1. Glad to hear you got through it all with your sanity intact..Typical bloody drummer, drinker or both!! Just goes to show that no matter how you prepare for these situations, people always go and do the unexpected and everyone has to adapt and make the best of it, which obviously, you've done... Enjoy the mixing session - that's fun!
 2.
I know this place is about debate but I don't see the point of these threads TBH. One man's Mingus is another man's Adam Clayton and vice versa. I've seen these threads rapidly degenerate into a slanging match and end up fueling disagreements between previously friendly members. Just my opinion ( ) of course.
You were right!
 3.
The original query asks who 'you' think is over-rated... surely if you list a bassist that you don't like, that then means that they can't be over-rated. You don't rate them at all, hence they can not by definition be over-rated by you
Not at all.. If for example, I don't like a particular bassist such as Mark King, that doesn't preclude that fact that lots of other people do 'rate' Mr King. Therefore IMHO, he is 'over-rated (overrated, overratted etc, etc whatever...) because too many other people 'rate' him, when I don't. Simple really, but then you knew that already, didn't you?
 4.
I don't think you're a rat at all, and I certainly wouldn't overrat you
Some of my best friends are rats
 5.
Well I'm glad you have aired your opinion. I bet we all feel well informed and have learnt something new today. One thing I have to concede: when it comes to talking bollocks, I couldn't possibly keep pace with you
Surely, you're not overratting me are you?
 6. Very nice!
 7.
If you read the question, then your reply misses the point. Who is rating the player in the first place? It can't be you otherwise how can you rate them and then say they are overrated? Logically we are being asked who WE think is overrated by THE WIDER WORLD. If the wider world have rated them to any significant degree then what is said here is, quite literally, a way to waste time. An opinion is only worth having if it is backed up with knowledge, experience and some kind of supporting evidence. Saying "I think Jaco is overrated" is like saying "I think blue is not golf". Meaningless. By the way, which washer-dryers are, in your opinion, overrated?
Egad's - this is a bit much for a Sunday morning! ...looks for Edward De Bono's 'I am Right, You are Wrong' first edition before sitting down to compose a sensible reply.. You're talking complete bollocks, sir! In your post you said: "Overrated by who? Without wishing to descend into an argument, does the wider world care what the posters on this thread think?" Obviously, the wider world doesn't care what we think because that's not the point of this thread. But the person who posted this topic, Josh, does care what we think. And it's to Josh and other Basschat members that our opinions are addressed.. Saying "I think Jaco is overrated" is a completely consistent, logical statement in the context in which it is being expressed here in this thread.... Especially as he is
 8.
Exactly man, this is purely on the basis of opinions and not fact and in no way did I intend for this thread to be one littered with the perpetual arguing which is now becoming all the rage. As I said I'm just interested to see what we all think. From the posts thus far, I get the impression that as bass players we give bassist's/or any muscians a great amount of respect, even if the player does not hit your eruption button. As opposed to the thread on the Pearl's drummer forum, which was more people all bashing the legends (Bonham, Moon, Baker and even Peart etc...) to aggrivate more than to state an opinion. Occasionally a sensible mind would write a post accepting all the opinions and admitting respect to them, and would thus be open to more flamming. Even for the few I think are "Over-rated" I respect greatly, Flea drives me up the sodding wall along with his army of Slap-a-likes, but he has built himself a great career, influenced countless bassists over the years and is still going strong, all you really can do is respect that As long as our opinions have an ounce of respect the less chance there is someone will take it the wrong way.
+1
 9.
Overrated by who? Without wishing to descend into an argument, does the wider world care what the posters on this thread think? Jaco, Jamerson, Mark King and the rest have made music that has entertained and been enjoyed by people all round the world. Have you?
That's not the point, with respect.. The original post - by a member of Basschat, asked fellow Basschat members - who we thought were overrated. Therefore, it's a question about our opinions here, not about the achievements of the bassists in question out there in the 'wider world'.. So IMHO, it's just a harmless way to pass the time and definitely not a way to start arguements..
 10. Mark King, Level 42 Though unbelievably dextrous, in my opinion, his playing and music is souless, funkless, 80s shiny blue-eyed pop.. More a technician than musician Loads better than I could ever be, but highly overrated..
 11. 100% agree! It's common courtesy..
 12.
Tomorrow's the big day. The main man is going in at 11am to lay down guide guitars & vocals. Me & drummer are going in for 4pm to hopefully record the drums & bass together. I'm pretty sure I'll be overdubbing or punching in corrections after any main takes. Guitarist is going in on Sunday to do his stuff. The real vocals & harmonies, keyboards & percussion will all be done on Monday and he's going to mix it all on Tuesday. We've been rehearsing pretty solid and are all quite excited. Looking forward to it. Thanks again all, for your advice & comments, Mark
Good luck with it all Mark and make sure you enjoy yourself in the process!
 13.
i suppose for the next song she requested "I want to break free" lucky git an all
14.
In the band i am in the guitarist always tries to tell me how to play a basssline (i have only been playing for 25 years) which tends to do my head in as i do not tell him how to play things on his guitar. Is it because they follow the myth that a bass player is someone who wants to play a guitar but is not good enough which of course is a load of bo####s any views or am i being over sensitive
I always get wound up when any of the other band members notice and point out my mistakes!! Because I never ever point out theirs...
 15.
Glad you guy's are happy. Thanks for the feedback. Nik, I've just brought one of these for my other Triad http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/BRAND-NEW-Genuine-SW...1713.m153.l1262 They did have some spare plastic corners in the other day. Lee
Thanks for the link Lee; I've noticed the plastic corners already so might do a double order!
 16. Just bought Lee's SWR Triad and it's brilliant! As described, perfectly packaged and Lee's a really easy person to deal with! He knows his stuff too and that always turns what is a bit of business into a real pleasure. Thanks mate! Nik
 17.
A lot of dosh for a 2nd hand case with a broken catch!
Very true in the big scheme of things but there's a lot of Wal owners out there who've bought their Wal second-hand for a couple of grand or more, so wouldn't mind spending an extra £120 for an original case..
 18.
Oddly enough.... those that went to the last bash will know there was some very trick stuff there..... Know what I enjoyed playing with the most....? One of Silverfoxniks BC Riches... All black beaut.....Real class.
Thanks Bob! The one you played of mine is a 1984 BC Rich Eagle, but it's the New Jersey Series, not one of the USA models (USA parts constructed in Japan). Unlike Shockwave's Eagle, it's a passive model but with vintage Dimarzio pick ups and a beautiful thru-neck that sounds and plays like a dream! IIRC, Shockwave's Eagle is an early 2000s Custom Shop model I believe and it looks very nice too! It has the full-monty in terms of the active circuitry and it is very, very versatile tonally... I had an original 1978 Eagle that was stolen in 1995 and I'm still gutted by that loss! As has been said by bass ferret, BC Rich do indeed make some very high quality basses.
 19. Our gig on Saturday at the harbour Club, Shoreham was really good but there was a slightly worse for wear girl 'dancing' away during the first set to such an extent that she kept most of the other punters off the dance floor.. Apparently, she used to be a stripper and was politely removed from the venue during the interval! Fortunately, her best efforts have been immortalised on YouTube here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UB1niIcIfow
 20. Great story! What song were you playing when it happened?? Any number of appropriate titles spring to mind... 'Let's Get It On', 'Don't Stop Me Now' etc, etc
 21.
Nik..... ooooh I wish... Last run of basses made by Mr Smith was 2001-2004 (the PRS IV) of which I have 2 (nearly had 3 but got ripped off to the tune of £850 ) of 495.... Thats equal to a fender limited run... SE (Student Edition) is the made in Korea series, which have US QC but made in PRoK not in Stevensville. The custom shop (PRS call it Private Stock) options of buying a new IV are available but at $6k to place an order, is way beyond me for a playing instrument. I just feel lucky to have 2. They really are exceptional.
Bloody hell! $6k to place an order.. Scary.. Hope you've got yours insured?
 22.
Nik, I shouldnt think for one min that Paul does all his own research, but he does have a pretty good team around him... My guess would be that as PRS is (in the scheme of things) a fairly young company that any collusion with another "outside" patentable name would have to be mentioned...... i.e. "developed in conjunction with BL etc......" ????? In other parts of PRS history where someone outside the company has helped with development of a product credit is given..... It would be interesting to know if anyone else that 'did' work for the Co. when they made the basses is no longer there..... Another interesting point for me is ...... When are they going to make more basses? I feel an SE bass is looming somewhere but they never confirm or deny anything......
I suspect you're right Bob.. Someone like BL would be a PR boost, so if he had been involved then I'm sure he would have been cited as a contributor. Didn't realise that PRS don't make any basses now.. That's a real oversight on their part!! Do you mean Special Edition by the initials SE? If so, how about 'The Burpster Bass' by PRS.. It's got a ring to it!
 23.
I'm pretty sure Mr Smith will be well miffed by that..... To quote PRS history.... "2 PRS high inductance passive pickups (v/v/t with high end switchable audio pre-amp)" There was a lot (apparently) of development went into those pups... and a F***ing good job they did to! (although that development may have been done by BL I somehow doubt it!) In fact the whole electrics are very yummy!
As part of the job for Fender, Bill Lawrence worked closely with Roscoe Beck on the p/ups in the RBV to get them just so RB imagined them (so the story goes..) So BL does a lot of work with other people and other companies so maybe he did some work for PRS? But then, I wouldn't want to take anything away from Mr Smith...
 24.
Using your definition, then yes I do with this one.... My frist 'proper' bass and the one by whhich all else is judged. So far nothing has come near it. Whatever I try 'new' I coming back to this one is like going back to the house that you grew up in.... Just makes you feel relaxed and like you were 'meant to be'.!
Great looking bass.. What are the pick ups on it, only they look like a Bill Lawrence design?
Nik's RBV does sound fantastic - it's Guiness in bass tone form - rich, smooth and creamy.
Cheers clauster.. That's a good description and obviously, I'm pretty drunk on it as stingrayfan noticed earlier!
 25.
Nice youtube clip. I wanted a red one too, but didn't have the tracksuit to match!
Thanks for the clip paul, the - I hadn't seen that before!
