1. Bassdoc forum member makes great scratch plates.
2. It's a sign of the times, alas first, the sound and light guy is replaced by on-stage controlling, 'real' musicians' replaced by puppets who drive/carry gear. . PLUS keyboard players have a reputation for being mercenary bread-heads. True, from my experiences.
3. Nothing to do with me....but thought it was interesting... ad on a north east live band promoting site: "Roadie/ Keyboard mimer wanted for touring show...STAGE PERFORMANCE and image essential. non smoker must have own transport and be available for weekend work, occasional overnights and tours".
4.
The reviews of the basses feel more like advertisements. They don't seem very honest at all.
I always thought that too. never any criticisms....or tiny if ever. Paragraphs of visual descriptions that are evident in the photos anyway. z-z-z-z-z...
5.
One of many from the same album...
good call. great intro when the rhythm kicks in. I remember being so excited by this. had to dash to bass and learn.disco runs, harmonics, yaaah! happy days
6.
I think it helps when you are the artist relations manager for Fender for 8 years.
well that just about sums up the whole high end of the musician world doesn't it? I don't think I will be able to sleep tonight after that bit of info. Another vote for Entwistle for me. In fact the whole of the Who. Bish-bash-Bosh-crash-overplay....sounding like a bunch of 14 year old's in their first band rehearsal
7. Sorry sorry sorry - but....... Tony Franklin..........................being granted a signature model by no less than Fender. Right place, right time guy? He is the irritating bloke in the music shop sliding every other note, just because its a f-r-e-t-l-e-s-s.
8.
Don't get me started on Pino with the Who.....wrong, wrong, wrong.
True. Pino, tooootally wasted on that lot.
9.
If you want a cheap option you could try veneering a neck! Dont laugh it worked on my Ryder. (The walnut P next to that one you asked about Paint both veneer and fboard with watered down PVA glue. 2 coats. Let it dry and iron on. Quick sand down and your done No bumps and plays lovely. A
Good call my friend! would love to see that bass in action. I am having a new unmarked ebony fingerboard put on a bass by a reputable luthier only ., £75 !!. I think that is a great price considering I was quoted £300 by a big-named UK company. Find a fretted you love, find another £75. Hey presto.
10.
Yep, i agree with this also. It sounds totally out of place and adds nothing to the music. A nice funky sounding bass, Jazz or Stingray for example would had been far more effective.
Can't say I have heard the original, but perhaps he was asked to emulate a synth bass. We don't always have 100% say.
11. Some really good stuff on this forum.Sounds like an interesting project from a bass playing point of view. Yes, I agree. fretless.
12. well done all of you. pleasant listening.
13.
Fave though was our guitarist who would stand behind you shaking his head to show everyone that you'd made a mistake. Ironic thing was, he would sulk if you criticised him for making a mistake of which there were plenty. A true bell end of the highest order.
Bell end of the highest order? more than that. The complete c*ck.
14.
Well that's your coping mechanism - you get into character to play a role. Sorry mate, that was never the intention I promise. I've always found the way people react under given circumstances absolutely fascinating and the only way I can do that is understand why I react to different things in certain ways. In my enthusiasm I do sometimes forget that drawing people into self analysis can be a bit disconcerting.
My response was tongue-in-cheek mate.No offence taken. I sometimes worry that I am seen as being a bit flippant, but I just try not to take things too seriously. We are on this planet for a very short time!
15. used a Rick' too
16.
Can't stand the way he's using it but it's a nice effect. I like.
How is he using it? not sure I understand
17. Headphones on please.. What is the bassist using to achieve that effect? Anything that might sound similar? I won't attempt to guess, leave it up to the fx experts among us! ( I hear an octaver) the great Gino Vannelli sings http://youtu.be/Kjj0hNI6uJo
18. Sounds good..................................................But keep people informed?!!
19.
Just leave it alone, unless you want to spend loads of time matching the quality and colour of the original finish with what looks like a satin lacquer.!Time and money could be best spent on a new set of strings, no-one's bothered if it says "Squier" and when you come to sell it a no-name could be worth less.....
as far as selling it, to prove its not a plank of wood dressed up. leave the Squier logo on the back of the neck. yeah, hard to match the finish. i did it then thought " why?" if you insist, mine came off no bother with fine grade wire wool.
20.
Those years and years of playing and being in control of your instrument are what's given you the self confidence. If I knew you as a person outside of playing and then saw you just prior to going on, I bet I'd be able to spot the subconcious coping mechanism you were using.
Interesting, Dr. Lector..... ; ) Seriously, I don't bat an eyelid as I look up at the stage with 5 minutes to go. Maybe when there's a few new songs in the set, I have a "can't wait til that bit is over" about me But as someone else said, some people still get really nervous despite years of performing. We are all different and my approach doesn't make me any cleverer or better than another person. I have been a teacher, a children's entertainer and a stand-up comedian, so it is obviously part of my make-up to entertain/address a crowd. I have to hold my hand up and say that I get into character. I adopt a mental stance that I am up there, and the crowd aren't. They are there to see ME, eve if they aren't. I definitely have a quirky approach to the visual side of things, but in a subtle way. I am being myself, but it is a facet of myself that detaches from the 'normal' me. Hmm...self analysis is making me nervous...
21. I'd say be who you are on stage. If you have to force yourself to look like someone else, it will soon show on you. I tend to be a little eccentric. very subtle things but people see them and enjoy. More recently I have toned it down because of the type of band I am in now. But it is still an extension of ME If you are not naturally outgoing and are happier letting someone else do the moves, so be it. Not sure I would watch other people for 'moves' be comfortable mate, and the crowd will enjoy.
22. I wouldn't tamper with the neck. Said it before but, strap height. try setting your strap so when sitting down the bass is just resting on your leg (sitting straight) so when you stand there is no variation in your wrist etc from when sitting. As Scott Divine said, a bass hung really low may look 'cool', but you are looking at wrist and back problems, at least long term
23. I can't believe this hasn't bee snapped up yet! Used my Warwick Corvette standard last night and it just blew me away. The word 'growl' definitely describes it. Great bass. get it!
24. Naaaah!!!! Years and years of playing. Self-cofidence Being in control of your instrument.
25. sounds to me like they don't have a clue!
