  1. It looks to me like a homemade body with a Grant neck; Grants were Fender copies in the 70s, similar to Columbus.
  2. Well, if you're talking about other threads, than perhaps not. In the case here, I had good day out, but I didn't buy anything from that shop and I wouldn't make an effort to go there in particular. I can get the item in question without leaving the house.
  3. It's slightly over-dramatising to use terms like "so upset" and "feelings hurt"; I was more commenting on the futility of going to a shop. I'll go to places I enjoy and I'll walk past the ones which can't be bothered.
  4. Well, if asking to try out a cab makes me a difficult customer, then they're in the wrong business.
  5. Not really pointless - it'd give a good idea of its capabilities and I'm not sure that a 1x10 is really a gig cab. (I'd likely use it with other amps too, so it's not Elf-specific.) I happened to be there and would have probably bought it, but no plans to go back in the forseeable. Precisely - I can get one of these from (presumably) many places, and perhaps at a better price. The difference between a shop and the Internet is that you can go to a shop, try the item, and walk out with it there and then. It's up to the shop to make me want to buy the item from them, or I'll go elsewhere.
  6. I went into Guitar Village, in Farnham, for a look today. They had a Trace Elliot 1x10 cab there, so I asked if I could try it, as I have an Elf. The assistant (who was wearing a Trace Elliot shirt) said the only amp they had was a combo which was sat on top of it, to which I pointed out that that wouldn't work very well, as it had its own speakers too; he said there might be another one in another room, but really that combo was it. I don't believe that they didn't have another amp head in the shop, but they plainly couldn't be bothered. I said don't bother.
  7. I ecently bought a 100 pack of Rickenbacker compatible hex screws - I don't think I'll run out!

    NBD - Vox?

Well, I've just tried playing it and it's a bit hokey-cokey, also one of the machines is way too stiff. I think I'll disassemble it and try some experiments with removing the overpainting. In the end I'm only in it for a fiver; I would like to get to something playable, but if I just end up with a wall hanger, then that'll be alright.
  9. @BrunoBass Shame you didn't make it to the Bass Bash; we could've put them side-by-side (I think yours has a better finish!).

    NBD - Vox?

    I hadn't noticed the tuners - they're "characterful"!

    NBD - Vox?

Same as bertbass paid for his!
  12. I picked up this bass today at a car boot sale and it looks like it's a 60s Vox Clubman which has been overpainted (yes, by their son in his bedroom, the couple selling it told me). Any advice as to how can I strip off the paint without taking off the original finish too (the pickguard too)? I don't know anything about the paint that was used.

    NBD - Vox?

Yep - that's my plan. I think I'll be in the modding section asking for tips on how to remove the makeover without stripping the original finish. (If only I'd had it a day before, I'd have taken it to the bash bash and got some advice f2f.)
  14. No worries! :-) The folks at the Bass Bash yesterday seemed to like it.

    NBD - Vox?

Aha! It looks like a Clubman. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Vintage-Vox-Clubman-Electric-Bass-Guitar-1960s-No-Reserve-Auction/142781696032?hash=item213e73c820:g:mfsAAOSwWw1a62Ik

    NBD - Vox?

I've just been to a car boot and came home with this... Apparently the folks' son painted it some time back. I've now got to strip off the paint and see what's underneath. I don't know anything about it, other than it says VOX on the pickups.
  17. I have something not dissimilar...
  18. I wasn't intending it as a negative; I was following on from saying the high octave is not so good. The 1 and -2 ones are good (subject to the caveat of physics wrt the -2). You're right that ths SS's tracking is spot on.
  19. My Marbass Super Synth's octaver does -2; on a bottom-E you can just hear the individual beats of the sound, rather than a note as such.
  20. My only regret is that I didn't get to play many other folks' basses - I arrived at 2 and next thing it was home time!
