1.
Could be an issue with how he installs the strings, or if he sweats on them loads (will generally make them die quicker too). Elixirs are good for sweaty sorts. There are all sorts of metal fatigue things that can be happening. Hard to explain in text.
He does sweat buckets! I'm pretty sure he uses Elixirs too! he uses weedy thin plectrums which I never like the sound of on acoustic - makes less difference on the tele. I wonder if flipping the barrels over would be worth trying to start with, to use a fresh bearing point?
2. I've tried to repair my guitarists Planet Waves cable. It's been abused, but isn't really reliable. It has put me off buying them. The tone used to come and go on it. Could be to do with the conductive core getting to the braid at the stressed points.
3. Ha, someone recently changing from acoustic, to keep the feel similar, I'd guess! It's pretty well set up, I've checked it over for him (he's a user not a tweaker!)
4. Hi all my guitarist breaks a string at pretty much every rehearsal and some gigs and it's getting on my wick! They always go at the bridge and it's as often the wound strings as the tiddlers. I think the gauge is 11-52. The bridge is top load, not through body and its a US Tele. Does anyone have good experiences switching to graphtech saddles? The claimed benefits for sustain and "tone" are not an issue. Will they help him stop bustin those strings?
5. Sandberg do several in that config. If you could get to try one that should give you an idea how it might sound.
6. My '74 SG special (mini humbuckers) Ultra light and with a chunky neck that feels just right to me.
7.
With an aluminium neck.
Hell yes!
8. Not all truss rods are lefty loosey, righty tighty. Most are though. Sei aren't.
9. Hi Dan. Welcome to BassChat Where are you playing wednesday? I've got one at the Wheatsheaf this wednesday
10. Wouldn't one of these look great with the same little white pickup at the bridge a la Jazz? Anyone with the requiste photoshop skillz care to knock one up (on a torino red Bronco)?
11. If the dot holes are shallow you could just plane or sand the whole board down. Would be a benefit it the neck is on the chunky side already.
12. They do have a unique sound though - great in some settings. I had a Kramer 450B and they weighed a lot, possibly 12.5 lbs iirc. Real mans bass, that. It felt totally indestructable.
13. Well, its just arrived at work, superb packing and is immaculate - barely a mark on it! This sounds good acoustically, always a good sign, 1/4 turn loosen on the truss sorted out all the fret buzz. Look forward to trying it out amplified! Oh, and the pink fluffy strap (Levy's) WAS included! Tasteful!
14. I didn't think to ask if the strap was included!
15. How loud do these go in clean mode? I only had a quick tinker on the mini stack version and only really tried out the dirty sounds (which were nice!)
16. I've always fancied one of these. Whatever happened to all the gubbins? What kind of a bridge could you find to go on one of these?
17. Can you now un-knee your bandmate though?
18. Oh well. Got a red Bronco off eBay for £72 plus shipping. I'll let you know what I think of it when it turns up.
19.
yeah, neither of my stl 10s have them. i have to stop myself breaking the thing and open and disconnecting the tweeter myself
why not just turn the treble on the amp down a tad?
20. Hmm, the weight may be an issue. She's a little thing, and in her 60s!
21.
Just watching it now and thought the same thing. At last, a tasteful slapper. Nice bass too.
Funny, I thought he overplayed the line just a fraction. Good playing nonetheless
22. When you say chunky, do you mean more so than a 70s 'Master? I like em like that, but the girl I'm looking on behalf of really isn't that fussy afaik.
23. try rapping (with your knuckle!) on the back of the neck with the strings muted. If the truss rod is at all loose you should hear it. This can cause all manner of different unwanted adible artifacts.
24. Thanks Leon, good info. Spotted the one on the Bay, I will be going for it. Re the tapewounds - you might find they intonate in a very different position to the rounds. I did an old Hofner up for a mate and couldn't believe how much further back the bridge had to go, especially on the bass side. This might work in your favour in this instance.
25. Hi All I'm looking to source a backup bass for a friend who uses a Musicmaster. Needs to be short scale and simple! Do the Affinities make a decent sound, and would you use one as a backup/gigging bass? I've never had my hands on one, so would probably be buying blind off t'Bay or even here... Any issues and thoughts welcome. Cheers. Jules
