1. The kind of things I like to play sound better with that extra attack from a plectrum, but also I struggle to get any sort of consistency with my fingers. I know it's mainly down to lack of practise, and it's something I want to improve on, but I'm pretty certain I'll always prefer a plec!
2. I picked up an Electro Harmonix Small Clone at the back end of last year and it's lovely. Here's Patrick Hunter demo-ing one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HlDsL2lKb-g Mine was 2nd hand and set me back around £20 (might have even been less). Even used they're cracking value, and tough as a tank!
3. Everytime I hear someone say 'gold pickguard' I shudder a little, but this is a real looker! The re-shaped headstock looks great too, I bet that was a bit nerve racking!
4.
Whats the announcement? Can't watch youtube vids at work
TL;DR - They're not breaking up.
5. That's a beaut! If you're after something new and different but cheap, then I'd say this is worth a punt - especially if reviews are favorable! Let us know if you go for it!
6.
Dazed, I see you're over round Manchester.. I'm in W.Yorks, work at Cleckheaton, only 1 mile from M62 Jn.26 if you fancy a look at it.
Crikey, I grew up in Cleckheaton! Was there just a few days ago in fact. Didn't expect to see a mention of it here, haha. Bought my first bass there at Music Room, which I think moved to a much bigger premises a few years back - though I haven't been in the new shop.
7. Another EHX Small Clone user here. Not as much control as a TC Corona maybe, but I think it sounds wonderful. Can't help but get a big sh*t-eating grin when I use it!
8. A big BC welcome! That's horrible news about your Squier Jazz, but great that you still feel that attachment to it after all these years. I'm only over in Leeds so I'll keep an eye out on the off-chance that I spot it in a local music shop! Hopefully it hasn't left Yorkshire!
9. 2015 was the year of my first pedals. Toward the end of the year I picked up a Small Clone chorus pedal, and treated myself to a Nano Bass Big Muff for Christmas after borrowing it's bigger brother from a friend. I love both, but even though the Muff is a lot of fun it's the Small Clone which gives me a real poop-eating grin. I'm still looking for songs that use chorus, but I'm loving adding a little sparkle to my usual stuff!
10.
Having to take the neck off to adjust the truss rod is pretty annoying. That was a 70s P, thankfully it never really needed adjusting.
I had the same problem with my Dano '64, it was infuriating when the inevitable neck adjustments came. I didn't have the confidence to do it myself at the time!
11.
does the battery get warm when you plug it in?
Not that I've noticed. I've just tried again and left it plugged in for a while to find out if it heats up but thankfully not. I've a mains adapter on it's way, so fingers crossed that will work. Hopefully it will, and that any fixes will just be a case of sorting out potential dodgy soldering.
12.
Hi Rikki, thanks for the reply. Is the general discussion a good place to start?
Anywhere really, I'm just thinking that here in Introductions your new line might not get as much traction as you'd like. There's so much to these forums that I've still not even been in some of them haha! I'm sure you'll find a very receptive audience though!
13. If you're looking for something new, I can't recommend the Squier VM products highly enough. I just got myself a VM 70's Jazz around October and I love it. I can't walk past without picking it up, and the quality is amazing. If you're willing to go second hand you could get something pretty special for <£200 - there are some great Yamaha basses going for less than that and they're worth a punt, if you can try one first!
14. Ey up! Welcome to the forum! Always good to see another of the Yorkshire lot in here! It's pretty awesome that you've launched your own range, was it tough to get going? (For anyone struggling, I found the website: http://www.jowbass.com/en-gb ). Probably worth putting up a post in the main forums to get feedback.
15. Haha, no offence taken! I did try both directions in the end, just to make sure, but no luck either way. The fact that the LED isn't lighting up either makes me wonder if somehow I've used three dead batteries, unless that's indicating something more serious. I'll buy a new pack of batteries, and will get on Amazon for a 9v adaptor just in case - seems like a useful thing to have!
16. I recently bought myself an EHX Nano Bass Big Muff (from these hallowed forums) for Christmas, but as it got wrapped up I never got to test it. I finally got to plug it in last night, but don't seem to be able to get it to work. I can get a clean signal through it, but when I press the switch it goes dead. No sound at all, and the LED doesn't light up. I've tried three 9v batteries (including the one that was in it when it arrived) but no luck so far. Am I being stupid? Am I missing something vary obvious? My set-up is VM Jazz > pedal > amp, so no other pedals to complicate things. Confused / worried!
17.
Andy Fraser, Chris Squire, and of course Lemmy. [...] Once we lose all the players of the 60's-70's, who's left?
I see what you're saying, but as good as those guys are they didn't inspire me to play. I wasn't around in the 60s / 70s, and yet I still picked up a bass. When I first got into music it was popular rock music at the time (mostly Green Day and Oasis for me) that made me way to play an instrument, and Mike Dirnt of Green Day was the main influence on me drifting toward bass. I got really into 90's and 00's skate punk, and so count Mark Hoppus, Dan Andriano and Fat Mike among those who influenced my playing, as well as others like the Foo Fighters' Nate Mendel or Chris Wotsitguy from Muse. Now my influences are much broader. There are countless more 'modern' bassists to keep new players interested. It's just that our focus always goes back to those we grew up listening to.
18. Martin Dixon up here in Yorkshire (he's in Otley, near Leeds) is very highly recommended. I've not tried any of his work but he's really helpful, passionate and friendly. I think you can go and stay with him (B&B style) and make a bass together, which sound fascinating! http://m.wharfedaleobserver.co.uk/news/1324891.Otley_craftsman_whose_guitars_are_a_real_work_of_art/ (I don't have his website, sorry!)
19. I grew up with a lot of 90's skate punk but love classic punk rock. My favourites are a bit of a mix I think, some more for their attitude than their talent! Dan Andriano - Alkaline Trio Mike Dirnt - Green Day Fat Mike - NOFX Dee Dee Ramone - the Ramones Jerry Only - the Misfits Mike Alvarez - Descendents Matt Freeman - Rancid
20. Queens of the Stone Age - Everybody Knows that You're Insane Kiss - God Gave Rock n' Roll to you (II) The Smiths - How Soon is Now Guns n' Roses - You Could Be Mine The Cure - A Forest
21. This looks great, thanks for sharing! My new VM Jazz doesn't fit my old hard-case (even thought it housed my P-bass and Dano '64 perfectly), so I've been on the lookout for something to protect it!
22. I really like the look of SBL, and his free videos (on his site and YouTube) seem really helpful. But they all seem to assume some knowledge of scales, chord progressions, arpeggios, etc. Is that something I should know about before I sign up? Or something that SBL helps with? Often I put on a video about something that seems simple, and he drops terminology and names of chord progressions that means nothing to me, which can be a bit disheartening! Don't get me wrong - this is stuff I definitely want to learn. Just don't want to sign up just yet if I won't get the most from it.
23. This happens with me and always surprises me, so I'm glad I'm not the only one. Just last week I was picking out parts for a few songs (A Forest by The Cure springs to mind) and found it awkward the first evening. The next day after a sleep I nailed it. I've heard sleep is when your muscle memory is truly built, so maybe that's why!
24. Hello from Yorkshire! Always good to see another Northerner on here. My dog Poppi (a basset-cross) isn't quiet so keen when I play, so it's good to hear that Lola is a bit more interested!
