Wouldn't a Hartke A70 do all that?
I sold the Hartke a bit ago, it was pretty good for hooking an mp3 player up to but as i recall (may be wrong) it wasn't able to do silent practice. It's also a bit bulky to keep just for the line-in capability as i already have a mini-rig for amplified practice. I was looking at getting an Art Pre a while ago as i'd like a nice valve pre, so something like that with an mp3 in and headphone out would be ideal as it would kill two birds with one stone.

Hey all I've just joined a new band after a nice rest from gigging and it's the first time i've needed to practice properly since my daughter was born. At the moment i'm using a cheapo Zoom multiFX but i need some way of mixing my mp3 player so i can learn songs quickly without waking the little lady up and getting a bollocking from the missus. Basically something simple which lets me mix an instrument and a line-in that i can use with headphones. Would need to be smallish and relatively cheap - i'd like a Bass Buddy but can't justify the cost as i already have a small practice rig. Cheers!

+1 on the nylons if you're after an approximation of an upright. Defretting and fitting nylons won't make the bass itself sound more like a db, but it will be easier to make it sound like one if you get my meaning.

They all have sales, even the little guys. Just get on their mailing lists and you'll get offers and promos.

Over £90? Wow, they were about £45-£50 a couple of yeas ago. Might stick mine on there! Ace pedals though, pobably my favourite raw bass fuzz sound.
Because people have expendable income to waste on stuff that makes them feel good about their kit. I 25 years I've never felt the need to tell anyone the make of my cables - I bet the guys in the band of the guy who wins it will all know before the week is out that he has a Pete Cornish Silver Signature cable.
Painfully true. There's a lot of people out there who'll throw money at "boutique" cables. Makes you wonder when we'll see the first boutique plectrum selling for £50.

Another one from (not so) sunny Blackpool here, welcome to the forum Pete! Loving that Vester btw!

I thought Gaf just used transfers for block markers. In fact i thought Fender did too on maple boards. I have one Mighty Mite neck (a fretless modern P shape) and it's ace.
My 'dinky P' in swamp ash is almost comically lightweight and the neck doesn't dive at all. Might do with Fender type tuners, but it's fine with Schaller lightweight.
I had Schallers on mine too, plus the neck and fingerboard was solid Pau Ferro and it didn't dive. It was just something that was brought up a few times when i was researching Warmoths along with the old profile J necks.
-
My Warmoth was lovely, faultless quality and stunning to look at. As mentiones, if you want Jazz width necks you have to specify, my Jazz had a thicker neck than i expected (still a breeze to play) and it was a common complaint. All sorted now though as they offer J spec necks. Also the steel rods can add a bit of weight to the neck. I had a Walnut body so it didn't affect balance but is you spec light ash or something then it might be an issue. One thing is for sure - you get stunning quality parts at what i consider to be a good price. Not the cheapest option but the choice is amazing.
I musrt admit having recently swapped from lead to bass that my acoustic solid case is a pain on account of only being able to carry it via the handle and my P base is sticking out the top of my old gig bag but is so much easier to move around
I have a Tribal Planet semi-rigid gigbag for my acoustic which is really light with backpack style straps. Dead easy to carry and was pretty cheap too.

stupid stupid question about batteries
lemmywinks replied to christhammer666's topic in General Discussion
You could get a bypass switch fitted in case the battery dies or the electronics fail mid-gig, all my basses have these and they can be wired to a push/pull pot so no extra drilling. -
+1 for OBBM This could go on for a while! lol Si
There must be a few of these threads now! Although it's a bit overdone here (i'm sure half our keyboards have faded "O" "B" and "M" keys) they are excellent cables at great prices. Most of my cables are OBBM and i can't fault them, realistic postage prices very quick turnaround too.

HELL YEAH I JUST WROTE THE BEST SONG EVER!!!
lemmywinks replied to Gust0o's topic in General Discussion
So what's the etiquette then, from a legal perspective? Say if I liked one I'd come up with - what level of tweaking, reengineering or rewriting, won't see you hauled over the coals for infringing some copyright or other?
You should stick some cow bell in there. If it still sounds similar then utilise some more cow bell. If that doesn't work then you need a new cow bell. -
I have one in my P copy, i like it! Didn't expect much given the price tag but was pleasantly surprised, i'd like to try their J set at some point. I also like the Duncan designed J set but haven't tried their P.

Some of them had the all-in-one plastic guard, see here: http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=...+jazz+pickguard

Where can I get my Super fly amp repaired?
lemmywinks replied to The Dark Lord's topic in Repairs and Technical
£40 is a very good price for a single channel Superfly, they're very good for home use. Ashdown really don't seem to want to support this amp, not surprising given it's manufacturing defects and poor construction. They didn't reply to me when mine needed a repair either yet were very responsive when i enquired about it with a view to buying one. Seems like it's something they want to forget about. If you ignore a problem it just goes away right? -
Thank goodness for that. Trying to keep costs down as already shelled out £15 on solder kit and extra £20 on helping hand and some decent wire cutters.
Aye but think of all the money you'll save, a soldering kit pays for itself really quickly. No more paying for a pickup swap, lead repair etc.
-
You can usually pick those "3rd hand" things in cheapy DIY shops, i have one as you definitely need 3 hands for soldering! I never got the hang of the desolder pump and use braided wick instead. Are there any drawbacks to using that? Everybody seems to use the pumps.
Hard drive magents are very strong and pretty small. You can use 2 to remove those annoying red tabs in DVD cases if the shop forgets to take them off. That said, you would have to buy hard drives for this and each magnet would cost you £20 minimum....
Or just stick an ad on Freecycle for dead hard drives, i bet you could get a few from computer shops too.
I'm really amazed at how low the resale value of Warwick's are.....very very well built instruments! Though their shapes can be a bit.... phallic? Anyone know why their resale value is so low? As others have said....I think £500 could get you a higher end Warwick that the streamer you have mentioned!
Well the Streamer the OP was looking at was their cheaper model, hence all the missing features and Rockbass styling. They rightfully go for around £200 as they weren't that expensive new. Corvettes are an interesting one, the retail of the German Standard (now discontinued) was recently about £1k IIRC, whereas when i bought mine in 2002 the actual selling price was £600 for the Standard Active in Ash. Their used price of around £400 seems fair considering that. I guess there's just not that many people willing to pay the "correct" prices for the higher end Warwicks these days. I guess instead of selling them we should all just buy another while they're still cheap!
-
Streamer Standards like that go for around £200, don't pay more than that. They were the precursor to the Rockbass range, notice the similar shape (no contours), body wood, passive pup(s), front mounted jack, one piece bridge... Think of it as a Warwick neck on a Rockbass body. I had the single pickup version, nice necks but not one of the nicer low end Warwicks, my Corvette totally blew it away. Budget £400 and try to pick up a Fortress or Corvette. Keep an eye on eBay and you might get lucky with one of the higher end models too.
What's the history of this? Is it a Fender?
If it's what i think it is then it's from an eBay seller who used to make them, going off the neckplate. In fact there's a chance that this one might have been mine at some point as i bought one from new. If it is the one i sold then i put USA pickups in there and Dr. Dave added the pg. Not saying it is that one though.... If it is one of those eBay basses then it's a good player, at least mine was. Nice fretless basses with tons of mwah, if you want to get that Jaco tone then those basses were a good buy.
