Bean9seventy - the first UK funk / slap bassist?
SpondonBassed replied to Bean9seventy's topic in General Discussion
Personal observations are facets of a jewel. I think we all agree that the funk/slap thing polarised a lot of musicians in their thoughts about technique. It certainly drew people into playing bass who would not otherwise have bothered, the OP and myself included. I never applied myself strongly enough to become proficient at any bass playing technique other than keeping time and melodic relevance. I'm not where I want to be with those either and that is the carrot that I have dangling before me on a stick. It gives my hobby purpose and a reason to do the donkey work. I admire those who have applied themselves. It isn't important to me to know who was first but it does fill in some of the gaps in the overall picture to hear from early adopters. -
I can't speak for the respected member but it has been implied that he might benefit from a sprinkling of salt on his tail. Personally I put a pinch of salt to three desert spoons of rolled porridge oats (not instant, never, no way) then mix with three desert spoons of semi-skimmed milk and three desert spoons of water before microwaving for three minutes under a 700W magnetron. That makes a small breakfast portion. If I want a treat I add ALDI's nuttiest granola on top. Marmalade on porridge is a good call. I like chunky cut marmalade on non-white bread too. PS; I seldom add sugar or salt after cooking. If seasoning is done properly during the preparation of a meal, nothing is needed on top with certain exceptions where salt must only be introduced at the point of consumption to avoid excessive osmosis.

Ah the cosmic significance of it all. Can you imagine the Bieber generation when they get to middle age? The arguments over who came up with the cuddly stuffed toy impersonations first should be breathtaking. I don't know why folk get worked up over something that can't be defined, even if you were there. It is an interesting topic though and I appreciate an alternative view even if it does sometimes sound as if it comes with a helping of chips on each shoulder. -
Great Debut! I especially liked the tank slapper at 1:01. I didn't know you could play a DB like a motorbike.

Semi Hollow Bass (and another two...)

Having come from that thread just now, I agree. It's a lovely piece of maple. Plus; I reckon you'll be like a kid on Christmas morning with your new router set-up. I wish you many successful builds with it. -

As always; you demonstrate a talent for getting the different types of grain to flow with each other to give the close observer a feast for the eyes. Remarkable. -

Blade Sharpening, a Professional Approach

I am happier to avoid wafting freshly sharpened implements across my palm if I can. It's good to have the choice. -

The strop is something that I have never understood. I know it as a strap that was used for keeping an edge on the old hand razors that barbers still use but I know nothing as to whether it is used with abrasive or if it is abrasive in itself. Now that it's been mentioned here a couple of times, I am off to find out some more. I am also intrigued by the aforementioned palm slapping technique. I also saw it mentioned on a webpage about the Scary Sharp technique after @Jimothey mentioned it. I have an oilstone that came with my late father's tool kit. It looks like it is made of two different grades of stone, one on either side. Is that possible? I am sure it could use a dressing but I am not sure yet whether to do that or take up an alternative technique. This topic helps a lot in making that decision. -

Cheers Douglas. -
Crikey! Do you want to put the lad off? You'll scare him back into being a full time guitarist for goodness' sake! Heeheehee.

Sorry to hear about that but I'm very glad you got off lightly. It sounds like you might have answered your own question. Perhaps it would be worth reviewing your strategy for coping with stress?

I had you down as a coquettish debutant. Close enough. -
Welcome Jason.

I had a Squier fretless Jazz once. It went back within the week. I can't get on with the shape of Fenders in general nor the massive headstock.

I think you need captive nuts Mick. (It's not a thing I've said to many people, I should stress.)

Welcome Andy.

Welcome Lazarus. That's a great patina on your bass. Hang around here for any length of time and you'll discover that there are people who go to great lengths to make a brand new instrument look like that.

I suffer a bit from that sometimes too. Maybe ease off on the Jerusalem artichokes? -

Many thanks. -
Given that you posted at a minute past midnight you could call that the Midnight P, ahem. I love its smouldering good looks.
