2.
to be honest i wouldnt dream of taking all my expensive gear (not that i own much expensive gear) to some of the dives we play.i mean we played at a pub in millom cumbria where a lot of our gear got damaged and i ended up minus a front tooth because of the local roid boys acting like arseholes.
Haha Millom! I know a few people from around there (well Haverigg actually) and from what i hear the nightlife does seem to have gone down the roid and coke route. We used to play around Carnforth and Lancaster for a bit and had a similar experiences in a few pubs there, basically a few idiots take over the pub and the landlord doesn't complain because they spend half their wage in there.
 3.
I reckon my Squier sounds better through my BF BigOne/LMIII than my MIA P Deluxe does through a Behringer2X10/Hartke set up I sometimes use. So, in my experience, you get a better overall sound by moving a greater proportion of your 'spend' over to the amp and cab. So, I think your plan is a good one.
Yeah i already have a Schroeder/LMII rig which sounds great whatever i put through it - i used our guitarist's girlfriend's pink 3/4 PBass copy (complete with Hello Kitty stickers) as a backup once or twice and that still sounded great! I just really want a Promethean combo or a Midget, or both! I have no real bass GAS these days but amp GAS is terrible!
 4.
To cross-refer to another thread, I think all the postings on this one answer the question why we don't see more boutique gear at gigs.
I used to use a boutique bass (2k new) and my cheapo Aria at gigs, never really thought of it as weird that two basses at opposite ends of the price spectrum both got equal use. If anything the Aria got more playing hours because i just leave it lying around the house. You have to keep those expensive basses in flightcases! Tbh i've thought about shifting all the expensive gear and just using my 3 cheapo Jazzes exclusively, i can get pretty much everything i want out of them and i have serious Promethean/BF Midget GAS!
 5. I've gigged my Aria several times, it sounds the business! It was my backup bass in my covers band days but got plenty of outings, i really like it as an instrument, it has bags of character and tone. In fact i was playing it today through headphones and my cheapo Zoom pedal (daughter having a nap so i snuck a quick practice in), still sounded the nuts! Roll the neck pup off slightly and it's a killer. Cost me £45 off eBay.
 6.
When he gets a bit older, he's going to wish he got good at playing the sort of music girls his age like.
Aye, he's going to be gutted when he does his first proper gig and instead of a front row full of young nubile women it's just a load of middle aged men in cardigans shouting "do 'Lessons in Love'"
 7. Loads of people are happy with their rig and have had the same kit for years. The reason they seem rare is that they don't post new threads every other week updating everyone with news of their shiny new toys and telling us how much better it was than the last one they had! It's be pretty boring if there were loads of threads with the title "Still got the same amp, nothing new here" or "Looked at a Genz yesterday, didn't buy it". I am however eternally grateful that this site has a FS section with lots of cool new kit at knockdown prices, something that is largely due to the fickle desires of gear whores! If i ever feel like a different amp/cab this site is the first place i come to.
 8. Might be an idea to get a cheap tone shaping pedal if the amp is otherwise adequate. I have a cheap Zoom multi FX which i use at home and one of the settings gives a great RATM sound. I also like the Hartke Kickback and A series combos in terms of VFM
 9.
It should do the job if you don't max your volume knob.
Agreed, i really like the old Peavey gear. Don't think i've ever got a bad sound out of a Peavey rig, they always do the business. I would add that a single 2x10 (especially a budget one) is unlikely to cope with lots of power, as long as you're expectations of it are realistic. If you have a loud drummer and/or insufficient monitors then buy two!
 10. Peavey, Ashdown, Hartke etc. all go pretty cheap, around £100 or less sometimes. The Hartke 2.5XL and the Pro 2100 are worth keeping an eye out for if they're going for a good price, that's what i'd be after, particularly the Pro.
 11. One for the Tobias fanciers among us, nice early example in decent nick: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/EARLY-82-TOBIAS-...=item19c76bd8de If anyone has the money spare and would like to purchase it for me then that'd be sweet!
 12.
If it were mine I'd do this..... Horses for courses though eh.
Fair point, if the OP has the skills and tools (also time and inclination!) to do that to a Harley Benton that's probably the best option. Looks like a fir bit of work though. There's a nice looking Vintage acoustic with hard case for sale in the FS section for £90 though, so you have to wonder if it's worth it or not? After all, the end result would still be a low end instrument with hardly any resale value
 13. If it was mine i would strip it, get as much money back as possible and buy new. Unless you have the skills to repair it (and a workshop) then it's just not gonna be worth it.
 14.
I said it before but I find it weird that people have issues with this! My main squeeze is a pitchblack plus but I just as often use whatever plastic pocket tuner is lying around, or the one built in to an fx unit... never any problems. Haven't tried clip-ons. I wonder if the bass makes a big difference? Mine are really cheap, maybe that helps somehow... At the end of the day a tuner that can't handle E or B isn't a bass tuner.
Massive +1 I have a Korg DT10 and used to own a Sabine NexFX pedal tuner, both handled an E, D and B no problem. Even the Danelectro tuner i briefly had (emergency buy when my Sabine was nicked) was problem free for a low E. The only problems i've had are with cheapo clip-on tuners. FWIW i think the Korg DT10 beats the Boss pedal hands down. Not tried the Pitchblack but loads of folk on here use them every week with no problems. One last thng - with some tuners it takes a bit of time to get used to how sensitive they are. My old Sabine seemed a bit jumpy at first and left me a bit miffed as it took longer than expected to get in tune. After a bit of time with it however i got used to the way it worked and it was a breeze to use along with being very accurate. Maybe that's something that shouyld be factored in?
 15. "Luthier's special" He sure is!
 16. Why are there no drummers like that where i live?
 17.
Maybe - unfortunately I haven't seen any evidence of this. I exchanged a couple of emails with their technical support but the general tone from Ashdown was one of disinterest. The amp worked fine for about a year or so of light use and then after the first time I used it at an all-day rehearsal it developed the infamous Superfly whine and shortly after that developed a fault that means it won't power up about half the times I switch it on. I would have invoked the "sale of goods" but it was bought from Sound Control who had gone into liquidation by the time the faults developed. It was cheap and I've learnt my lesson and will be avoiding Ashdown gear in the future.
I got no reply when asking about the manufacturing faults on my Superfly. They were really responsive when i was asking questions about what cabs i could use with the 2x250w@4ohm configuration and whether it was safe to run a single cab, but weren't at all interested when the amp was cutting out on me and i had found out that whole batches were shipped faulty. Fortunately i got mine from Gear4Music and they were great, taking it back and repairing it each time it went kaputt. It's worked fine since then and gets used pretty much daily. It seems that Ashdown have great customer service as and when it suits them.
 18. I have also had dodgy DR strings, sounds like it's quite a common thing unfortunately. Sweet strings though, when they aren't faulty of course. I think you'll like Elixirs, had them on a bass for months and loved the sound from the day i put them on until the day i took them off. I only replaced them because they had got a bit hairy! Lovely for fretless too, like a smoothed out roundwound. I was fortunate to buy 3 barely used sets on the cheap but would happily pay full whack for them.
 19.
That one should be reported though. You can't have Fender Road Worn in the heading - that's seriously misleading.
Dunno, he might have dragged it behind his car for a few miles? However it does say "mojo by the bucket", so maybe he used a bucket? Also "matte black" quite obviously means "i've painted it badly myself using half a tin of left over Dulux"
 20. Also ask at local businesses for decent boxes. I reckon almost every business has an excess of cardboard boxes they throw away and would be only too happy to give you. As said previously, double box with lots of bubble wrap in the inner box and thick layers of offcut card in the outer box. Make sure there are arrows drawn on the box pointing upwards (so it dowsn't get dropped with the speaker facing down) and it should be ok. However if a courier really wants to throw a box around and damage it then there's not much that can be done, it's always a risk. Just make sure you take out insurance for the full amount (new price) as it's not worth skimping on that, trust me!
 21.
Make your cover band a bit more fun.... Learn songs that push you and the band, even if they don't always work on the dancefloor. If you keep doing it, you'll find songs you like to play but that actually do keep the dancefloor full. Punters will appreciate it, and you'll get lots of well paid work in a good niche cos your not just robotically playing Brown eyed girl and Neil Diamond night after night.... the gigs you get will get hipper and more fun. Blasting out "I am the resurrection" to a hopping dancefloor at a wedding is nothing boring at all! That's how we handle it anyways.
This. Make it fun. Are the other members feeling the same way? If you aren't playing at least 3 Stevie Wonder songs then learn some, now!
 22.
Oh, and surprisingly, roll back the tone control a bit too, that often gives you a thump to get through the band, along with the dropping one of the pickup volume advice.
This is true. I usually roll either the neck or bridge pickup off a tad and then adjust the tone to taste. Mainly getting to that stage where there's loads of fundamental but the treble has a little bit of bite.
 23. Still got mine and use it on the rare occaision i get out of the practice room nowadays. Wouldn't turn up to a gig without it tbh, i used to play some truly horrible wooden dancefloor-type stages which were a nightmare but all were sorted with the Gramma. Pretty goog going for a bit of wood, foam and carpet. I have used a stand in the past which sapped floor coupling, the Gramma doesn't do this to my ears, just eliminates non-musical noises (apart from the ones i play!)
