Great stuff, many thanks! Already downloading and printing the Reading and Technique PDFs, gives me something to get stuck into at home.

Should be a standard 1/16 for a BBOT i think. I think some bridges require different sizes though. I just buy the massive sets, cheap enough and you've got everything covered.

Please help me before I kill another bassist
My stack has, on occasion sported a (big) sign saying; "I am not a beer stand. Nor am I something to lean against" Next pillock that puts a beer on my electrics gets me throwing a 3-bar fire into his bath whilst he is bathing to demonstrate the principle. (I have issues with people putting drinks on amps. Should carry a death sentence.)
I had a drummer who used to do that, until i started putting my pint on his snare and floor tom skins. -
Please help me before I kill another bassist

Thing is with those leads with the mute switch is that if the bass holder can't be arsed to unplug the lead from the amp first they're not gonna bother with a switch on the lead either. When we used to have a young support band for pub gigs i tried to educate the bass player - press the tuner footswitch before you unplug. He didn't and he used my gear exactly once. As i said in the last thread on this subject, ask for a deposit and drill the pack down routine into them. If they don't get it, refuse to pay a deposit or take the piss then simple - they bring their own amp. It's tiring when you work hard and have a pro rig only for every other bassist to dump their practice amps and plug straight into yours thinking they know it all. -
Take care to note that this member is Jakebass, NOT Jakesbass who is a highly esteemed member and professional bassist and teacher. It's easy to confuse the two, indeed I did briefly when I first joined and read the Vampyre thread.
Very good point! So remember: Beard and double bass = good. Emo with angry parents = bad.

Someone's stuck a bid on it! I bet it goes for more than the BIN, especially if the seller decides to post. -
So I spend all this time, effort and cash...
As a Bass Player who also does P.A. Hire and Engineering, I've lost count of the number of times I could have been legless, when fellow Bass Players have wanted to buy me Beer after a Gig, because I got 'their sound' front-of house. Even other Band Members, Audience members and even Management have asked me what I had done differently, because "the whole Band sounded better than last time." Until the General Music Community (and Joe Public) realises exactly what difference a decent Bass sound makes, you'll just have to get on with it.
In my last band most of the engineering was done by our guitarist who was a professional AV fella and an ex-bass player who loved Stevie Wonder songs. Suprisingly i never had a problem with getting a good FOH bass sound! It actually pains me to see bands sounding cr@p live when there's an engineer there, the last few bands i've seen at the only decent venue in my town have all sounded either incomprehensibly muddy or weak and bass-light. What's the point in paying somebody to engineer a gig if they have such a poor understanding of what makes a good live mix? -
The only way i'd ever do an overseas purchase with a new member is if i got the goods/money first. I have done this before with a guy who only joined to buy my bass and he was a top bloke, everything went smoothly and i had the money in my account before i sent the bass. I suppose another way is to get a "bagman" - another basschatter who can take the money and delivery of the bass - who can then distribute those to the relevant parties. If you wanna find out about the potential pitfalls of trading overseas through forums then do a search for "Jakebass Vampyre" on here or the Warwick forum. In fact the Warwick guys also had another conman who juiced a member out of a few k not so long ago.
Just found this on the bay of E http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Dean-custom-shop-5-s...=item27b33b0339 Interesting how they don't show the arm cut out in the close ups.
That bass is the DB95, active 5er with gold hardware. It retailed for £400 so the seller is possibly being a little optimistic with the price tag. It's also not a "custom shop", it's a Korean bass. Kinda think he's trying to mug someone into buying what they think is a USA custom instrument in that listing. One thing to note with these basses is the inlays which, although they look impressive from a couple of metres away, are quite sloppily done and look cheap close up.

22cm or 8 1/2 inches, i have big palms and short fingers though so not as useful for bass playing as you'd think! My keys player has the same sized hands but with really long ET fingers, he makes really long note stretches look easy which makes me a bit jealous! Pantherairsoft has it right though, it doesn't really matter.

Even though they say pickup only sellers often post items if you ask, especially if you arrange the courier. It's worked for me pretty much every time! -

-
Oh btw the DB91 retailed for £269 and the DB94 for £375
-
It's a Dean DB91 i reckon if it's passive, if it's active then i think it's a Dean DB94. I had the passive one, nice enough bass. Bought it for £90 and sold it for £45 and four packs of Elites!

Low tension flatwounds, cheap as possible!!!
lemmywinks replied to lemmywinks's topic in Accessories and Misc
Cheers guys, looks like TIs might be the best option. I have 40-100 rondwounds on there at the moment, the neck has been stable since day 1 but i don't usually use higher tension strings on any bass. Don't want to risk the neck on the SR especially as one had the truss issue. -

lemmywinks replied to lemmywinks's topic in Accessories and Misc
Yeah i'm a bit wary of putting higher tension strings on it because someone had a dodgy neck, not that i like power cables on any of my basses! That's why i thought a used set of TIs would be good. What are the Status ones like? -
As above, are there any reasonably priced, low tension flats? It's for a bass from a certain charity shop so under £20 would be good, also low as possible tension would be beneficial. So far i've only found the Fender flats and tapewounds which i'm a little dubious of, having found Fender strings a bit lacking. Are the Elites flats any good? I've used their rounds for years and always loved them. There seems to be loads of cheap roundwound alternatives but no flats, i suppose they last ages and i should just but some TIs but thought i'd ask first. Alternatively has anyone got some used ones they'd like to sell me?
It's funny even on my auctions I think 'Why are you bidding so early?'
Sometimes i just stick a bid down when i see it and get it for less than i expected to pay. If there's a few bids on an item some people hold off biddind - if there's quite a bit of interest you maybe less likely to get it cheap. That isn't always true as some bidders just play the numbers game and low ball every bass as soon as it is listed. Also all it takes is one other serious bidder and your bargain goes out the window. Still, there's quite a few times i have missed an item ending only to see it not get any bids, of course when it gets relisted people go mental over it! I missed a keyboard, case and stand recently which got no bids, the start was £9.99 and it was just down the road!
-
I wouldn't worry about it too much, it'll probably go for what it's worth in the end. I gave up looking for a bargain "Squire" bass as it turned out lots of people had the same idea as me and were deliberately searching for a mis-spelt bargain that nobody else was bidding on. Similarly i have never got a really cheap "Gallien Kreuger" amp!
Are you liking the EMG Selects?
Yeah definitely! It sounds great, i quite liked the sound of the original pup but this is much better - probably my favourite out of my limited experience of Precisions. Loads of thump but never loses focus, i tend to play passive basses with the tone almost rolled off and it's great in that situation, very balanced and not lacking in anything. Seeing as these are around £30 new i think they're a bit of a bargain. I'll have a set of J Selects spare soon so i may stick them in my Jazz bitsa Only had it through my little Hartke combo so far but will definitely be taking it to practice. It's definitely staying where it is now, seeing as i basically got it for free - i bought a job lot for bodies, necks, case and a Badass bridge and this was in it along with some other bits and pieces - it seems fitting that it goes in this bass.
-
Put the sticky-backed plastic over the pickguard on mine, i think it looks miles better with a black guard and pickup. Ignore the hastily applied and roughly cut markers btw, i wanted to know what it'd look like before either paying for a set or spending ages making my own up!

Who's gonna be the first to ask for the serial number?
No I better not, I've got too many projects on the go at the moment. Thanks for the very kind offer though. Steve.
