1.
I did email Warwick to ask if they did these and where I could get them, but I never heard back. Suppose I could've pursued it a bit more...
That's strange, they're usually really good at replying, last time i got an email from Hans Peter Wilfer. Here's the link anyway, 3 different guages: http://shop.warwick.de/product_info.php?in...Just-A-Nut.html Much cheaper than i remembered too so i take my above comment back, they're quite reasonably priced IMO.
2. My local SR (which still has a few guitars) has actually started putting the prices back up. The Strats are now £67 and the LP without binding is £70. So they are officially increasing in value, Apa was right - they're already collectors' pieces!
3.
Or not. I've got the original brass JaN on my Thumb and strung it with 100-45 slinkies recently - the 65 gauge D is a teeny bit too big for the slot and catches as I tune it. The height adjustment also isn't very useful because half a turn equates to quite a lot of height, and the individual brass saddles sometimes get stuck - I noticed my E doesn't move at the moment, not that it matters... I would agree with the above that a good nut cut to the right height is all you need. Also despite the nut being brass and the frets being brass, open strings don't sound like a zero fret, they still sound like they're stopped at a nut.
You can actually buy the different brass inserts to cope with guage changes. However - like anything new with Warwick written on it - not cheap.
4. Might be worth waiting while and making an offer. That's the sort of bass that hangs around in a shop for ages and eventually gets offloaded on the cheap, the staff will be sick of the sight of it! High quality instrument but not really popular since 1989. Oh, and knock £100 off for the pointy headstock. If it was white you could have knocked a further £100 off
5.
For me, one of the most beautiful uses of the bass to provide a solo theme is Weather Report’s ‘A Remark You Made’, a piece which is actually very easy for even a learner bass player to play.
I was just about to mention that as i was reading your post! I would add that, as with any solo, it's easy to play at first but actually a lot harder to get every little nuance. It's the little details which make it sound so beautiful i think. I'm gonna fire up Spotify and have a listen to it again now. Nothing else to add, er... i really don't like playing bass solos! In my last band my highlight of the night was "Sir Duke", the low point being when i had to do a solo.
6. I had the JANII on my old Corvette which was handy, however it suffered the usual problem of the plastic retainers snapping off. Doesn't hinder the bass in any way but was annoying, as were the sharp corners which needed rounding off. Currently have the original brass one on my Fortress, much better and each string is adjustable which is great. Dunno if i'd retro-fit one over a decent standard nut, but nice to have.
7. Looks like nice wood underneath, well done! Looks much nicer IMO
8.
I once knew a guitar player who drew line on his headstock to show the angle the tuners needed to be at to stay in tune. Guy was a genius, wish I'd thought of that....
Not really needed though... Just take an allen key to gigs, if the strings seem a little flat or sharp just move the bridge saddles back and forth to counter the pitch problem. Soon enough your bass will be perfectly in tune and you won't need to bother with those pesky tuning pegs at all This method also negates the use of frets which leaves one hand free for punching the air
9.
Surely the blend on the Tech 21 is more flexible?
MXR M80 has a Blend control too. Both the EQ and Distortion circuit are switchable, on the Sansamp it's just the Distortion AFAIK. Lots of people use both pedals, i'd say either would be a good bet. More down to which distortion sound you prefer as both are built like tanks with really useful features.
10. I love my MXR too, does the job of 3 pedals on my board - distortion, DI and boost. One of those bits of kit that i'd replace like-for-like in an insant if anything went wrong with it
11. Ah i actually think i remember them being discussed a while back. Want one!
12.
Oh and it has a long way to run before we find out if it is a bargain or not. ;0)
A bit OT but what's your Avatar bass? Never seen the Corvette shape with f-holes before, me likey!
13.
Looks like I'm Turbo un-cool, then. 4 of mine; Warwick Infinity SN4 Warwick Fortress MM5 Warwick Streamer LX6 Status Streamline
Nah not really, the Fortress and Infinity are still cool, the Streamline is also much more acceptable than the other Status basses. Well, until Mark King starts playing one anyway! If you feel that bad about it i'll take those 2 Warwicks off your hands, i have a really fashionable Sue Ryder to offer as trade!
14. A lot of bodies have sloppy neck pup routs, Squier just rout a big rectangle nowadays and i've seen USA Fenders that are even worse. Once the pickup is in it's not as noticeable i don't think, my old Jaco copy was like that.
15. Lovely, i'm a sucker for a natural Jazz, looks promising. Personally i wouldn't bother with the scratchplate, the wooden bell plate will be enough. No point spoiling that natural finish with an 'orrible piece of white plastic!
16. Oh forgot to add that i'll include a R/L to jack cable to hook your CD player or MP3 player/PC to it
17. Having a bit of a clearout so this is for sale. Kinda wanted to hang on to it as it's very useful but i need the space and would like to liberate some spending money. It's a few years old and has served me well. It's one of the A series Kickback style combos - a loud, punchy little amp with a handy MP3 input for practice. Official spiel here: http://www.samsontech.com/products/product...1&brandID=3 They're still around the £250 mark to buy new, that's what i originally paid a few years ago, but i'm selling this one off cheap as it has a couple of issues: The first is that on some notes at higher volumes there's noticeable distortion, mostly around the G, G# and A notes. I dunno if this is the driver or the cabinet itself causing this but it's definitely not the amp as i've tried it with a seperate cab. It still gets pretty loud before this happens so in it's current state it's a handy little combo. The second point is that it's got a few cosmetic issues. The tops of 2 knobs have come off (knobs and pots still totally fine, just don't have the silver plastic caps on). Also one of the EQ slider tabs has snapped off, again the slider still works, you just have to use a fingernail (or a plectrum, if that's how you choose to live your life ). The carpet is also a little scruffy in places, could be neatened up with a little trimming i think! All i want is £60, collected from the Blackpool area is massively preferable to using a courier which i'd rather not do. Any questions feel free to ask, also if you wanna come down and open it up to check the driver/amp,cab structure out then that's cool. Ta! Steve Edited for spelling
18. Well i appear to have put this in the wrong section, well done me. If a mod could please move it that would be just great, ta! EDIT: Cheers mods!
19. Having a clear out and this is surplus to requirements. It's a compact 1x10 cab made by a BCer. I bought it a while ago for home practice use and the occaisional quiet jam and it's done fine. I'm using my little EA cab for that now so it's not getting used. However, when it arrived it didn't work. I found out that the crossover (there's an adjustable tweeter btw) had become damaged and took it out, wiring the driver directly to a Speakon connector on a wooden backplate. A bit of a rush job but it's functional and very easy to replace. The original crossover and backplate will be included if anyone has the ability to fix it. So it's a little compact cab (think EBS 1x10 dimensions/looks - but a bit more homemade) which sounds decent for not much money. Although it's rated at 220w @ 4ohms i wouldn't compare it to a typical 200w+ cab, it craps out if you stick too much through it so don't expect a Barefaced Midget for £35! It does, however, produce adequate volume for playing along to CDs and acoustic guitars, electrics too if the volume isn't cranked up. That's what i used it for and it did fine, made a nice little partner to my Superfly. SOLD Cheers Derren! Cheers! Steve
20. Got these spare, they came from a project i planned but now haven't the time or inclination to finish. They have been on an unfinished body and neck just to get an idea of what it'd look like but it was never stringed up. The parts aren't new, but aren't "used" either. All in Gold! They're all cheap generic brands but seem to be decent quality. There's 4 Fender-style tuners (4 in line) and a string tree There's also an old Hohner neckplate in gold with screws (functional but well-used and a bit chewed, plenty of life left in em though). It's older than the rest of the hardware but is good quality and looks cool. It's got tape over it in the pics btw to so i don't lose the screws! The new prices for the items above amounts to £23.50, a gold neckplate costs around £5 so that would be £28.50 if you sourced them all new. Bearing that in mind, how about £15 posted (1st class Recorded Delivery)? EDIT: Knobs and Strap Buttons sold to Paul, cheers!
21.
I'm stoked, my white Ryder was delivered this morning. Now for the question. Does anyone happen to have a maple Ryder neck they would like to either sell me or swap for my rosewood one?
If you're ever up near Blackpool i'm game for swapsies!
22.
And no doubt Guitar Centre in the US will be jobbing them out for considerably less than $1000 this this time next year.
That would still make it an overpriced plank. Honestly, it might be the nicest sounding bass in the world (highly unlikely but possible) but looking at it i'm not seeing any work which even remotely justifies the price tag, even taking the brand name into account. It's actually quite a crude looking instrument, going off pictures anyway. My mate had one of the DC Junior guitars, paid around £500 for it new. Nice enough but beaten hands down by a PRS SE and a Washburn Idol in pretty much every department
23.
Do you get a free pair of slippers with every Status?
Yeah they come in a set with an Alan Partridge-style blazer and a tartan blanket to go over your knees on long car journeys.
24.
Cool people don't play Status basses and have never played Status basses, that's their problem. Even when Mark King was nearly cool in the '80s he didn't play Status basses, he switched to them afterwards! Until someone undeniably cool is strongly associated with a Status bass they'll always be expensive mid-life-crisis basses.
I really liked their Jazz-style one though, that was a really smart alternative to a Fender. I also quite like the Streamliner, which i guess is their only original design
