  1. The beauty of a clear guard is that you can try out different looks just by cutting and inserting thin card or paper behind it to check out the effect. I have an all black ‘insert’, one with a paisley pattern made from and old bandana (stuck onto card) and a tort one, where I bought a small sheet of stick on tort (for acoustic guitars) and trimmed it up.
  2. Good for them, that messing about was the most blatant prima donna behaviour, just because the whole World was watching. Live Aid wasn’t meant to be about ‘look at me’ - a total dick move and boring to watch/listen to. Contrast that with Simple Minds.
  3. Sloe Gin - Joe Bonamassa
  4. I Can't Stand Up For Falling Down - Elvis Costello
  5. Road to Nowhere - Talking Heads
  6. Flat wound strings and a piece of foam under the bridge are favoured by those looking for that old school, P bass thump (think James Jameson on the old Motown recordings). Stick with what’s on there for the moment, until you work out what you want from it tonally, then you can investigate the many options. Fortunately, there is plenty of help on Basschat in this regards. Nice bass you have there. 👍
  7. Lily the Mink - The Scaffold
  8. Rat in Mi Kitchen - UB40
  9. My Best Friend’s Girl - The Cars
  10. No idea, possibly.
  11. There were tarps at Springsteen, but that’s still an awful lot of traffic. That said, grass is very resilient and it was no doubt in tip top condition for whatever the next big footie game was.
  12. That’d be a great gig; top album!
  13. Man alive I do love his work on Graceland. ☺️
  14. Talking of slapping a fretless sometimes causing a raised eyebrow (not with me you understand), I would turn those folks’ attention to Paul Young's Come Back and Stay, where the bassist of this thread, slaps the crap out of the bass also in this thread. We won’t mention Les Claypool, as he’s just nuts .
  15. Likewise. I was just thinking that the pitch at Wembley took a hammering that year, what with Live Aid and Springsteen.
  16. Funky Gibbon - The Goodies
  17. One assumes that Pino just didn’t crank the bass and treble all the way up (far too tasteful a player for any full on shenanigans), thus the ‘Ray’s natural midrange remained front and centre.
  18. I had the fretted version of this, IMO, the best colour MM ever did.
  19. That’ll do - sorted 👍
  20. Woolly Bully - Sam the Sham & the Pharaohs
  21. Slap plates! I remember them. When I did my first defret, I was tempted to leave the last fret or two in to offer this option (I didn’t eventually).
  22. They make a great sounding fretless.
  23. I think I’ve had 5 over the years, 2 of which were defrets. Currently just the 2 in the house, not including the EUB.
  24. Kings of the Wild Frontier - Adam & the Ants
