentalist, and has a lot of YT content Robb MacKillop on YT
  23. Holy thread resurrection 🙃 I posted a wanted ad for a fretless 4 string 30" earlier in the week and Alain, aka ead sent me a link to this very bass on Ebay, which I hadn't seen of course; took me about 5 minutes to look at the pics, find this very thread, think a bit and press buy it now😍 Had a good exchange with Rob on Ebay and he wrapped it in enough bubble wrap to cover a michelin man so Parcelforce didn't damage it and it arrived this morning as promised So nice, so very, very nice. I am no longer sad at selling the Status necked Jazz back to three, as I had a noodle on that over the weekend before packing it and had some remorse. All gone now, 30" is where I am at now Bass is slightly more light aged than when Rob bought it which I am happy about, I don't have to worry about marking it so it will be out of its case and ready to play a lot. I might even get slightly proficient 😀
  24. I had the same issue, unfortunately the plastic of the pickup back is quite soft so the screws can strip out, but main issue was the aperture in the pickguard is too tight for the covers so they don't move freely especially if you angle the pickups at all to follow the radius of the so the result is the spring pressure isn't sufficient to push the cover into the body when trying to lower them, though the pickups may have moved, but on mine after a couple of adjustments the threads were stripped. I removed the pickguard, dissembled it all, filed the apertures in the pickguard so the pickup covers could move freely and made little metal plates to fit behind the the pickups drilled and tapped to suit the 3mm height adjustment screws so now they move freely; I ummed and erred about changing the springs for surgical tubing but didn't in the end.
